  1. Scatching's comment about self expression not being constitutionally covered is important guys. You can't rip heli's on public roads, but within reason you can fully express yourself here. Even if you're bi-polar.

It might be worth noting that in Australia, we dont have a section in our constitution covering freedom of, or expression of free speach.

Therefore, truly, we can NOT self express ourselves in which ever way we decide fit, because we can not be offensive in our expression. There was a teenager arrested just recently for 'expressing an opinion' on a T-shirt. The shirt was highly offensive, but the text on the shirt was purely opinion based, but the offensive nature was what he was arrested for.

For those who are interested, the shirt said "Jesus is a C**t".

  2. I think, unless cops are in this forum for business, they should split work and pleasure....

On another forum I am a part of, I interct with a ighway patrol officer all the time, and unless he is on duty, there is never a problem, he even went for a drive in my GTR, no issues, no problems, and no stress.

He pointed out 'issues' that would normally attract attention, I had them rectified, but there was never a hint that he was going to use anything against me.

I also dont have the best of history with the law in regards to driving (from 9 yrs ago, not recent) but this has also never been an issue, and I am taken on my merits, not my mistakes.

2 clows in trucks that where seen next to each other doing 40+ over the limit, they where probably impounded for 2 reasons, getting stupid cowboy truckers off the road for an extended period of time, and to make an example.

BTW, I have no issues with Police, both on and off duty, nor do I drive in a manner that would generally attract attention, but if someone (note: Police officer) gives me shit for no reason, I will return the favour.

I have also been told that the moment your pulled over, the Attitude test starts, I see this as unfair, why 'test someone' for their attitude when your about to cost them 2 days pay for their mistake.

  3. Ohh, and there are 2 ground wires, the Brown and Black. They both HAVE to be connected to the same grounding wire to the ECU, and the BROWN wire must be closer to the ECU than the black wire.

Also, you CAN NOT just connect the black wire further up on the brown wire, and link the brown wire to a single point on the ECU, this can cause damage to the unit.

    B.

  4. The power wires 'TAP FROM' the ECU wires, but dont actually intercept them and re-channel through another wire like the AFM wires.

Qutie easily installed, you slice the protective plastic sheath, and connect the wire up.

For the AFM connection(s), you cut the wire, and then you have 1 wire that gets the signal, and another wire that sends the modified signal.

I have installed the SAFC II (very similar unit) into 180sx, and Toyota Soarer, and about to install it into my Skyline GTR when it's back from Vision, I can help you out if you have the actual proper ECU pin-outs for your car's ECU :D

  5. What worries me is that someone can search "reset xxx alarm system" and find this post, but wont find the manual for the alarm.

Non-hightech or not, providing information to over-ride a security system chills me, but that's my opinion.

I already know how to bypass a stack of alarms, but this is something I would be asking for contact details, and calling the person, asking for some way of confirming authenticity of the request before providing the info, I am just one of these super-paranoid people in regards to automotive security, especially considering imports are high-up on the theft list, and usually stripped for parts and wrecking within 8 hours of theft.

At the end of the day, you wont stop someone stealing it if they want it, but you can make it difficult for them to steal.

  6. Might I suggest taking this to PM???

I find it strange someone telling someone else how to reset an alarm system for a car over the internet, I would hate to know that someone willingly told someone else how to reset an alarm system that then got used to pinch my car (if this information could be twisted or used in the wrong way).

    Just my personal rant.

    Thanks.

  7. Any audio is NOT cheap, and selling is only a small price in the big scheme of becoming a name.

People that have an AWESOME name in the business have this because of their installation work, not because of the products or stock they are selling.

Take FHRX, quite possibly one of the best installation shops in Australia, he knows his products, knows the cars he is placing them into, knows the in's and out's of the audio, and how each sound type will react on what speakers, through what amps, being sent from what headunits and DSP's, etc.

I dont know these figures for sure, but I would estimate the majority of an audio seller/installer's profit would be from the installations and custom fabrication work performed, and they name comes from a mix of 3 things, the installation work being performed, the after-sales service (where most businesses fall over and run once you've paid) and the knowledge of the products being used in the system.

As others have said, if you have the capitol behind you to set up and perform PROFESSIONAL installations, you have a chance at making yourself some money, but expect hard long hours, working from 6am (being onsite at 6am), through to leaving customers at 9pm to go home and doing the paperwork and cashflow, paying the bills, etc.

Then you need the time for seeing suppliers, talking and making deals on product, etc.

Also, just because you can install a head unit, follow 'prefered cabling', and get amps, speakers and sub into a car doesn't mean it's professional, it's like detailing a car, you have to look at the finer more detailed points of the installation.

Take Marty's installation of how to install speakers into a Skyline door in this thread: http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/In...li-t164820.html

Look at the attention to detail, he hasn't just stuck a set of 4 x 5's into the door, used the same wire and stuck the cover back over and produced the car to the customer, he has used Dynamatting and sound deadening on BOTH SECTIONS of the door to limit vibration and hold the sound inside the car for the occupants to enjoy, he has also used defusers to stop the sound bouncing back into the speaker and giving a slightly echo'ed effect, he has tied the stock loom back do that it doesn't vibrate, and also so it can be re-used to go back to stock if selling up.

Marty also solders his connections for secure connection and good contact, he paints the wooden mounting spacers he created, you dont see the paint, but the paint protects the wood a bit, helps it become water resistant (resistant, not water proof), He even uses colour coded shrink wrap (small thing, but it's the small things that make the install).

Audio install is like like running a car, the selling of the gear is like filling with fuel, it seems to cost a lot, but when compared to servicing costs, rego, insurance, tires, and replacement of other parts, the fuel starts to look cheap (even at $1.70/litres these days).

With audio the purchase and re-sale of audio gear will net you maybe 5% of the price of the goods, but then you need to store, warrant, replace, ship, insure, etc and it will all add up.

I purchased a Yellow-top from FHRX, it had been in his shop for just under 4 months, the costs in that time where initial purchase for $300, delivery to shop (est. $40), storage, insurance on the shop for theft, fire, acts of god (or vandals), he had to pay rent on his premises, and the insurance and rent for the space where the battery sat would be $10 for 4 months (easily in Sydney), and then he sold it to me one day for $353. Given the figures I pulled from me rear end, he maybe made $10, but I used EFTPOS and American Express to pay, so there is a 2% surcharge charged to him, the paper he used to print the tax invoice, the ink to print the invoice, and the printer and laptop, so he would have lost about $5 on that item.

Think about it, selling is not where it's at, installing is, and getting a GOOD name for yourself is not an easy job, and 1 flapup will cost you everything.

  8. just a question how do u find the headunit has it lost memory at all when u turn ur car on. i had 1 of those dvd players and it was always loosing memory even with the constant power wire straight 2 the battery.

If this happens, you might have the wiring around the wrong way:

I.E Yellow is meant to be connected to Constant 12v+

Red is meant to be connected to 12v+ when Acc is turned on

Black is meant to be Constant Ground/Earth.

Some people have accidently switched the yellow and the red, and this doesn't effect the player when you test the on/off function, because the it's being fed 12 volts to the Acc to turn on, but doesn't have a constant 12v so it's off, but then when you turn the key to Acc, it feeds the constant 12v and thus power's up as normal.

Problem is, the constant 12v is what feeds power to the headunit to hold it's memory, without this, you loose memory every time you shut the car off.

  9. Sorry to hear :(

But why did you drive home when they didnt replace the tyres?

I would have asked for my money back, or demaned they did it on the spot before driving off home.

Guess it happened 4 years ago.. hmm

Because I was blinded by the fact I got the car I wanted after searching for 8 months, I was gobsmacked to be actually driving away in it, so I thought I could spare the extra few hundred for new rear tires.

If I had known the rest of the saga, I would have kept looking.

Guess that's the other thing, if you find the car you want, get SOMEONE ELSE to look it over, because you might be blinded in the fact you want the car and will overlook 'stuff'.

  10. I thought the Skylines had a 60 or 65 litre tank????

I get 300 - 350/tank, and I have never let the needle go under 1/3rd, I usually put 30-ish leters in the tank. (so that's 30 litres for 350kms (remember I dont drive till empty).

EDITL: my super-leaned out Soarer was getting anything up to 900kms (estimate) from a tank on the highway, cruise control from Sydney to Brisbane and back with an 80 litre tank.

My PB was Filling up at Southport on the Gold Coast, and getting back into Chatswood Sydney with the 'less than 10' warning on the dash, and getting the 'under 5 litres' warning the next morning heading to a petrol station.

This was leaned off with the help of the SAFC II computer, got 846kms on that tank from a 1.86 tonne luxo barge.

  11. For others, also check the size of the grounding cable on the Battery, I did a complete install in my R32 GTR, and the ground on that is slightly smaller than an 8 guage wire, which is completely inadequite qwith a 4guage power feed for the Amps alone, let along the rest of the car's electronics.

My sugestion would be on cars suffering from engine noise, get a custom earth kit from somewhere like FHRX Studios, and make sure all your grounding points are adequite.

  12. I had a bad experience with Envy Imports on the Northern Beachers of Sydney.

NOTE: This may not be reflective of their usual cars or items, but this was the case for my single purchase.

I puchased a Nissan 180sx from the dealership that was listing cars on behalf of Envy Imports, it was a nice Blue CA powered machine, seemed alright, had lowish but realistic looking kms, a couple of small cracks, no boot rust, and engine bay was clean.

Car came with New front tires (although I later saw "NOT FOR ROAD USE, FOR TESTING ONLY" stamped on the tires) and the rears where almost through to the belts (but the rear tires had the same batch number for the tires as the fronts, so they where from the same batch, and chances are they where installed at the same time, so car DEFINATELY had a thrashing.

Anyway, purchased car, asked for tires to be replaced, road worthy, etc as it had nevre been registered prior (this was a Sunday).

Picked up the car the very next Wednesday, same tires all around still on the car, but was complied and registered.

Drove it home and was pulled over by an interested cop, he found the tires, but he was nice enough to give me a warning when I showed him the receipt of car purchase, and the fact I had only just picked it up and was disputing the lack of tires on it.

a few weeks later, I had put money away for timing belt (it was coming up to that time) and put it into the workshop.

Get a call from the workshop telling me to come and have a look at the car, I get there and there is a rust hole in the lower door sill on the passenger side, looked small enough, about the size of a mobile phone.

Anyway, rego was coming up (only had 3 months rego) so I took it back to Envy to get checked for the safety certificate, and was knocked back on the rust hole.

I took it to my panel beater to get the rust cut out, and found the rust was actually about 1 foot long, and was a monster job.

Got the rust cut out, and took it back to Envy, and it was passed.

Later, when replacing the A/C compressor due to bearing failure, I found a crack in the suspension tower about 6cm long, and right through to daylight on the other side, at this point, I sold the car 'as is, needs TLC'.

This particular car was rubbish, had been thrashed, was rusted right through, and was a general POS, the only thing good about it was the drive-line.

NOTE AGAIN: This might not be reflective of their general cars, but it was in the case of mine, I am not bagging Envy Imports, I have seen some quality come from their shop, but this was back about 4 yrs ago now, and the quality of this particular car was terrible.

  13. I would personally wait for your trusted installer to come back (put a German Sheppard next to the car and Sniper on the roof across the road from it until you get the system installed).

I can do it, but you dont know who I am, you dont know my quality or attension to detail, and you dont know if I am dodgey enough to try and make a back door entry for later...

Get it done by your trusted guy :D
