  1. Joel, the piston slap you refer to earlier in the CA 18 is more likely the top ring land of the piston touching the bore. As a general rule, piston noise when the engine is cold is as you said, the skirt making a little noise just when cold, wich should go after warm up, unless the piston to bore cleaance is massive, ie worn out... piston noise when warm will generally be the top ring land touching, wich can be made worse if the piston to bore cleaance is opened out a little (due to more rock). This can occur when the top ring land is not machined small enough comparative to the skirt size. Its very interesting to look at different piston manufacturers differing designs in this area. there is a general rule of thumb amount smaller this area should be, .008" - .009" per inch of bore. If the top ring land is not this amount smaller, it will become too big as the piston crown begins to heat up and contact the bore, this produces no noise when cold and then begins to make noise as the engine warms up.... if the engine is pulled down slight scuff marks will be seen on the top ring land.Ill bet the pistons in the CA 18 were wiseco, they tend to run fairly large top ring land diameters, ie small difference in skirt to ring land size. So if the clearance was opened up a little on set up, it could put it right on the border of touching... Hope all that makes sense and is of some help...
  2. Just wondering if any of you guys can tell me what are considersed good flow figuers from the intake and exhaust out of a ported RB 26 cyl head.
  3. SK are there any particular brand extractors that do meet your bang for ya buck scrutiny? looking at upgrading turbos, manifolds, etc. soon, and am not after absolute power at any expense just wise upgrades
  4. yeah this is right, dont know why but they made them over sized, would like to know the theory behind this, seeing as the part that screws into the block is standard size.....
  5. cant help ya wth your first 2 questions, but as far as piston and rod brands go, with pistons you cant go too wrong with any of the "known" brands; JE, Arias, CP, ACL (Ross, re-branded), etc, i've had experience with all these and all have proved good, personally i dont like wiseco, i think their design is not as good as the others, but thats my opinion. As far as rods go Argo are good, Crower do a really nice rod, and well priced, Carrillo also do awesome gear. Probabley comes dowm to how deep your pockest are. But all of these, i've had experience with, and should take good power
  6. The 26 uses a solid lifter set up. The bucket that sits under the cam and on top of the valve is nothing more than a lifter ( ie, the cam lobe turns and pushes on the bucket, witch in turn opens the valve). Valve clearance (lash), is then adjusted with a small shim that sits on top of the valve and under the bucket. Correct valve clearance is achieved by altering the thickness of the shim. Hydraulic lifters, use oil pressure to adjust lash. In the RB engines the HLA (hydraulic lash adjuster), is the bucket. The bucket has a small HLA mechanism inside it, this enables the bucket through pressure oil feed to sit between the cam and the valve and take up all the lash. Resulting in quieter running, as there is no clearance to take up each revolution of the cam. Hope that makes sense, sort of assumed you know roughly what the inside of an RB head looks like
  7. Im after peoples opinions on what turbo set up i should run. Ive got an r32 gtr, im doing the engine at the moment, its 3ltr, forged pistons, h-beam rods, ported head, 280/ 288 10.7mm/ 11mm hks cams. Im after a good driveable car. Its a street car, but really a weekend warrior; drags, track work, hill climbs etc. What turbos should i run? im not so concerned with overall power output, more just getting a good compromise of; good power, and huge torque without too much lag. really want to stay low mount aswell... thanks for any info
  8. how close they getting to touching? you reckon there is room for more dish?? Cheers for the info
  9. Wondering if someone can help. I wanna get a set of 19 x 10's for my r32gtr,but want the rims to have the deepest dish possible, ie low offset number??? What offset should i get. Dont mind having to roll the guards, or if it scrapes a little.
  10. I've had a fair amount to do with fitting numerous brands of forged pistons, and seen how they've performed. All the name brands are much of a muchness, in terms of finish etc. The arias are probabley the best designed, in terms of their ring land design. ACL have recently released a range, they are actually Ross pistons just re-branded, they are real good value for money at under $1000, and a fair amount lighter than the Arias. Just my two cents worth.
  11. could you please email pix of the os triple plate, and the volk 18x10"s to [email protected]
