Honestly it's a safe bet and it's tasty as.... It's just a little overpriced for what it is.
Make sure you get the one in the bottle with the thick glass at the bottom.... there is like 3 different bottles available

If he's not a huge scorch drinker then the more $$$ = better will not really work. As they get older and more expensive the flavojr gets more intense.
If he likes chivas then stick to the speyside malts (basically anything with "glen" in the name) and you can't go wrong.
Birds is right about blue label as well. It's overpriced yes, but it's a great drink and he will definitely know it, where he might not know the others and that is a huge plus in this situation.
I'd suggest that or a Glenfiddich 18 as being the better recognisable options.
