  1. Yes I do, and I agree with you. I dont think someone should be descriminated against because they own a nice car, modifying a car to improve its performance doesnt make it more dangerous, it makes it safer - as long as its been done correctly. where do you think SAPOL get their guidance from when they want to know what is defectable? Regency. I actually (as part of my research) rang Holden hill police station and asked what BOVs are legal - I was told 'no BOV is legal', and 'we will defect any car with a BOV' - I pointed out that cars come with stock BOVs, and was told the information they have is that ALL BOVs are illegal. When I asked him where they got the info from he told me it comes from regency. I agree with getting mods correctly certified, but as pointed out look at the other states, you can do alot of mods yourself, if you go beyond those mods, you need an 'approved person' to inspect the mods to ensure they are safe. Here, the cost of an engineer to get mods certified is 3 times more expensive than NSW, VIC is also alot cheaper, and Qld is open slather. BUT, even if you attempt to do the right thing, you can still be bent over at regency - these retired tram conductors and disagree with your $2000 engineers report, and you have no recourse - period. If it was a reasonable system, people could get mods certified and then it would keep the SAPOL off everyones back, but at the moment, as policy is 'the car must be stock', SAPOL can defect almost any car AND as Martin pointed out, they pick on the nice ones. And to put things in perspective, I was told by a prominent engineer here in SA, that, 'they have changed the rules' and went on to say that he believes the current system is unfair, as he can prove a car is the safest, best handling car of its type on the road, and regency can still tell him no, you cant have it registered. you say people will never like or agree with the rules - why not speak to people in Qld (I did via this forum) or NSW, you will find you are wrong. But yes there will always be those that whinge for no good reason. ADRs were implemented to ensure cars were built to a minimum standard. I dont believe mods that enhance a cars performance means that the standards are depreciated - but regency dont care, so much easier to just tell everyone to stock out the car. They will let you fit $50 K-mart brand shocks, but not $2k plus suspension - fair eh?
  2. Just a couple of points, As Dean has since pointed out, I was told by Tim Ireland, that even if it was engineered, and passed an emissions test, doesnt mean they will pass it. Seems like a total waste of the 5.5K it would cost (minimum) to get the car legal, esp when in other states emissions tests are free, or close to it. I have been told by Regency (Tim Ireland) that I cannot have a programmable ECU or a boost controller, not matter who engineers it - kinda leaves most import divers high and dry - spose it goes back to 'buy a falcon'. Mr Tim Ireland suggested I mod a car that predates ADRs, so I wouldnt have a problem - its ok to build up an old piece of crap, but not a modern car, and the most annoying of the lot - If I lived in Qld, I could fit a bigger turbo, without even having the car inspected, and have a Power FC, coilover suspension, infact just about what I want - and I dont even need an engineers cert or a full drive cycle test done - this state is a bloody joke, and yes, before you say, I do have every intention of leaving here. Its a joke that a car has to be dead stock to pass over regency, and even then they can get harrassed (unless its a full sick monaro) - this is the only state that has such anal retentive laws, and its a crying shame that no one in a position to have any throw is getting this looked at, wants to have anything to do with it. I am sure that even the readers of HPI, Zoom or Speed would love to see an accurate summary of what is legal in what state, and what is required to comply basic (and perhaps some not so basic) mods. This would be enough to assit in highlighting the debarcle that is Regency - with no legal ramifications as long as its totally factual. have you seen the approved person scheme in Qld? N/AR, I have only been defected once in my life, when I was a young lad and drove a monaro, it was moddified, and the inspector just said 'nice car' after he finnished looking at it and I was on my way - I dont get pissed off at all this bullshit because I feel I am being harrassed. I have pulled up at lights next to cops, given a casual look and that is about all. the reason I dont like the system is because as far as I can see is ITS WRONG. It annoys me that someone cant enjoy the pleasure of owning a nicely modded car, such as Deans, and then get pulled over, defected for no GOOD reason, then have to go through the dramas associated. If he drove in my old home state, he wouldnt be looked at unless he was driving like a dick, if the vehicle was defected, he could get permits for his mods - issued by the inspection station. But hey if you like the way things are, good for you, I dont, and its my right to protest.
  3. Now how many people out there would just happen to have a photo of black electrical tape handy????
  4. The plenum breather sucks out blow by at vacuum, the turbo line is for boost. I 'suppose' its better to have it go through the plenum, as it is less likely to coat the cooler, but if you have a catch can? Sorry I dont know for sure. I do remember old cars just had a vented/filter oil filler cap, but emissions laws require all crank case gasses to be burnt in the combustion chamber.
  5. If you have an R32, just get it remapped - cheaper than an SAFC. I know a guy who ran a fuel cut defender on an RB20 cefiro, ran 1.3bar, and in that trim it was driven hard for 2 years without a problem, so I have trouble believing what is being said about fuel cut defenders.
  6. Hmm, bit to techo for me, any chance you can post up a pic:p
  7. the PCV valve is on the rocker cover at the front on the plenum side. It has a rubber hose that goes from it to the plenum. I removes blow by from the crank case, but when under boost it should shut and the crank case gasses go into the intake for the turbo, after the AFM. I can see how it could possibly hurt the engine, as long as the gasses can escape elsewhere.
  8. For any interested, I just blocked my PCV valve, and now the idle has improved 1000%, when coming off revs, just hunts twice and then sits on set idle within 30rpm. I acutally plugged the PCV because I noticed it was leaking a little the wrong way:)
  9. Jim, I believe the timing is set at 660rpm for a stock R33. If your revs are jumping, try putting a screw in the PCV valve - it fixed mine (which I had been trying to sort for bloody months) and see if that helps. Otherwise, if you still have the stock ecu, plug it in, set timing and then plug in the Power fc. I am not 100% what the power fc will be reading, it gets its signal (AFAIK) off the CAS. If it is still in base (untuned) map, it should be fine. I drove for weeks on untuned power fc, and had good economy (around 10L/100km). Perhaps the power fc sees works on 15deg off the CAS and then adjusts up and down from there. Whenever I have had my car tuned they will always check the base timing. From there the Power fc can vary up or down as needed, so I suppose what it reports is only relative to where the CAS is set. If that makes sense?
  10. Base timing is set off the CAS. Power fc tells you where the ignition timing is set for a particular map cell, so as revs change, even slightly, the timing may change, depending on where it is set. Without being able to vary ignition timing, the power fc would be little more than a fancy SAFC.
  11. cos its farked
  12. And if your opinion represents HPI and SPEED, guess which mags can smoke me?
  13. Thats a bit of a cop out isnt it? This 'demographic' you talk of is the readers of the magazines. WE pay THEIR wages, our money goes in YOUR pocket, through continued support. Why the hell cant they try and do something posistive in response. If we were all indigineous people would everyone just turn their backs on us and say 'you belong to xxx demographic - bad luck. HPI and SPEED survive because people like to mod cars - why should people who like to mod cars be persecuted and singled out. Also, didnt you say you would take regency to task if it was found that James cerfiro got defected because it appeared in an article in HPI? What happened there? You advertise your illegal mods to the XR6 turbo you drive, page by page and step by step, as you did with your soarer. People read these magazines for inspiration and ideas on what mods to do, yet you can sit back and essentially say stiff shit, buy a falcon????? No, actually I am way out of line, I appologise - hey everybody, drive falcons and buy Streetmachine - fark this skyline/import crap.
  14. Freebaggin, how did you reinforce the ecu plug?
  15. Also some info in Road Traffic (miscellaneous) 1999 Regs, and Road Traffic (vehicle standards) Rules 1999 - both available via the above transport sa website. They cover their arses by saying all cars must comply with applicable ADRs - in effect any aftermarket or non original part 'could' be reason for a car to be defected or not passed through Regency, or, if the inpsector/cop believes the part may be non standard or defective. Like I said before, not a bloody hope, they have themselves covered in every possible way. I have even been told that there has never been a successful class action taken out against Regency or its inspectors, but that is only hearsay.
  16. Here is a link to current legislation http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/legislation...ation/index.asp - click on Road Traffic Act and you go to the current parliament legislation page, click on 'R' then scroll down to road traffic act Media - I think it would be a big rock show, where import owners would be painted as a pack of hoons and whingers. BOV - only stock is legal, as according to Tim Ireland (head of regency) anything else may alter the emissions and would therefore contradict emissions standards Suspension - different views depending on who you speak to. I was told 'we wont let you drive out of here with suspension you could lower below legal height within 5 minutes', even though the suspension is not illegal per se. Here it is assumed the individual will break the law, and the option of obeying the law has been removed. Bad luck if you wanted your car for the occasional track day. With the road traffic act, have a look at Part 4A - basically an inspector can not pass a vehicle whenever he likes (even if it has been engineered) if he feels it may not be roadworthy. He has no liability either if he is wrong Basically they can do what they want, nothing you can do about it. I suggest you ring up the modified vehicle department at regency, they can at least head you in the right direction, take a record of conversation, be polite, and at least you will have grounds to protest if you get screwed around. Also, if anything on your car is not standard, make sure you ask for a permit slip to be issued - once again Tim Ireland told me this is current practice at regency (yeah right) Also have a look at para 160, all about defects
  17. Sydneykid, runner length, as best I could measure is 450ish mm long (hard to measure), with a diameter of 35mm. Whilst this is alot longer than a street type manifold that the Japs make, where they blend the runners into each other, it also looks somewhat like a plate of spaghetti to maintain the length. I dont think the lenght of itself is the main cause, just a contributing factor as longer runners will make for a more gradual build on to boost. Where the runners go 6 into 1 they meet at an angle of about 50 odd degrees, but meet only about 30mm before the turbine flange - which is where I believe most of the problems are. This is very different from most jap designed stuff I have seen.
  18. Would I be correct if I assumed you had a aust made exhaust?
  19. Is that a transmission cooler?
  20. Thanks for that BIGBLOCK, some really good info there, and welcome to the forums (I notice this is your first post) even though you have been watching for a while:)
  21. Thanks again Warpspeed - its a shame you live on the east coast:)
  22. prices must have gone down a bit, I got quoted $700+GST from Nissan about a year ago.
  23. Every import/modded car owner get the car registered in Queensland At least Transport SA wouldnt be getting revenue from the cars it targes:p
  24. JimX, BOOSTD got a fair bit of midrange and over 13ish top end rwkw with one of these set to -4deg. He was using a power fc. Also, Rev210 got a good result using stock ecu with SAFC. Something dont seem right?
