I remember seeing a thread about this a while ago, but my search turned up fruitless :) please don't kick me for posting this up again. Also, if there is anything here I have said that is wrong or dumb, please correct me by all means.

Just got an Oil Catch Can which appears to be hollow = "unbaffled"? Reading up on it, this means that the can is pretty much pointless ~ not good!

Someone said that steel wool in a stocking stuffed inside will solve this problem. Is this what baffling is? If so, what type of steel wool - what type of stocking :D And is it literally as easy as stuffing it into the can somehow?

PS: Some of the cans I have seen have a filter on the top of it... does this filter have a purpose? I might think about modifying the can to fit a small K&N in there as well (good/bad, you tell me)

You need to make a divider which seperates the inside of the can into 2 halves, one half for each hose. This is best made from thin alloy...

At the bottom of the divider you should drill some holes for the air to go though, note these holes should be at the bottom as it forces the air to go through the stocking which is the next bit.

Stuff some kitchen scoures (spelling, you know what I mean) into stockings, tie them off a put one in each side of the catch can. Dont use steel wool as it can rust!

The stocking should catch the oil but let the air through, so now you have an oil/air seperator :D

So its empty and you cant open it?

My Greedy one has alan keys to take the top off. Where are the locations of the hoses connected to the can? If they are at opposite sites to each other then I guess you could just shove the stocking in between them.

Yeah, the hose connectors are right opposite each other - the design is just like a Cusco can. Even if I can't make the divider inside the can as you suggested, you rekon it's a good idea to just stuff the can with kitchen scouers in stockings?

Mate, are you sure that you cant open it. I'm just asking becuase it looks to me like that bracket around the top might come off or something. If you cant open it and put a seperator in then I would get one of the readline filters to run off one of those outlets, note this is not legal though but it would stop oilly air going back into your intake...

Juts shoving the stockings in through the little hole wont work very well for two reasons:

1) The air is not moving through much of the filter because those outlets are very close together.

2) It would be an absolute biatch to get the filter out when it needs to be replaced.

yea put the filter on one of the blue nozzels. You should be able to get the little filters from places like autobarn etc etc. There is a really good thread on setting up catch cans by sydneykid on here somewhere, try to search for it as it will be a good guide for ya.

My catch can is set up to plumb back into the inlet which is the legal way but if you have a hose from the one of the blue nozzels then connect the little filter somewhere burried in the engine bay then you should be right :(

This is what you need to do:

See the hose comming from the cam cover to the can, yours should be the same. With the one comming from the can to the inlet, instead of running the hose to the inlet run it down into the engine bay so you cant see it then put the filter on the end of it.

Try to find SK's thread as there are many ways to set this up depending on how you us your car. eg, PVC valves block etc etc.

PVC would be a good place to start your search... OR is it PCV Sorry I am not sure...

    • GTSboy, thank you again. i’ve been reading all the other SAU RB25 vacuum line threads and you have the utmost patience for people asking “where do my vacuum lines go”. it’s appreciated. i did also enlist a few other RB guys local to me.  i would like to run 5 to 4. turbo pressure side to wastegate actuator. i would like to run 3 to 1. power steering air valve line to intercooler outlet. (this is how it was previously). i was told 2 is the bleed port for the boost solenoid - which i’m not running - so should be capped.   anyone see any problems with that?

Something like 98% of all fuel in the USA has 10% ethanol: https://afdc.energy.gov/fuels/ethanol-fuel-basics It's labelled as like, AKI, 87, 91, 93 with an E10 or E5 or E15 label on the pump. At a certain point, it's not just "E10" instead of 91. It is 91, 95, 98, and all of them have 10% Ethanol in them. You can also get E85 and E30 which is why you do see some people rolling around with E30 tunes in them.
    • Thanks for the response. This is an 04 EP3 Type R. JDM spec. Fairly certain they're just basic BC racing coils. I do plan to keep as the ride quality on stock I've been told is pretty meh given Sydney roads. If I were to go down that avenue, does NSW require them to be a certain spec (close to original) etc?

    • I've had two super conflicting experiences with blue slips. My 30 year old E39 waltzed through with no issues but my brother in law was knocked back on 12 y/o 3 series due to wiper blades and some cracking in a control arm bush.  What kind of coil overs? Do you want to keep them after?  If it was me I'd get some dirt cheap shocks and springs from eBay or scumtree. Not ideal but will get you over the line and might even be less than $1k.
