Admin - please move to appropriate section if causing disruption but need some quick answers

    Hi Guys,

i am no expert when it comes to this and i have no idea what i am even saying tongue.gif

i am purely replicating what a reputable gearbox place in sydney has told me. Apparently the cluster shaft has sheared off the end and it needs replacing as per pics.

I have contacted Auto gallery Japan with great frustration because of my lack of japanese and resources i have available. But they do not have this part available off the shelf and would need to make it up and can not give me a esitmated timeframe as to when it could be made by. Hence my question of getting this made locally. A engineer that the gearbox place uses was approached and got back to me with a quote in excess of $2000. I personally found this to be a bit rich and would like some opinions to this or advice as to some possible engineers i can deal with.

Just a debrief - car makes 340awkw and shifted nice with this box from 1st to 4th. However coming down the straight going into fifth at EC would always crunch. Got gearbox fully serviced and replaced 5th gear syncro. Upon shifting into 5th for the first time - it was like half a crunch. On lap 6 - 7Krpm and a slighty quicker shift saw the end of 5th gear and reverse.

All input would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

Mate , just wanted to know if you ever got the auto gallery 690 box fixed ..Was looking into options other than just the OS or PPG option.

  2. I'll keep that in mind mate, cheers.

I'll see how I go tomorrow.

Try this mob too Paul..they would be able to machine and cut the internal splines no problem. As for cost to do it i couldn't tell you.

Also depending on the size step up in diameter you might be able to machine the existing hub out and just re spline it if there is enough meat left to do it.

  3. Do you know what size & spline count the large shaft is ?..i can't find the info on ppg's site .

I wonder what ppg would charge to make another centre drive to suit their shaft if you supplied the original nismo unit to them ?..it wouldnt hurt to ask if they would or could do it since your willing to drop a bunch of cash on their gear sets.

  4. This is the problem.

I don't want any downtime. If I buy a new coppermix and can't get it done then I'm rooted.

Time to keep calling around I think.

You don't need to buy a whole new coppermix ..you can buy the new centre boss for $275 & new clutch plates for $228 from RHD .

If someone can't machine a new splined drive with a cnc machine then they need shooting.

  5. Apparently it is. Something to do with the type of twin they are.

No recommendation. I really don't want to move away from it though. My one has been in the car for 9 years. Don't care if I have to buy a new one, but it works and drives awesome.

I would take the centre boss of the clutch apart and get the splined drive out of it & find a shop who will machine the identical part but with the spline size you require.

  6. I couldn't a agree more. There is a HUGE gap in the market. Not everyone wants sequentials but they have the power to warrant a bulldog box.

Let's see how this dog box is. Can't be that bloody hard!

What I am having troubles with is a clutch to accept the larger spline. I rung Jim berry and asked if he could modify one if I sent him a brand new coppermix. He wasn't sure. Took my number down and is going to get back to me.

    Suggestions?

Cant be that difficult to have your clutch plate modified to suit the larger spline shaft & reuse your nismo pressure plate.

Have you tried John at Western clutch at St Marys..he might be able to sort you out as well.

Did PPG recommend any particular clutch when using the large input ?

Maybe you can email them a picture of the centre boss of the hub & just say to mod the centre to accept the large spline .

  7. Just put an OS88 into the car …you know you want to , there only 14k landed from RHD.

At least its rated to 1500hp unlike the PPG.

Downside=cost , and who the fark wants to service the thing every 5000kms.

Why can't someone manufacture a damn box rated to 1200hp or so , that can drive like the stock box, no ridiculous service intervals, without needing a kidney donation to fund it. :/

  8. If you use the original Nissan 5sp, (FS5R30A) and get a ppg gear set, it will take a bit of abuse!

They're about $3200 for a gear set plus install and bearings etc. Lookup the ppg site, they have heaps of info on the stuff they sell.

No they are not $3200 for a ppg gear set..if they were everyone would have them.

A PPG gearbox will owe the the best part of 8-10k depending on what ratio's/billet mainshaft/forks etc you choose.
