We ran this until earlier this year as well. Changed to RBF600 after cooking the Nulon at the track, then changed to RBF660 when we needed new fluid. Haven't had issues with either of the Motuls to date.

Interesting that you cooked the Nulon. My car is a 200sx, possibly a bit lighter?

I don't think you would continuously brake as often in a tarmac rally compared to circuit racing either which is why I might get away with it. There's often long stretches of road so things get a chance to cool down a bit

Hey guys who uses redline trans oil and what's the difference between the syn trans Castrol

I use Redline MT90 because its an actual GL-4 spec lube instead of Castrol and most other brands which are GL-5.

The Nissan boxes are supposed to use a GL-4 although most people use GL-5, which apparently isn't good for the brass synchro gears.

I'll be there, but it turns out that the spark plug problem that caused the ecu to miss count trigger teeth and fire 30 deg out caused a fair bit on damage.  The machine shop found a 9 thou bow in the bore, so I pulled all the rings off the pistons to check them, once the rings came off the ring lands fell out.  So i'm going oversized ross pistons, hopefully i'll have everything back this week to put it back together.

Awesome to hear you'll be there mate, I will be there for tour class too. Fingers crossed for no rain!

    How are the repairs going?

V70A used to be our control tyre, I used to run the mediums and found them the best of the mid priced tyres.

of course then the hankooks came along at mid price and blew away even the most expensive ones which turned the market upside down for a while.  I haven't priced them lately but per Richard's post, if they have got expensive that may make v70a a good choice again.

One surprising thing about the v70a, they like really high pressures. Like 40-45 hot high.

Thanks very much for the feedback Duncan and recommendation about the higher pressure.

I originally wanted the Hankooks but could only find them for $1800/set, so the Kumhos seemed like excellent value.

Have you ever used them in damp conditions? The event I am using them in (Snowy River Sprint, Lakes Entrance VIC) is sometimes damp.

    Cheers.

  5. I just picked up a set of 245/40r17 Kumho V70A in the K60 (medium) compound.

I'll be trying them out at a tarmac rally next month. I think this tyre was more popular a few years ago. Although it's been manufactured quite recently (my set have a July 2016 manufacture date) it seems like they aren't as popular as the Toyos, Hankooks and Advans etc.

From what I can see they should be a good medium budget tyre, my set cost $1100 all up, but the other brands were more like $1600 - $1800 a set.

  6. Track day maintenance schedule

    Hello all!

This has always been an interesting topic for me, but not one I can find a lot of info on.

It would be great to get an idea of what kind of maintenance you guys do you on your cars each track day/race event.

I'm not sure if what I am doing is enough, or overkill, or if i'm missing something critical which is important.

I do mostly tarmac rally (up to 150km per day competitive) and some hill climbs/drifting/fun track days.

To try and keep consistency across info i'll use sub headings:

    Frequency:

    Work:

Frequency: Small service every event (events are either 1 or 2 days long) more major checks every 3-6 months or few events if I'm driving regularly

Work: Small service: Engine oil and filter, wheels off the car and quick check for leaks/loose bolts/rubber boots, top up fluids if required

Major service: Gearbox oil, brake/clutch fluid, thorough check of all bolts/inspection of parts for wear, pull out brake pads to check rotors/calipers etc

Yearly (if not already done within 12 months): Air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, power steering fluid, coolant and diff oil (standard lsd)

Should I be doing things more or less often? What is your maintenance schedule like?

    Cheers!

  7. Hey mate,

    In my S14 I have an RB25 bellhousing, cut/shut with SR20 front, on a Z32 gearbox. Boom!

The Z32 shifter lines up much better, at best you will need to clearance the shifter hole a few mm.

The RB25 box requires a ~70mm half circle to be cut out of the front of the shifter hole, then you need a big dogleg shifter and it's not good.

Feel free to PM me for more info.

  8. Hi Guys,

I am planning to upgrade the diff in my car (S14 200sx).

From talking to mates and reading online I have settled on a Nismo 1.5way LSD. I use the car mostly for tarmac rally, hillclimbs and the occasional drift event.

I'm looking for advice on the difference between the GT and GT Pro diff models and if it's worth jumping to the next model. My understanding is the Pro model has an adjustable lockup bolt with 3 different setting. The standard GT version does not have this same type of adjustment.

The difference in price is $223 (both prices are without shipping).

    GT $1,111 http://www.rhdjapan.com/nismo-gt-lsd-1-5-2-way-rs015c.html

    GT Pro $1,334 http://www.rhdjapan.com/nismo-gt-lsd-pro-1-5-2-way-w-lsd-oil-rss15d5.html

So, my first question is as above, is it worth the extra money? How often would I really need to change the lockup setting?

Secondly, what is the best run in procedure for a new diff? I've read a lot of different ideas, a lot of people seem to suggest the following:

    - 30min of 1st gear slow figure 8 after install

    - 1000km of easy driving with left and right turns, preferably under 80km/h

Can anyone shed any light on the above? I don't drive my car on the street all that much, mostly to/from events or a weekend drive, but I don't want to damage the new diff by not running it in properly.

    Any help/opinions would be great.

    Cheers.

  9. I'll write up a proper review this weekend, but initial thoughts on Hankook RS-3 (Z222). My size is 245/40r17 all round (255 were out of stock).

Tyre is pretty hard - not nearly as soft as RSR etc (200 treadwear but feel harder than my 320 treadwear Michelin PS3)

However, very consistent grip. Very good grip too, as good or better than RS-R and way more dry grip than my Michelin, they handle the heat way better and stay consistent.

On a 37km Tarmac Rally stage they only started to get noisy in the last 3km, and I probably could have corrected this with less pressure.

I was running them at 37-38psi hot, sounds like a lot but it seemed to be where they were happiest.

Easily the most consistent tyre I've run, excellent stable grip. Would recommend for long drives like rally or lot of track laps on a hot day.
