L20et - Building For 250kw+
dwayne293 replied to dwayne293's topic in Classic & Vintage (1950's-1980's)
Thanks for the help again. Does anybody know if the timing chain for L20ET is the same as for L24E or does anybody have the correct part number? I will try repco again for bearings, did not realise they were the same as L20E. Don't know about injectors gonna go have a sus at what others will physically bolt in, hopefully GT-R ones fit. I'm pretty confident now that the L20 could handle around 1.5 bar from a GT3040 without blowing apart since they are built to last and have such a low compression ratio, which should reel in a low 200rwkw figure...... hopefully. Now I think the only major mods I will do are try and shorten the piston skirts, port the head, custom manifold to fit turbo, maybe a bigger cam, injectors, ECU, oil cooler, big front mount. Now the search begins for rings and bearings Anything at all related, you know where to post. Cheers Dwayne -
L20et - Building For 250kw+
dwayne293 replied to dwayne293's topic in Classic & Vintage (1950's-1980's)
I am just trying to avoid the L28 as I will need to get it inspected at transport SA if I do the change, and I don't think they will look too kindly on a big turbo hanging off the side along with aftermarket engine management, etc. I was told today by a z car shop mechanic not to bother with forged pistons for only 250kw as the L20 internals are strong as f**k and I should use a garret GT3040 or similar just as long as I have the fuel system to back it up, intercooler and exhaust. So now I'm confused as hell. Either way the engine is out so I'm cleaning it all up and searching for new big end and main bearings (what a mission, any ideas?) and replacing timing chain as well as the piston rings, but I have no clue whether to bother with forged pistons and I definitely won't if it is unnecessary. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm -
L20et - Building For 250kw+

Thanks heaps for the replies, Stegefumer, the Wolf I was going to sell you is long dead but I will use the new version (much improved over V3). I am going to try to stick with the same cylinder head and block, as with capacity. My budget isn't enormous, I just want a bit of boot so I guess 200rwkw would make me happy ;-) I have read somewhere that VG30 injectors fit, is this the DET or DETT? Do GT-R injectors fit? I think a mid size turbo (~450HP) would be enough, and I'm not too sure about the lag as I have heard the original turbo is laggy more due to design than physical size and output. I will get a custom manifold made up to minimize length and therefore cooling area of the exhaust gas, and heat wrap it. I am hoping to gain the desired power output at boost levels under 1.5 bar depending on turbo choice. As I said before, I am a bit hesitant to use an aggressive cam as it will only decrease off boost response and I now doubt I will use a metal head gasket.... Just wanna get a good power figure out of the old girl and prove the L20 has potential. Any more ideas no matter how crazy they sound please don't hesitate to post Cheers Dwayne -
Hey all, Some may remember me from this section of the forum a couple of years ago. I own an MR30 hatch with an L20ET, did have a wolf 3d, supra front mount, R200 LSD and other goodies. Due to poor tuning, it detonated and cracked a compression ring in cylinder 5. I have decided to revive the long dead R30 and have big plans for the entire car but focusing on engine first. Ghostrider, Stagefumer, looking to you guys for this one. Do you think it is possible to pull around 250kw at the crank of a stock capacity L20ET while having any low down pull? I would rather stick with the L20 for easier rego and all that, but your answers will influence me either way. Does anybody know of anywhere who does forged pistons and rods for the L20? What about L24E? Is the crank/block any weaker in the L24E as I could use that bottom end with the L20 head if it will stand up to the punishment. I am considering using a metal head gasket to lower the already low CR of the L20 so it can handle high boost levels, but not too sure how this will affect off boost performance. Also hesitant on using an aggressive camshaft as that will take away even more bottom end. Will an L24E, L28E(T) or L26 intake manifold have correct port sizing for the L20 head? I want to get a neater manifold without the spaghetti vacuum lines which all seem pretty useless, if not I might disconnect all but the neccessary lines and plug/ weld them up. Injectors - what fits? I am going to be using a newer version of the wolf ecu so no worries on what the standard computer will run. Also trying to figure out what flow rate I will need for 250kw+, I'm guessing at least 800cc/min. Also are there any aftermarket fuel pumps that will mount in the same area (under right rear door) that will support this power level? Is it worth haveing the head ported, etc? Anything else I should know please feel free to mention sorry for the massive post, there just isn't much info on the L20 on the net and I would love to stick with it instead of chucking an RB in (I already own a 32 GTS-t) as I would like the engine bay to be as bare as possible without all the newer crap in there. Thanks guys, POST AWAY!!!!!!

No mate camry stockies won't fit, the PCD is correct, but the hole in the centre for the hub is too small. Kinda hard to explain but trust me, they won't fit properly unless you grind out that centre hole or something

Random 32 Gts-t Questions
dwayne293 replied to dwayne293's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
Thanks FAT32, I was going to check the manifold as well as I have heard of them breaking studs etc, which won't be a problem as I am a diesel mechanic myself. I thought I would just check first before checking genuine prices incase Nissan charge something like $50000 for a gasket like they do most other parts. I think i will go with 10w synthetic oil next should be fine Cheers again Dwayne -
Hey all, Upon recent inspection i have found that the nuts securing my turbo to manifold have loosened themselves off and the turbo-manifold flange gasket has blown apart. I know this has been a problem for some owners, but was just wondering if anybody has fixed it and prevented it from re-occuring and whether anybody knows the cause of it? Also would like to know where i can get a flange gasket in Adelaide, ie to repco, etc sell them and how much they are worth. Also wondering whether anyone runs 0 or 5w synthetic oil as I am leaning towards 10w at the moment due to the age of the RB20 Thanks in advance Dwayne

Hey all, have been trying to get rid of this for a while now, but as I have bought an R32 recently i need it gone Car is a 1985 MR30 Skyline Hatch L20ET engine ( 6 cyl, EFI, Turbo) 5 Speed Gearbox R200 (as far as i know) LSD Wolf 3D Version 3 ECU Supra FMIC 2.5" Exhaust I think thats about it Includes boxes of assorted parts including an intake manifold, clutch plate, distributor, flywheel and who knows what else The engine cracked the rings in cylinder 5 a while back, I have removed the head but the bottom end of the engine remains in the car. Head, manifolds and turbo will be sold with the vehicle The body of the car has no rust whatsoever but both front quarter panels are damaged and the front bumper is cracked. Interior is in excellent condition. I love this car and with a little bit of work will be back to its original condition which was amazing, but as to the purchase of a new car and being on an apprenticeship, the funds just are not there to do the work. SA buyers only please as the car is not driveable. Thanks everyone

L20et Part Numbers Desperately Needed!!!!!!!
dwayne293 replied to dwayne293's topic in Classic & Vintage (1950's-1980's)
Ok im now selling the car created a new thread. Ghostrider, i have the turbo rocker cover, would rather keep it but if the price is good i will let it go. Pm me -
Hey all, I figured this would be more relevant here than in for sale section as i don't know what to classify it as. I need to get rid of the 30 so I can get a 32 as my parents won't let me have both Car is 85 R30 Hatch L20ET engine with busted rings in cylinder 5, head is removed, block is in engine bay still. Supra intercooler 15" Speedy hyperfang rims Wolf 3D version 3 ecu with hand controller R180 or R200 LSD Koni Suspension 2.5" exhaust Sony CD player JBL 6.5" splits front and rear Soundstream amp other bits and pieces loads of spares from intake manifolds to interior door trim (brand new) r30 workshop manuals would make a good rb project car, does have big dents on both front quarter panels and front bumper is broken though. otherwise, drop an L24 in it and stick the manifold/turbo off the L20 on it, would all bolt up. ASKING 2500 OR NEAR OFFER FOR THE LOT located in Adelaide

L20 Parts Needed Urgently!
dwayne293 replied to dwayne293's topic in Classic & Vintage (1950's-1980's)
Thanks for the replies guys... I was a bit worried about going straight to nissan as I don't want to take out a mortgage to rebuild my engine but there aren't too many other options. I may have a replacement engine lined up anyway but would still like to rebuild mine, even if it is as a spare But yeah, part numbers or any contacts would be greatly appreciated Cheers Dwayne -
Hi everyone, My L20ET has recently expired and I am trying to rebuild it but cannot find anywhere selling parts for it.... I am after a set of rings, possibly a piston, and a head gasket, maybe big ends, mains, etc etc. Does anyone know where I can find these parts, in Adelaide? I have seen a PNV R30 for sale on here a while back which had just been rebuilt so some place must sell these parts? She's gonna be a beast when i put it back together though ;-) Thanks in advance Dwayne

Will try to get some asap, car is in my avatar. I have pics of when the front wasnt damaged but don't know how to post them up -
Hey all, A sad day for me. I don't really want to do this but my current finances and need for transportation have influenced this decision. The car is an 85 R30 hatch with the L20ET engine. Recently dropped a cylinder, have pulled the head off and found it is most probably a broken ring (haven't removed sump) The car currently has; Wolf3D V3 ECU Supra FMIC Koni suspension front and rear Speedy Hyperfang 15" Rims Xtreme heavy duty clutch K&N Pod filter Bleed valve VDO boost guage Nardi Torino steering wheel Trust gearknob Sony CD player JBL 6.5" speakers front and rear powered by soundstream amp Other things that i may have forgotten.... Comes with full R30 service manuals (for the L24 but most applies to the L20ET) Boxes of assorted spare parts Will need new front left and right quarter panels and a new front bumper (still on the car but dented). The rest of the car is in extremely good condition, the interior is excellent and the rest of the body is straight. I am looking for $3500 for the car as is (including the engine/head. etc) or may consider keeping the wheels etc for a lower price. I need the money to pay off the rest of my loan so I can start again. Car is located in Adelaide Interested parties please contact me by PM here, MSN or email { [email protected] } or SMS 0414302551.
