  1. We flew down to Tas on Friday and spent the weekend driving the course in a Hyundai i30, 2000km in 2.5 days was a bit of a stretch but we managed to drive every stage. Once.

Excited & nervous about the event, so many nice roads to drive on and so many places to come unstuck. Think i prefer the north-west & west coast roads to the east, just depending on whether it's wet or not.

Has anyone driven Riana lately? The bridge towards the end is a little, err, not finished?

  2. So Tuggah isnt far away now. No news on who is actually running from SAU? Seems only the Tassie lads are running

847 Early Modern Liam Howarth Larry Howarth 8 LMS C 1995 Nissan Skyline GT- R V-Spec

Looks like two mainlander SAU'ers to me

That would be Dad and I. Car's all set to go and with 8 fresh A050 Ms as of last weekend. Flying down next weekend (30th - 1st) for recee, hopefully the notes arrive before then! Fair to say i'm f'ing excited for it!

  3. Maybe you meant the V70A? They're a gun tyre in the wet.

Hmm could have been, i guess it's still a gamble though. If it dried out we would get smoked by everyone on semis... Plus would have to adjust driving style to suit two different tyres on different surfaces.

  4. We were pushing the budget with 6 tyres so wasn't too impressed to think we will have to find another $1100 in the next few weeks. Our car ran the same set of Yoko Ms for THC and TWP and they still look to have at least 100km in them. I think our plan will be to run 8 Ms, use 4 rotating them day to day and then bring out the fresh 4 any morning it looks like it will be wet. Hopefully this way we may even have enough in a set to do a smaller event later in the year... Don't really see the point running S when you don't have the support team to be there at the beginning of any long transport or dry comp stage.

Another idea i was tossing up for a bit would be to run something like a KU36 for the wet and then the Yoko Ms for the dry. I've heard good things about the KU in the wet but have never used them back to back with any Semi... Would be a cheaper alternative too!

  5. We're not sure if we will be dragging the Evo down for another Wrest Point. Unfortunately the cost/benefit ratio is rooted and even more so this year with the very early afternoon finish meaning it is really only a 1.5day event now. Add to the highway (or seaway) robbery that is the "Spirit o Tas" and its not hard to find other things to spend the cash on.

Pity really, because Tahune/Airwalk is the bomb!

^^Ditto. Just to get the car, trailer and tow vehicle over cost more than the event itself... Would be worth it if it was a Fri arvo, all day Sat and all day Sun.

Dad and I had a clean event with no major dramas. Didn't go as well as we were hoping but we/the car got home in tact and ready for Targa Tas in April.

In car vid from Cygnet stage (including the stage finish).

All that's left to do now before TT is a good service and get some new rubber. Does anyone know if the 8 tyre rule change has been confirmed?

  6. What compound? I have driven a car with what I was told were PFC01s and I loved them. Really, really nice. I grabbed some PFC06 which are meant to be the Endurance spec PFC01 with a little less bite but far kinder on rotors and I simply found them WAAAAY too bitey and was forever locking brakes :( Was a tad gutted

Looks like i have the 01 "Race Compound" which i take it are the PFC01s (SKU 7793.01.18.44). Sounds like they should do the job then! Have only done roughly 100kms on them so far with no track time, they do feel rather powerful from cold though..

  7. Used to be a ferodo guy, but have switched to Pagid and been very impressed with performance and low pad/rotor qear. RS19/29 is a good tarmac rally choice IMHO.

Can also vouch for the Pagids - worked very well with no fuss. Bit more expensive than the Ferodo's but well worth it from all accounts.

Thanks guys, i'll keep them in mind for our next set. Ended up going with some Performance Friction carbon metalic pads which weren't cheap and are apparently pretty harsh on the rotors. Hopefully we can get at least 500kms out of them though!

In other news the car just got back from getting a bigger pump/injectors/rail and a 3.5" exhaust (3" - 3.5" - 3" before) and is now around 330kw atw. Turns out the car did have a pretty significant boost leak so it wasn't just me thinking the car was getting slower towards the end of THC.

TWP is just around the corner now and hopefully everything goes to plan :D

  8. < 300km old Ferodo DS3000 pads, got over 700kms of competitive out of the last set... Even checked them at service after day one and they were no where near the metal by then. Brakes were working fine and didn't make any noise until after the last Buller stage. Won't be using those next year that's for sure!

  9. Glad to see you're rebuilding so soon Paul. Was great to meet you at THC and i'm sure i'll see you out at future events.

We had an interesting THC, Dad had just recovered in time for the event. Managed to run several minutes faster overall than last year, still not fast enough though! Ended the event with the front brake pads worn half way through the backing plate and a car that was overheating and down on power. Hopefully will have everything ready for TWP!

Anyway here's a vid of one of the better stages for those that are interested. Watch in HD if you have fast enough internet...

  10. That sucks! I hope he's on the mend?!?!

Sorry to hear mate, I hope he is on the mend.

The one thing I can say is if you don't make it, Octagon are very accomodating in transferring your entry to future events. Don't know of many other organisations that do that.

Thanks guys. No progress today, the doctors are still trying to run "tests" to work out what's up. Going to make the call next weekend. We talked today and i'm still going to try and run in the event so hopefully i can find a nav last minute if worse comes to worst.

Will keep the entry transfer in mind though!

  12. Woo,

Have now entered the 33 GTR into THC '11, TWP '12 and TT '12 .

The car's brakes are (hopefully) sorted out after last year when we ran out of brakes 2nd day at THC and 3rd stage at TWP, have a big new radiator on the way and car is significantly lighter (weighed in at 1620kg at THC).

    Can't wait!

Now just have to get a new set of tyres in the next few weeks and change all the oils/filters/coolant... Had a good run with DZ03G's last year but with the price of A050s at the moment i think we might give them a go.

  13. I'm on the fence with DRS still, great idea and would be interesting if it could be used for X seconds per lap wherever the driver liked but as mentioned that's just going to separate the guy in front even further..

What if it to use it you needed to be within the 1 second window from the driver in front plus your last lap was within 0.5 seconds faster than the guy in front. Would help the faster guys to pass the back markers and would mean that there would be less chance of the chasing driver to put in a really shoddy lap then fluke the section near the DRS detection, allowing them straight past the driver in front.. That plus deactivating the DRS as soon as the chasing driver is half way past the driver in front should make some interesting corners and allow the talented drivers to get through rather than anyone who can get within a second of the car in front.
