im having a weird no start issue with my s1 rb25det. i confirmed fuel, spark, new cas, battery is good. when i crank it over it cranks and when normally it would fire up it instead my dash lights go dim and theres this weird winding noise. i kept trying and thought i flooded my engine, so i pulled out the plugs, some fuel but not flooded. i blew air into the cyl and cleaned off the plugs just in case. same thing happens. it was literally just starting before, all i did was adjust the CAS on the last fire up to correct the timing. its almost like the battery is bad, but its not holds 12v even after attempting to crank a half dozen times. im pretty stumped... the winding noise is something i never heard or seen before. opinions would be greatly appriciated!

so i played with the injector settings in FC-edit (im pretty sure they are right now), fully charged the battery, made sure the cylinders werent flooded and re-aligned the CAS and still the same results. getting really irritating.

so i decide to try to check the CAS per FSM but im a little confused. im going by this:

cas.jpg

im trying to follow it but its a little confusing to me. i can hear the injectors going off when i spin the shaft... when i check the voltage to #2 i get battery voltage, 3 and 4 depending on the position of the shaft its 5v or lower. nothing at 1.

is my CAS ok?

im just so fustrated with my car, it was literally just running and now it wont even start.

worked on the car last night, basically started over as if i never checked anything. also put the battery on a battery charger prior to all this to eliminate that and make sure it was fully charged.

checked fuel pressure, and injectors. tried with lowering and also raising fuel pressure

confirmed spark

double checked coil and battery grounds, also added an extra ground from the intake manifold to the chasiss

double checked and re-tightend all intake manifold bolts and hoses and anything that can cause a vacuum leak

double checked all i/c piping and couplers

tried with my power fc datalogit base map, my orginal tuned map from last year, and a new map for this year compensating for my new injectors

tried re-aligning the CAS several times

tried with maf/afm plugged in and unplugged

checked and re-gapped (0.8mm) spark plugs

some flooding after trying all those things so i pulled all the plugs and left them off over night. have a new set of plugs (NGK V-Power BKR5E-11) ready to go in today after work, also going to spray some air into the cylinders to make sure theres no flooding.

and basically thats where im at...

so i think i figured out whats wrong with my car... when working on it, i noticed a small rip in my timing belt. there must have either been some debris in the timing cover or i accidently grazed it or something while working on my engine. i immidately put the crank to TDC, and the cam gears were off by 4 teeth. i put a new belt on and re-timed it. still wouldnt start. would idling less than 2 min, and doing cranks be enough to bend valves? im really worried i bent my valves...

Does your exhaust cam still have the locating pin for the CAS on it still or has it been snapped off?? If it has been snapped off youll have to lign up the CAS visually where you can see the marks on the end of the cam...just a suggestion, seems to catch a few people out when they pull out the CAS..

can some one post up some good pics of the exhaust camshaft where the CAS goes and also a pic of the inside of their CAS? the key on my camshaft broke off and i need to be 100% sure on how to put it on... im suspecting something with the CAS because it was the only thing i actually touched before i got this no start condition...

I can get you a pic tonight bud, But grab a torch and take a look at the end of the cam where the keyway used to be, It most probably wouldnt have snapped off clean, so you should be able to see the raised/rippled half moon shaped surface that it has snapped off.

Once you work out which side of the circle the keyway was on, mark either side of the hole the CAS sits in, (so when you go yo put the CAS you can tell where it is meant to sit)

Then grab the CAS and mark the side of it where the keyway is meant to sit.

Line up the marks, then slide into place...

Hope you can understand that, If not ill get pics tonight and demo it for you..

    • Yes I can see how that would put you off HFM, especially with the price of good quality brake fluid. From what I understand it as you say the BM50 is the standard BMC for a R32 GTR, I must admit I would like to go far a Genuine Nissan BM57, but lack of cash prevents that at present. With the price being so close between the genuine BM50 and BM57 a BM57 New it seems a better choice as you gain that 1/16 bore size with the BM57, I would be interested in how much difference you feel with the BM57 fitted. I am going to take SteveL's advice in the short term and see how much actually comes out of that proportioning valve vent and save up for the Genuine Nissan part. Thanks for clarifying the HFM failure
    • Thanks mate. I just got the post inspection 1/2 done from state roads when the starter motor packed up, either that or the car alarm system is having trouble.  OEM part number 23300-AA112.
    • Hi, I though I was coming to an end in finding a replacement starter motor for a rb25de neo. I came across a starter motor from Taarks and a message below stating: Direct fit. 11 Tooth count. All below part numbers have been superseded to 11 teeth. Can some body shed some light on going from 8 teeth to 11 teeth apart from 36-month / 25,000 km warranty for passenger vehicles to 12 Month Warranty. Compatible with the following Nissan part numbers: 23300-20P00 23300-20P01 23300-20P05 23300-20P10 23300-20P11 23300-AA111 23300-AA112 23300-AA300 23300-08U10 23300-08U11 23300-08U15
    • Low battery? Maybe check capacity? I know first-hand, on BMWs if your battery drops below 80% capacity, it starts causing strange issues.
    • 8.5 +37 = should fit rear, but I think it'll hit on front. What you want is low 30s/high 20's front, mid 30's rear. That 17" screenshot you posted looks good, I'd run it on my R32 (but that's long dead now). For tyre sizes, my rule of thumb is: 8': 235, 9": 255. But that's just my opinion. Nismo sizes: 18x8.5+35/18x9.5+38 is a good starting point.
