Good day, i just registered on this forum but have been browsing for some time until i finally decided to get myself a skyline (its been a boyhood dream). And since i didn't have enough money for the r34 GTR, i was thinking of getting a GT-T. I was hoping if you old veterans could help me out with maybe a good price for a GT-T coupe. Also, is there anything i should be aware when checking out a car?

I'm 22 years old on the last few months of my p-plate and when i checked just car insurance, the premium was a shocking $2,7k a year (At a 450 excess of course). Are there other places get a quote from? Most insurance sites don't have the Skyline range under nissan so, i'm a bit lost in this department. Alright, sorry for the long rant. Thanks in advance!

Hey Davo,

I'm no expert since I'm only a 1 year owner, but my advice about the insurance would be... if you're on Ps and you're getting a skyline, just go the JustCar route, they were the only ones less than $2000 for me, although my excess is up at like... $1500 I think. There's the third party option but I feel more secure having comprehensive

Also, I wouldn't rush into the purchase, I looked at about 30 cars over 8 months before I found a skyline I was truly happy with, and don't regret being patient for one second. I was like you too, not enough cash for the R34GTR that I wanted originally (I mean who doesn't really want that one ) so I settled on a very nice black 33 GTS-T, and am really happy with the purchase. The 34 interiors look much more modern IMO than the 33, and you can get up to 1998 or 99(?) with the 34 so yeah still pretty modern.

They're awesome cars, I have to say. One day I'll have a GTR... one day :D

+1 ^^ Dont rush it, otherwise you'll buy something and see what you REALLY wanted the week after. Do some searching on here, there is plenty of "what to look for" topics.

R34s are f**kin nice, so be patient and find Mrs Right.

Didnt the R34s go until 2002 ?

JustCar is best in any case, especially for younger drivers and ESPECIALLY for imports.

It will always be costly until you're 25 then it still hurts, from 25 Shannon's is another option, but I dont know how much better they are.

With insurance, its always a good idea to have full cover if you're making repayments on it, if its all yours, then 3rd Party + Fire + Theft should do.

Welcome to the site :D

First of all thank you. So far i've only seen 98 and 99 GT-Ts, Anyways, i've sort of got my eyes set on the coupe with the spoiler similar to the GTR. So my choices are pretty limited. As for insurance I guess i'll go with Just Car.

welcome to the forums as a member,

as you should now by now insurance is going to kick your arse till your 25.

altho im set quite nicely with full comp+glass but ive seen that just car is the only company that will actually give you a chance at covering your car at a reasonable price

also as above take your time and when you find the one you'll know straight away so to speak.

so good luck with insurance and happy hunting or the

GT-T

GT-T's only go until 2000 im pretty sure, GTR's went until 2004. You should find the car that has everything you want, but then again modding is one of the funnest parts of owning a Skyline. When i bought mine it just had the stock spoiler, but ive since put the GTR spoiler on it and love it even more for that.

Im with justcar, i pay 523 or something a year for fire + theft. Insurance companies are all going to rape you for having a high performance car, but atleast JustCar give you a chance.

+1 for getting a 34 mate, sexiest car ever =D Also going to own a R34 GTR V-Spec pretty soon, all you buyers stay away from my dream car =P

I've always dreamed of owning a skyline but i come from a tiny island called Singapore where cars are as expensive as hell. So when i came here, i was like a child let loose in a candy store. About modding, that will come later of course with some guidance from all you modding gurus but right now i need to get the car first! I went to have a look at a GT-T recently and when the seller was reversing the car out from the drive way, there was some churning noises that seemed to come from the wheel, he just said that it was normal and it was the tyre rubbing against the mud guard. Is that normal and does that damage the car? Also, for you guys who own single turbo coupes, how much is the road tax per 6 months or per year? Once again, thanks for all the help and advice guys.

Lol not normal, sounds like the car has either been lowered too much or has rims that are too big, the guards need to be rolled.

Wouldnt say it damages the car, but its definitely not normal, and may wear out the tyre quicker? not sure on that though...

Hey

I own an R34 GT-T

think rego was $500/$600 for a year?!

Like the rest of the guys are saying, just car is probably the best for insurance, but yeah it does cost an arm and a leg :)

Take the buy slow, you dont want to rush it and then find out theres tonnes of problems!!!

autoworx is good

Good luck

I have checked out autoworx and they have a nice black GT-T for sale but, the price is a bit too steep for my liking. I know 2nd Hand car dealers have to charge a premium to make some sort of profit but right now i can't afford that premium. Trying to go for private sales.

2 Hanaldo:

What does it mean the guard has to be rolled? How much should that cost?

Rolling the fenders, usually for aesthetics but sometimes done so you can fit those Hektik 40" spinners in there....those are sick mate.

Rolling is rolled inwards to increase the wheel well, flaring is pretty self explanatory, outwards and for aesthetical value, common among drifters.

As for cost, no idea, I've seen people flare guards in their own garage and it doenst take long at all.

Yeah, Autoworx is good, IF they ever get back to you. I went there looking at a blue R33 GTS which had just arrived and was awaiting compliance. Left the guy my business car and mobile number contact details etc, he said it was being complianced the following week and he'd get in contact with me as soon as he had it back so I could take it for a test drive. Never happened, never heard from him, couldn't reach him after that. The car would have needed a respray as it was as the paint in the inside of the guards was botch job at best and could see the original (white) colour inside the lip of the guards. The paint for the skirts was only ever-so-slightly missmatched with the body but only if you were looking for it. Car was a bargain and guy reckons it was putting out about 280rwhp.

But, never heard from him. I'm not the only person who this has happened to from these guys either, but I shall not name names.

Glad I went elsewhere because my R32 GTR is an absolute bloody dream.

As for insurance, it's an import, it's going to cost an arm and a leg unfortunately. Me, I'm 28 and have been driving for 12 years, have only lost 2 points in all that time and have had only 1 accident where it was my fault(legally my fault, the chick I rear ended did not have any working brake lights, gg) and 2 where it was not. However full comprehensive is still $1500 a year for me and excess is a bit shy of that also, even with a fairly good record.

As people have said, take your time. With the market the way it is at the moment there are literally boatloads of bargains out there at the moment. Have a friend who just picked up a showroom condition, inside and out, R32 GTS-T. Unopened and unmodded, had only just arrived in Australia and bought for $12k. Good luck with it all dude :P If you spot a bargain and it looks too good to be true, don't hesitate at all to get it looked over by RAC etc. If the seller is honerable they will let you do it aswel, beware the dodgy guy's who hesitate with everything or don't seem too cluey themselves. DO YOUR RESEARCH and know what you are talking about :)

Welcome to the Forums David.

for guard rolling, my mates place rolls guards for $50 per corner. top quality work no f*king around.

R34, I told the guy that bought my R34 to go with HBF Insurance and talk to one of my friends, and his only paying $1200 under his name and his only 20 I think. Decent price for unlimited mods.

Yeah autoworx prices are steep originally and then he brings them down when he realises barely anyone's buying cars!!!

I never had a huge issue with communication but having said that, that's not where i bought my car from.

And like some of the guys have said, RAC checks are usually a good go.

Thanks! Anyways, for the $1200 insurance, how much excess does he have to pay? I tried the online quote with just car and the cheapest i got was $1600, even with the $1550 excess payment option. About the guard rolling, i have to see if i get that particular car but if i do, i'd definitely get his number from you.

Ah, I should also mention that the reason my insurance is that high, is because I own a GTR. No one apart from JustCar and Shannons will touch em'. The price you pay for owning what you want

Well thats still less than the insurance i have to pay. is it a r34? if it is then i'm well jealous.

Also, would be nice if you guys know of any mates selling off their R34 GT-Ts coupe with the stock spoiler? I'm trying to look around for a good bargain but these cars are a dime a dozen. Hopefully the car hasn't been thrashed before. If they are would there be any tell tail signs of that?

Lastly, for all these insurance policies, if someone reverses into my car and drives off (hit and run) do i still have to pay the excess?

If you cannot provide the details of the guy who reverses into you, then yes you have to pay the excess for the claim. As for my car, no mate, it's an R32  Not a 34.

Tell-tale signs of cars being thrashed, always check the rear inside guards for rubber (no one ever cleanes it off), clutch feel if manual, diff feel when driving (acceleration mainly) check to see if the brake discs are warped heaps (will feel a shudder when slowing down), if the car has a PowerFC, does it ping much? and if so is it pinging while warm? Hope that helps a little, other fellas will be able to fill you in a bit more :D

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
