How much piston to valve clearence do you have?

I just done this but used the checking spring method, got some light duty springs from bunnings and switched these in cyl 1 and 6 on an inlet and exhaust valve.

Was able to check clearence from 20 degrees btdc to 20 degrees atdc every 2 degrees to see exactly how much clearence there was. With the light springs installed it was as easy as gently pressing down on the lifter until it made contact.

Haven't measure yet, was more to check if the 1.2 gasket was going to work ok.

Still need to pull it down and decide if I wanna get CA625 headstuds or not and install new timing kit and waterpump.

  2. Cheers matr, end up getting some foam from highoctane.

Exciting stuff happening now! Picked up the head on thursday and starting checking/assembling it all.

Head is RB26, ferrea 0.5mm stainless valves, bronze valve guides, full 'raceport', and running the custom kelford 272 10.25 cams from the 25 head.

Put some playdough in to check piston to valve clearances with the 1.2 gasket and dropped the head on.

Put cams and timing gear on to check tdc and set the cam centerlines.

Then wanted to strap on the fun stuff for a pic! Cant wait to finish it off.

  3. Like the others have said if youre not willing to spend 20k on just your motor then just get a stock replacement.

Heres a quick run down on parts cost. My prices are probably a little cheaper as i get trade price

Pistons/rods youre looking at around 3k for a spool kit if you option in your upgraded rod bolts and pins etc. (Comes with bearings)
Machining/assembly for my motor cost me 2200 for balance, bore, hone, acid clean block, machine sump for girdle. Mains were good as it has been done before for the billet mains, but tunnel bore/hone could be on the cards depending.
Nitto pump 1500 or N1 pump with gears 1000

Plus the rest of the stuff, gaskets seals, baffles, breathers, cams and then the big killer which is labour.

RB26 Built head cost me 5k - race port, ferrea os valves, bronze guides, kelford springs, full service, seats cut etc. Doesnt include cams. Obviously you don't have to go that crazy on your head as I'm chasing big power.

You could potentially get away with 7k+/- for a fully upgraded built bottom end. Get your head serviced, mild port, throw some cams and springs in roughly 3k+/-. Atleast you'd have a reliable motor ready to go when you decide to make more power instead of dropping 40-50k in a short amount of time.

  4. Small update, picked up covers that i got dechromed and painted body colour. What an expensive process... looks top shit though! New 26 head is due back tomorrow so next week can put it on and check piston to valve clearances and stuff. Couple gaskets to get as well for exhaust mani too. Car SHOULD be up and running next month.

Gotta pull the baffles out and give them a clean up, does anyone know where to get new foam inserts?

  5. Got a little bit more done on her today. Hardlines almost finished, just have to drill out a couple holes and put the nutserts in. Come up pretty good so far. Also picked up a few fittings and sorted the surge tank block. Bulkheads are installed just need to get the hose down to the hardline and plumb it all up. Decided to go hardline in the boot now as I've got a heap left over from undercar. Hopefully get it a bit sexier in the boot.

You're on the waiting list as well. I've been recommended the 182-SE type that will be available Nov. Might work out as I intend on doing other things while my motors being built.

How difficult was it to remove the AC lines and refit them for your bay respray? I'm actually thinking the same, although I have ABS, so that might be a bit of a pain.

Nah a/c was easy, there wasnt any gas in em so just popped em off pulled the boots off and the painters taped it all up. I pulled my brake lines out as well. Just have to rebleed them when its closer to driving.

    So much progress!
    Are you unemployed but wealthy?
Stay at home dad with wealthy Mrs?
    Teetotal?

Hahah if only, that would be the dream. Nah I'm a sparky, shifts jump around all the time. I was on nights last week then days mon tues and now back on nights for the next couple weeks so will be good time to get a few more things done on her while waiting for the head.

Will find out soon, waiting on a new battery as sitting so long has stuffed the battery..

Chasing an issue where it fires on 5 cylinders, what would cause cylinder 3 to not fire? Ive changed plugs, new coil and now coilpack harness.

    Injectors?

Had a problem with a 33 had intermittent firing issues on cyl 3 but was something broken in the head. Would be ok sometimes then die sometimes.

what size and back space are those welds? And how much clearance do you have on the rear brakes? looks great with the 27" (27.5) radial!

Theyre a 15x8 6.5 bs. Its got a 10mm spacer on it which isn't ideal but I had to space it off the brakes (only need 3mm but wanted a little more). If i was gonna do it again i'd get 15x8 6"bs. Would push it out to around where mine sit now. Wish I could slam a 275/60 under it :(

  10. My heads being done atm for my RB34 running a precision 7675. It has the following:

Ferrea os valves, bronze guides, kelford beehive springs and ti retainers, race port and just general stuff like a deck, seat cut, valve seals etc.

If you're going to port it definitely get the lumps removed on the exhaust side and smooth out the bowls. My machinist calls that his street port. It's around $800 for the street porting if I remember correctly

  11. Popped down to the shop after work today and slapped my sump on. Bottom ends ready to roll now.

Stole a couple of crimps while I was down there and got the surge tank 90% sorted. Gotta pull the 3rd line out and put a bung in then she can get bolted in and not come out... Until we need more fuel ?

  12. Have had the inlaws up for the last couple weeks so nothing has really been done on her. Went down and picked up a new set of MTs. Can't wait to get em fitted up and see how they sit in the guards. Also finished mounting the surge tank, relays are mounted so will finish wiring them up sometime this week.

We also decided to go to a 26 head, it's getting built atm and going to contain a full race port, ferrea valves, kelford springs, cut seats and a service. Hopefully should be done early next month.

  13. Spent a few hours on it this morning and painted the block. Came up alright, few hard to get spots around the deck that I missed cause I didnt want to get paint on/inside.

    XDvaBuW.jpg

Fitted up my crank trigger as well. Thinking going for a 12t on there instead of the 6t.

    IVMqwUg.jpg

Went to put the sump on but didn't have any pickup o rings left so ordered that, rear main, cam seals and rocker cover seals as well. Hopefully next couple days ill have the short block all bolted together.
