McLaren now focused on points after Lewis Hamilton loses Spanish GP pole McLaren says its focus now is on scoring as many points as possible in the Spanish Grand Prix, after accepting the stewards' decision to demote Lewis Hamilton to the back of the grid. Hamilton was stripped of his pole position after the FIA ruled that he had breached the rules in not returning to the pits after completing his qualifying lap. The stewards who discussed the matter did not accept that a team error, which meant not enough fuel went in to Hamilton's car prior to his final run in Q3, was grounds for force majeure. When asked by AUTOSPORT for a reaction to the stewards' decision, a McLaren spokesman said: "We accept that the stewards did not agree with our interpretation of force majeure. Our aim is now to maximise the points we can score tomorrow." http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/99565

Hamilton loses Spanish GP pole position Pastor Maldonado will start from pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix after Lewis Hamilton was excluded from qualifying for not returning to the pits after setting his best lap. Hamilton's McLaren was found to not have had enough fuel on board to comply with the rules that demand a car returns to the pits under its own power after qualifying with enough petrol for a one-litre sample to be provided to the FIA. Only under circumstances of 'force majeure' are drivers allowed to stop on that slowing down lap - and stopping deliberately because there is not enough fuel to finish the tour and supply that sample is not acceptable. Following a meeting with the stewards at the Spanish Grand Prix, McLaren was informed that the 'technical' problem that it suggested was the reason for Hamilton being told to stop was not enough grounds to justify its action. The team explained that not enough fuel had been put into the car ahead of the final qualifying lap - which the FIA did not agree was enough reason for 'force majeure' As a result, the stewards ruled that Hamilton be excluded from qualifying, but would be allowed to start from the back of the grid. "The stewards received a report from the Race Director which stated that during post-qualifying scrutineering a sample of fuel was required from car 4, however, the car failed to return to the pits under its own power as required under Article 6.6.2 of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations," said the stewards in a statement. "The Stewards heard from the team representative Mr Sam Michael who stated that the car stopped on the circuit for reasons of force majeure. A team member had put an insufficient quantity of fuel into the car thereby resulting in the car having to be stopped on the circuit in order to be able to provide the required amount for sampling purposes. "As the amount of fuel put into the car is under the complete control of the Competitor the Stewards cannot accept this as a case of force majeure. "The Stewards determine that this is a breach of Article 6.6.2 of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations and the Competitor is accordingly excluded from the results of the Qualifying Session. The Competitor is however allowed to start the race from the back of the grid." The result means that Maldonado will start ahead of Fernando Alonso for Sunday's race. Speaking before being informed of the penalty, Hamilton reckoned that in the event of a penalty he could still deliver good race pace. "Looking at our long runs, I think our long runs were not too bad," he said. "The option tyre was not spectacular with the set-up we had, but we have made some changes so it should be better in that sense. "The long run on the prime was very good, but then again so was it with the guys just behind me. Overtaking here is very, very tough as it has showed in previous years, but we do have DRS. "I would hope we can overtake but I would doubt it – but I would do everything I could to move forwards. "Definitely the guy in front, the top two or three, generally have an easier job because they have a lot clearer air. But we will give it our all and we hope with improved pit stops as well we hope we can make steps forward." Revised Spanish GP grid: 1. Pastor Maldonado Williams-Renault 2. Fernando Alonso Ferrari 3. yep, the full read. THE V8 Supercars Championship will return to Eastern Creek International Raceway in Sydney this year. The newly refurbished circuit will now fill the August 24-26 date that was to have been the Winton weekend, while the rural Victorian circuit will now move to hosting the penultimate event of the championship on November 16-18. The Winton event takes the place of the previous ‘to be announced’ calendar slot and will fall exactly two weeks after the Yas V8 400 in Abu Dhabi and two weeks before the season-finale Sydney Telstra 500. “We believe Australia’s largest city can have motorsport nirvana with a thrilling circuit race at a great permanent venue followed by all the street circuit bells and whistles of the Sydney Telstra 500,” V8 Supercar CEO David Malone says. “We compete three times in Victoria and three times in Queensland each year so our view is we can sustain three New South Wales events, certainly for this year, based on their different market appeal, location, timing and format." The Australian Racing Drivers Club will promote the Eastern Creek V8 Supercar event, which falls the weekend before the ultra-successful Muscle Car Masters and makes for strong back-to-back weekends of motorsport. Glenn Matthews, CEO of the ARDC, managers of Eastern Creek International Raceway, said that since the venue's $11-million refurbishment, Sydney’s motorsport fans had been loud and constant in their call for V8 Supercars to return. "Eastern Creek is the only permanent race circuit in Sydney and is a perfect complement to the street circuit event held at Olympic Park in December," Matthews said. “Having the V8 boys back is ideal to re-launch the new Eastern Creek, with exhilarating new circuit layouts, refurbished pit lane and upgraded spectator facilities almost complete, combined with September marking the 60th Anniversary of the ARDC. “Over the coming months we will also be making further important announcements regarding Eastern Creek that I am sure will be well received." The V8 Supercars Championship has not raced at Eastern Creek since 2008, when Will Davison took his maiden victory for Jim Beam Racing. Since then the venue has regularly been used by V8 Supercar teams for corporate ride days and last year it hosted the pre-season Official Test and Launch Day. The Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship has a long history at Eastern Creek, first competing there in 1992. A total of 17 ATCC/V8SC events have been held at Eastern Creek in that time with the series grand finale hosted by the venue in 2003 and 2004 – both years where two events were held at the circuit in the same season. Eastern Creek was the site of the Holden Racing Team’s first ATCC/V8SC win in 1994 with the late Peter Brock and the venue in 2007 where Mark Skaife broke Brock’s long-time ATCC/V8SC event wins record. The news means that the 2012 V8 Supercars Championship will be contested over 15 events and 29 individual races. http://www.v8supercars.com.au/championship/newsarticle/double-dose-of-v8-action-for-sydney/tabid/70/newsid/12373/default.aspx -

Daniel Ricciardo says he got "better and better" in each session as he worked his way to a career-high P6 grid slot for Sunday's Bahrain GP. While his team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne struggled on the other end of the timesheets, Ricciardo demonstrated his talent around the 5.412 km-long Sakhir circuit. Breaking into Q3 - for the second time in four races - Ricciardo impressed as he clocked a 1:32.912, which put him less than half a second behind pole-sitter Sebastian Vettel. "It feels very good and I am very happy with that result," said Ricciardo. "We had a below average week in China with some updates we brought. We persisted with them and we made them work significantly better here, which is down to the hard work of the whole team. "My communication with the team was also very good and it has helped us get into Q3. I was happy with my driving and I got better and better in each of the sessions. It's not always you have a day like this, so I can enjoy the moment, bearing in mind that it's tomorrow that counts." He added: "Now we have to put it all together for the race and tonight we will be looking at all our strategy options regarding tyres. "It helps to go into a race feeling confidence and starting from sixth, I have to focus on scoring as many points as possible, as this is the best chance we have had so far. I hope I am still smiling tomorrow evening." Meanwhile, Vergne, who qualified P19, is under investigation for ignore the red light at the weighbridge. http://www.planetf1.com/driver/18227/7689634/Ricciardo-very-happy-with-qualy what a nice guy.

Nico Rosberg followed up his Shanghai victory with another commanding performance in the second free practice session for the Bahrain Grand Prix. As off-track controversy escalated amid news that Force India would miss the session because of concerns about its personnel travelling back from the circuit after dark, Rosberg emphasised Mercedes' Sakhir speed with a pacesetting 1m32.816s. The German set that time just over half an hour into the afternoon, ending a busy spell in which the two Mercedes and Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel had been swapping the top spot. When he set that lap, Rosberg went a full 0.8 seconds quicker than anyone else, and although that margin reduced, no one was able to topple the Mercedes. Mark Webber ended up second for Red Bull, 0.446s down on Rosberg, and 0.263s ahead of his team-mate Vettel, who had a near-miss with compatriot Michael Schumacher near the end of the session. Neither car was damaged, and Schumacher completed the day in fifth, a second off his pacesetting Mercedes team-mate. The seven-time champion was sandwiched between the two McLarens, with Lewis Hamilton fourth and Jenson Button sixth - 0.9s and 1.4s off Rosberg respectively. Sauber had an encouraging session, as Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez took seventh and 10th, split by Fernando Alonso's Ferrari and Romain Grosjean's Lotus. Force India's decision not to take part meant only 22 cars ran, with the Silverstone squad's crew instead getting an early start on preparing the cars for Saturday and qualifying before leaving the circuit. There were myriad minor excursions over kerbs and run-off areas on the still-dusty track, but no major dramas, incidents or problems, with all the cars that ran completing between 25 and 35 laps.
