Thanks for the suggestions SKiT_R31 i'll look into that And yeah sorry i maybe didnt make it clear the exhaust im talking about is the Rb20DE from a GT Passage (jap spec). The power loss doesnt seem to have a miss associated, the car just pulls up to about 3 - 3.5rpm then after that it just stops pulling and makes a nice exhaust/air noise (in other words it sounds like its going hard, but its not). i also recently installed a pod filter, and ive only really noticed it after that becuase ive started revving it up more becuase of the noise. I've triple checked all air intake connections etc so it cant be that but maybe? And also, is the stock timing for a RB30E 15 degrees BTDC?
-
Hmm maybe it isnt 2.25 im sure the vernier caliper i used read 2.25 though. Anyway, does anyone have any idea about it running rich? the spark plugs are black, and at idle the exhaust has an irregular little 'pop' noise. And then as soon as i get in the high revs it feels like its running lean becuase of the loss in power?
-
really? That's very very weird becuase i measured the diameter of my STOCK rb20DE and Rb30 exhaust in the middle of the system (under the car) and it was 2.25 inches. And thats stock as a rock.
-
Nah this 2.25 is the factory exhaust off the RB20DE! And im pretty sure the rb30 uses 2.5inch factory thuogh im not sure. Yeah i think its the charcoal canister i actually have no idea what they do but is it ok if im using the RB20de one on the Rb30 engine? And nah bro it's an R31 ,some R31's came out with RB20DE red tops (with the crappy NICS system)
-
OK that's what i thought. Also, im using the black thing (black cylinder about 15cm long and 7cm wide?) that seems to have 2 air hoses connecting to the top of it and a fuel hose at the bottom ( i have no idea what this thing is) from the Rb20, does this matter? it looked exactly the same as the RB30 one.

Hey guys, i did an engine conversion from a RB20DE redtop to a RB30E. I used the original 20de exhaust which is 2.25 inch in the middle, is this too small for the RB30E??? Also, the spark plugs are a bit black? i dont see how it could be running rich its feul injected. The AFM is reading 382 ohms which is good apparantly. And it seems to loose power around the 3.5rpm + stage. No idea why but it just feels like its really holding back. Could this just be becuase of the exhaust?? Cheers

VL's have the RB30E engine or the RB20E engine. An easy way to tell the difference is to look at the throttle cable, in the 30's the cable comes right around the head and the 20's cable comes over top the plenum chamber. As for your question, i'd say the gearboxes do bolt up however im not entirely certain. i think the Rb20E 5th gear is of a differnent or shorter ratio aswell?

Rb30e Gearbox Knocking Noises And Grinding?
rorz replied to rorz's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Hmm the box wasnt f***ed before i put it in? oh well Nah i cant do that cause the auto speedo cable was electronic and the manual one is mechanical -
hey guys i just converted my RB30E to a manual, and put about 1.8 litres of gearbox oil in. The gearbox makes all sorts of noises and it didnt in its previous car. Could it be due to lack of gbox oil? And if it is, and i top it up, do you think that since ive been running it like this the synchros are stuffed? And also, after my conversion i noticed my gear ratios are buggered, at 100kmph its revving at about 3.2! My speedo is also very wrong.. could this be due to different diff ratios? as im using the auto diff? Cheers for any help eh Rorz
-
yeah all hoses are sweet, however me and my mate unplugged the leads and plugged them back in and its running MUCH better now. not completeley 100% thouGh? also the gearbox (i presume) is making a wierd little knocking noise as i drive. whats this mean?
-
Its the Rb30 AFM. Update: I cleaned out the plug and now it doesnt cut out after 2000rpm. But it is misfiring? sounds like a V8. Any ideas? cheer

Hey so if you havnt already read, i converted my r31 RB20DE redtop automatic to a Rb30E manual. Took it to the sparkies and got it wired up so it runs now However, it runs sooooo rough. Blowing heaps of blacky white smoke out the back, and wont let me rev any higher than about 1.7? After that it starts chopping out. This engine and computer were both running mint before the engine conversion. Any ideas?? ** UPDATE: Me and my mate had a look at the spark plugs and they're very black, the cars running very rich Also, it seems to be at exactly 2000rpm when it does the 'chopping out' thing. Cheers Rorz

Well i got the car back its running all sweet the sparkies sorted it out, i gave them the information you told me so thanks for that. Unfortunately i still have 3 problems: 1. Its running off just extractors (so its INSANELY loud and it backfires/misfires and whatnot) 2. Driveshaft is sliiightly too long. It still drove fine but i dont know what could happen with that 3. The Auto diff means i have a different diff ratio, so it revs quite high at 70kmph in 5th gear?! Any suggestions would be great, this whole thing is almost finished! i got big plans for this r31 Cheers

Thanks for all the help mate i'll have a look at it tomorrow night and get back to you, Cheers.
-
Cool thanks mate, My cars down at the sparkies at the moment as has been for the past week and they dont seem to be making any progress which is why im asking. Anyone know if it could be becuase of back pressure as my exhaust doesnt bolt up to my extractors.
-
It turns over but just doesnt start. And i used the manual ECU and loom. And i dont know what you mean about the plugs and firing order but when i did the engine converion it was a straight swap i didnt touch any individual parts of the engine e.g. distributer or coil. Any other ideas? also , my old exhaust doesnt bolt up to the extractors... so maybe theres not enough back pressure to start? could that be why?
-
Hey man i have the same problem as you in my R31 skyline, I did a engine and manual conversion and it has spark and fuel but doesnt start. i doubt my timing is out becuase before i did the engine swap the engine was running sweet so theres no reason for the timing to suddenly go out? unless there is a way?

R31 Engine Conversion All Done! But Strange Wiring?
rorz replied to rorz's topic in Classic & Vintage (1950's-1980's)
Cheers for that mate, but i've already towed her down to the auto elecs. Let them sort it out, one more quick question.. my driveshaft is a weeee bit too long (the whole spline on the yoke is in the gearbox), what does this mean? Someone said it could rip my oil seal out? And also, since im using an Auto Diff, i will have different diff ratio correct? Which means it could be slower?? Cheers Rorz -
R31 Engine Conversion All Done! But Strange Wiring?
rorz replied to rorz's topic in Classic & Vintage (1950's-1980's)
ok sweet thanks for the replies, i'll probably tow her down to the auto elecs then cause that sounds a bit over me aye. Im using the GXE harness too (The wiring that goes to the battery, starter, alternator etc) so it shouldnt be too hard to fix, although it still doesnt explain why its not getting spark. Cheers anyway guys -
Hey guys, i was told to post here for some help so i thought i'd try... I have a 1986 Nissan Skyline R31 GT Passage RB20DE Redtop Automatic. I also bought a 1990 R31 GXE RB30E Manual (Auz assembled) I have taken the whole driveline out of the GXE and chucked it in the Passage and everything bolted up sweet (except gbox crossmember and driveshaft which i sussed out) But now the strange part.. i took over the whole ECU and loom and it all plugs in, but the car wont start? So i put a lead straight from the battery to the starter and the engine turns over, but doesnt spark (i looked at a spark plug and it had no spark) Apparantly i need to make it think that its stuck in park in order for the ignition to work, but im out of ideas as to why theres no spark? Distributer and coil are sweet as... Any ideas would be greatly appreciated... Cheers Rorz
