I'll transfer my queries from the other thread: How suitable is the OS 3 litre block to being used in a road car application? Are there under bonnet (or other ) clearance issues when fitting to an otherwise standard engine bay?
-
A question - apart from the price (of course) is there any inherent design in the OS3L engine that would affect the long term reliability as a road engine?

Hi Mik Sorry, interesting post but my pedantic streak has to question a couple of the quoted figures: I bought a brand spanker 24U block for $3,700 in Australia and was quoted under $2,000 for a "plain vanilla" 05U block. 273K is zero degrees Celcius - surely the engine assembly rooms don't need to be this cold? Cheers, Gav

There's no question the Jun crank is a nice bit of kit - it's a shame it's hidden away in the block/sump! My "HKS" crank is even rougher than Sly33's, but that's another story over a beer

An honest business that complianced my R32 GTR under the old scheme. I can recommend them.

Slightly off topic and I aplogise, but the Tomei URL that Pete quoted is interesting. The specs on the ARMS B9046 GTR kit are interesting - the turbine and compressor wheels sizes are huge compared to other "bolt on" kits! Is this the highest power bolt on kit available?

I thought RB26 lifters were solid anyway??

Daniel gave a better explanation than I'm able to offer. The long and the short of my choice was based on my tuner's recommendation at the time as he had seen good results from step 2 cams (11.?? mm lift) and the 264IN/272EX. The idle isn't too lumpy at all, although it does hunt around a little unless idle is set to around 1000 rpm. In terms of hardware, I added valve springs to suit as well as new retainers and guides - all HKS. Best to buy a matched kit along with the cams at the same time.

There is a fairly recent and comprehensive post on just this: http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...topic=91381&hl= Personally, I'm using GT-RS low mounts for my 2.8L setup. If I did it again, however, I'd have a very close look at t04z for additional top end and a lower overall installation cost. There are a number of other combos that could give you the required results including Garrett 707160-5 low mounts. Cheers Gav

I'm glad you are impressed. They are certainly not a popular terb for the "keyboard tuners" but in the real world I was certainly happy with these on my std 2.6. I'm expecting good things with my 2.8 and higher ratio (gts4) diffs.

Ring the insurance ombudsman for free advice. The insistance for a valuation at your expense may be borderline acceptable insurance practice. After all, did they indicate that this would be required for renewal when you first signed up? Obviously they knew (or should have known) it would be the case at the time - so in effect this is a form of "Duty of Disclosure" in reverse.

With a bit of internet searching found this site: http://www.turbohoses.com

I'm actually after black if possible, but it seems that the industry has a hankering for "bling" colours.

Has anyone seen silicon hosing in other colours BESIDES blue?

Geez Cuong - the only build that I know of that's taken longer than my R is your Z!!

Be careful what you ask for, if you really want the BEST performance on the drag strip you need to be brutal. This means a very high RPM launch to avoid bogging down, depending on the tyres and the track condition. This varies somewhere between 5 and 7k. There are some tricks and tips you can do to minimise damage to the driveline, such as: * preloading the drive train by slipping the clutch and holding against the handbrake. If your handbrake is in good condition and you time this right as you will be releasing the brake fully as you move your left hand forward to snatch second. * go easy on the change from second into third, as you can destroy a GT-R gearbox even with near standard power by brutal changing into this gear. * with standard gearing and near standard power you should be crossing the line near the top of fourth and you shouldn't have to grab fifth. Be aware that drag racing is a sure fire way to ensure your GT-R will cost you money. Your previous 12.5 is about right for what you should be getting. Perhaps with practice and more brutal launching you could get around the 12.3 mark, but you need to ask yourself if this improvement is worth the money. Of course if you can afford it and it "presses your buttons" then go for it!

January - but If Ant hears that my engine won't be together until Feb! (Mods - pls lock ND4SPD out of this thread lol)

Hi Jason It really comes down to what you plan to use the car for. Personally I think track work is the hardest on the lubrication system as lateral forces are more likely to result in oil starvation than straight line acceleration (the pics on the Tomei website explain this well). I went for the Performance Metalcraft option as it provided both additional capacity and baffling without hanging too low (I don't like how low the Trust sump extensions hang). Not a cheap option 'tho! With regards to oil pumps - there is plenty of posts on the subject about what you need. I picked up a Trust pump at a good price, so that's what I use. I also use a restrictor in the block oil feed gallery. An oil cooler is a good idea also if you do track work. I'm sure there are plenty of other ideas and options, but this is the way I've gone. Cheers Gav

Thanks guys - again appreciate the input and advice. Cheers Gav

Slowly and from afar Actually, should be in a position to start the run in later this month and then spin some rollers in anger in December. I have no intention of short circuiting the run-in procedure, however.

Buy, Build & Use A Tech Edge A/f Ratio Meter
Gav replied to Sydneykid's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
SK - some questions on the lambda sensor: Where would you recommend the sensor be placed for a GT-R? Given the relatively cheap cost of the sensors, it ist advantageous to use more then one (eg. one for each "branch" on the front pipes)? Can the meter monitor/log more than one sensor? Does your sensor use a standard spark plug bung? Sorry about all the questions, but I'm very interested given the relatively low cost compared to the valuable information that these can provide. Cheers Gav -
I suspect I will be in the same boat Let me know how it goes. Gav

Cooling Requirements For Gtr Track Use
Gav replied to pnblight's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Interesting that the Australian delivered GT-Rs had a transfer case cooler, however I haven't heard of this being much of an issue for 'Rs without this fitted. -
Your not worried about the noise and crunch of dog engagement on the street?
