have you tired using a thin walled socket? thats what i had to use for mine. Super cheap auto do one. SCA Socket it had a protective nylon sleeve which can be removed for tighter spaces..i had to with mine.

What kind of spacer are you referring to mate? do you have any pics? cheers

Just make sure you give it a wash after your done sanding to ensure you remove all dust. Also, what paint are you using? Make sure you use something that can with stand the sun to avoid cracking.

+1 Also, will a short shifter wear the gear ox out faster as you are shifting the gears in quicker?
