Newbie question... can you just buy a car alarm and have it installed yourself?

been reading a few of these threads, and its scary how many cars get stolen under their owners' noses... not the fault of the owners of course. Just wanted to know... would a steering wheel lock be of any help? i'm tempted to spend some money (small amount) to get a steering wheel lock that I can put on my car overnight... at least I can use it to beat the crim if I come across one.

Thanks for the replies guys, was actually hoping not to spend more than $8-$9k on a car, and would consider a R32 as well. Like i mentioned it would be a daily drive to work. As long as it runs well, looks good I'm pretty much satisfied.

Looking to get an automatic skyline, preferably a R33 or R34... turbo or non turbo doesnt matter as it would be a daily drive for work.
