ECU cut out/Boost cut at 9.5psi?? Or faulty coils? R33
benl1981 replied to benl1981's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Really! Most of the 6 have the burn marks on the side. I don't know if you can see but it also looks like there is glue in little patches on them. Is this something inside that has leaked? So that is where the spark is escaping you think. Sometimes when you rev it out you can feel the power fluctuating, almost missing. Just lately got that what felt like a boost cut.. -
ECU cut out/Boost cut at 9.5psi?? Or faulty coils? R33

Can somebody help out if they know...thanks -
I'm having some trouble. Put new spark plugs in gapped to 0.8mm. I thought the coils looked ok. Couldn't see a hairline crank on the front, though maybe I missed it. But most of the coils had stange bits on the side where it looked like they had seen lots of heat. Just lately I get a misfire, well more like a boost cut but it happens at just above 3000rpm up a hill in 4th gear at 0.65bar (about 9.5psi).. I thought maybe it is the ECU sensing too much airflow and going rich and retard. But I thought this would be at more like 12-14psi... Can somebody have a look at the pics below..not the best but gives an idea of the what is going on on the side. I heard somebody in the thread saying the heat on the side may be from arcing?

Missfire Boost@4500-5500 RPM - The Answer! (for me at least!)

R33 - does your boost hold to redline in 2nd?
benl1981 replied to benl1981's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
I've got a 3" dump/front and 3 1/2inch cat back (kakimoto) Bugger about the manifold bolts. I can't hear a leak. It is the front most bolt and the rearmost. I can see a tiny little soot around the front one but the rear seems to be still sealed perfectly.. Al the other bolts/studs appear to be intact. It just seemed to have more power up high when I first got it about 6 months ago. Not looking foreard to pulling the turbo off. Also the rear stud might be hard to drill out (need compact drill???) Thanks -
I'm running about 9-10psi but in 2nd gear the boost tends to trail off quite a bit after about 5000rpm. I reckon probably to about 6psi. I have tried a couple of different boost control methods...all the same. I think it happens when it is stock aswell. Feels a little flat whereas before it really took off after 5000rpm. All the hoses seem fine. Could the actuator have deteriorated? There is a couple of missing manifold bolts. Can't hear a leak though. Intercooler pipes etc are tight.

0.8mm gap instead of 1.1mm will I lose any power/response?
benl1981 replied to benl1981's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Thanks mate. Maybe from when it went through quarantine or whatever. The plug itself looked ok... The gap was about 1-1.1mm. Might try some coppers at 0.8mm Apparently the plugs that came out are expensive, but do they have any life left?? -

The ones I've taken out were double platinum. There is one that had heaps of corrosion or something on it. The last picture shows the sparkie..do these look very worn to you? Thanks -
r33 gtst makes 230rwkw at 13psi

Is this HKS turbo you have more responsive than the standard turbo?? I.e. does it boost earlier? -
0.8mm gap instead of 1.1mm will I lose any power/response?
benl1981 replied to benl1981's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Ok. I might just run copper 0.8mm. I'm going to get either BCPR6E or BKR6E I guess heat range 6 should be ok for stockish car. -
You are right if it is a 10psi actuator that is all you will get. If you free it up it doesn't matter. Where things differ slightly is with the R33, they have a solenoid that bypasses a certain amount of air. Fitting a bigger intercooler or exhaust can effect the boost you see because there is something else aswell as the actuator controlling boost that depends on the airflow. Standard actuator on the R33 is 4-5psi, once the solenoid opens it bypasses enough air to hold 7-8psi. If you free things up a little you will need to bypass a little more air to hold the same boost. This is why if people fit exhaust or intercooler to an R33 they gain 0.5 to 1psi. With the R32 I believe it only has an actuator to contol boost so should be same irrespective of exhaust mods etc THis is how I see it anyway. May be a little incorrect

0.8mm gap instead of 1.1mm will I lose any power/response?
benl1981 replied to benl1981's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
So if I am running 7-8psi run 1.1 gap. Otherwise 9-10psi run 0.8mm gap? How much power/response would you lose on stock boost by runnning .8 gap, is it marginal?? -
About to put in some new spark plugs as I have a bit of hesitation. Engine RB25DET. I don't want to put in spark plugs with gap 1.1mm to find out that they should have been at 0.8mm. Car has full 3" exhaust. 10psi and R34 intercooler. ..i.e. small mods. Question: If I get 0.8mm gapped plugs instead of 1.1mm will I lose any power/response?

Spark plug for RB25DET - I know it's been done before ...
benl1981 replied to benl1981's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Thanks...Does anybody know the difference in power/response from using 0.8mm gap if the engine could cope with 1.1mm -

Anybody? Is the BKR6E the platinum, and BCPR6E the copper? If I get 2 years out of the coppers it should be ok. -

Apparenly they don't do the -8 in the iridiums. Would I lose much power if I am running with .8mm instead of 1.1mm if it could actually handle the 1.1mm. I'm going to check my coil packs when I replace the sparkies. Thre is a slight hesitation when boost comes on so I'm thinking either sparkies or coil packs. I don't know how old spark plugs are.... Some say that the cracks are so small you can't even see it?? I was going o do the araldite trick if I can see cracs in them like what some of you guys have done Thanks -

benl1981 replied to benl1981's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
I got prices for the 1.1mm Platinum and iridium. 15 and $13.50 each respectively, however they said that you can not gap them - so if I fin that I should have 0.8mm gap then they're no good. Might grab my sell some coppers. -

benl1981 replied to benl1981's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
I thought iridiums were cheaper than platinums. Oh well if they last a good 60k kms thats ok. -

benl1981 replied to benl1981's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Thanks. Maybe go the iridiums then. About how much are they? Under $10 each? Can I regap them if I find the 1.1mm is a bit too much..I'll have a look around -

benl1981 replied to benl1981's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
To gap them it only takes about 2mins anyway right. Just put the feeler gauge in and bang them a little on a metal table etc. THat's how I ususallly gap them anyway. Surely coopers could last say 25-30k? I heard that even platinums you may not get the 100k kms as the plugs may foul quite a bit. Iridiums the way to go?? You can't gap platinums can you> Thanks -
I see there is heaps of threads on it. But what I am looking for is spark pugs for an R33 RB25DET. I don't really want to spend $17 a spark plug though. Could I get 25k-30k out of the cheap ones (about $4 each) I just see there is a bit of plumbing over the top of the engine and the the coils have to come out etc. It's a reasonable job. Is there any that will give approx 50k or more for around the $10 each mark. I read somewhere that the mid range price ones aren't great i.e. some poeople werehaveing truble with iridiums. Also gap them down to 0.8mm? I guess if platinum you shouldnt change the gap.. Thanks
