Bright orange sounds like a spark from something. Make sure your tyres aren't down to the steel belts, or that your exhaust hasn't come off the hangers etc. Could also be the rear brake pads down to bare metal.
Shortening shout be easy, just need a set of cutters
You just need to check what sort of stopper is used on the end of the cable which connects to the throttle body, many of them can be loosened off so they can be re-used once the cable is shortened.
Yeah, I didn't know whether terminating it too close to the drivers seat would be bad, as some of the earlier comments suggest. Be nice to have some give in the straps in a big accident.
