Does it have to be a V8 ? , I'm hardly a Ford person but an XR6T engine may go in ok and at least spares are available . Sadly for Ford I think the current turbo six makes slightly more torque than their V8 though possibly not off idle . A factory turbo engine has most of the updates to make it live in a forced environment and the manifolds and dryer are obviously all there . Specific things like injectors cams pistons and maybe rods are usually more suitable than NA stuff . Getting the paperwork to run a local spec engine should be easy too . Cheers A .

I think most people decide that the extra weight and complexity of a WAIC is not worth it given that there are plenty of cheap air/air IC kits available . I've seen nice things done with a pipe kit and a stock GTR IC , throw in a GReady type inlet manifold and it solves a few more probs . A .

Hi there , we've been there (IRS conversion) in a Bluebird years ago but luckily for me my mentor (one of them) has been doing rally car fab work most of his adult life and used to run Road and Rally Center . I'm curious as to how you fitted the rear cross member mounting pins . In Aust Bluebirds (910's) the holes are there but that section is double skinned and the inner skin is not a through hole . What AJ did was to remove the hopeless 4 link body mounts and offer up the bare x member to chek mount hole alignment - mainly because we were fitting a DR30 R200 long nose rear end . R30's usually have the mount pins welded to strengthening plates inside the rear rails but to make ours fit I chopped the taper mount tubes out of 280ZX wrecks from Pick and Payless . I think the tapered pins were 1600 Datsun . Anyway as I'm sure you'd know the crade has to be very securely mounted to the shell . One really easy mod we did was to fill the air holes in the X member bushes up with Stikaflex , takes two days because a fair bit was used and a full day to let it set was needed each side . R30's have soft bushings and IRS R31's are even worse - particularly the "rear steer" ones . If I had the time I'd remove the pineapples from my R33 and stickaflex it too . Best of luck , cheers A .

Guilt-toy Now Running On E85 !

Matter of opinion I suppose but I would not be any rush to lose the hotwire AFM and I don't think the Haltech supports them . If the engine is tuned to run the clean mixtures at part throttle loads you should get good consumption anyway . Another thing to look into is best mean torque timing everywhere because thats going to help the engine make the most efficient use of it's air and fuel , probably something best done on a good chassis dyno . The general has been saying that they want to market a flex fuel VE Commode door that can run up to 85% ethanol - E85 . I remember someone (Martin Donnon ?) posting that the LS V8's already have flex fuel maps in their EMS's but they're not enabled on Aus spec ECU's . LS Edit may be able to unlock those but not I'm certain . Cheers A . -

I think the original ethanol scare started when a few early STi "owners" trashed their engines and Subaru replaced them no questions asked probably to save their reputation . My answer to that is were these engines in a non std state of tune and were they being thrashed to death - abused . No doubt you all remember the hue and cry over Toluene being blended in imported fuel until the tax differences were changed . The big oil companies have every reason to rubbish anything that threatens petrol dollars and if they can scare the uninformed they will . What I have tried to do is put up links to what is being achieved overseas and now here in Australia with normally aspired and forced induced engines . The Brazilian examples are good ones because you can always argue that if ethanol was an engine killer they'd all be walking wouldn't they ? From what I remember reading there is something from ethanol combustion that ends up in the lubricating oil but it's not like nothing from burning ULP/PULP ends up in the oil . The only real fix there is to change the oil and filter at the appropriate intervals . Personally I think a propper synthetic oil should be used in any half serious performance engine and particularly a turbocharged one . I'll get back on what some of the US boards have found with E85 and oil contamination . Cheers A . -
The std comp cover on a GT3582R is a 0.70 A/R T04S family housing , the one on the Ford XR6 type turbo is a 0.50 A/R T04E family housing . I agree - changing the housings on a brand new turbocharger may not be a cheap exercise and more expensive than just buying that turbo with suitable housings . Shop around and see what a complete unit to your liking costs . A .

Yes the emissions test should prove most interesting . Is there any particular level of anything that you think may put you over ? I reckon availability of E85 is going to depend on demand so the more people use it the more reason sites have to gear up for it . We as petrol (?) heads are small percentage of the buying public but that doesn't mean we can't get others interested . The general public is going to need convincing that there is a positive benefit in it for them and that it won't kill their engine . Because the ethanol content is ~ 85% engines tuned for ULP/PULP are going to have problems unless they have self learning type EMS's and have enough reserve capacity (injectors/pump) to make up the difference . I have seen ad's for "E85 conversion kits" and I imagine they change the injector pulse width enough to run E85 and not go too lean . They look like a black box with a loom that plugs in between the injectors and their factory plugs and the box has a single earth wire running back to the battery - interceptor . Obviously no ignition timing changes at this level . Guilt Toy I don't expect you to post your PFC settings but it may be a help to others here if someone could either talk about the differences in settings between PULP and E85 tunes or maybe even start a thred or sticky on tuning RB's on E85 . If there were a few generic maps floating around (all care taken but no ...) it may make it easier for people to try E85 without anything going bang - sort of like a base PFC map but for E85 . Cheers A . -

At the moment there probably isn't enough E85 around for the price to be indexed to ULP . In one of the links I posted it mentions that in some parts of North America there are govt bonuses being paid to servos who gear up tanks/pumps for E85 though its still a large capital outlay for each site . Going back a bit I was struggling to find standards info for handling E85 but I did post a link to some American info . Gary went looking for an MSTS and I don't think he found one . Anyhow great results and thanks for sharing . A . Found this . -

They machine and port the casting inhouse yes . They can supply and fit a range of valves/guides/springs . A . -
What I'd do if it was me . 1) Remove the turbo and split the housings off the cartridge . The compressor wheel's obviously had the Richard but the rest may be quite ok , need to check the turbine blades and the shaft to see if it's bent . If the damage is terminal but the housings are Ok it may well be fixed with a new cartridge . 2) Ask yourself if you were satisfied with the performance (not the dyno numbers) . The real GT3071R (CHRA No 700177-23) has nudged 440 Hp though that was with an appropriate twin scroll turbine housing on a ported and aftermarket cam'd SR20 in the US . My point is that that turbine and compressor combination is capable of significantly more than 320 Hp (240 Kw) but it likes the manifold and turbine housing to be non restrictive . Assuming you were using a Garrett GT30 turbine housing I'd be looking at the engine from air filter to exhaust tip for possible restrictions . All too often it's not the dryer thats the problem . A .

R33 Gtr Fuel Pump In R33 Gtst
discopotato03 replied to WET-25T's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
I didn't take pics at the time and don't quote me but I think the R33 GTR pump sits lower on the bracket than the 33GTS25T one does - did it a while ago . I know someone that fitted an R32GTR pump into an R33 GTS25T and it was a bit more fiddly to make work . If I was doing it again I'd def get the whole R33 GTR assembly and fit it to the std R33 GTS25T fueltank . Cheers A . -

The consensus seems to be that using E10 should not give any problems at all in fact many late model cars we pedal at work say E10 compliant or similar inside the fuel filler flap . I think replacing rubber fuel lines is a must if you don't want to have problems with slightly older vehicles . My finding is that not all E10 is the same and that the suff sold by the larger mobs feels like it's low octane rubbish . The juice my dinosaur Subie lives on is the ultra level E10 meaning supposedly 96 octane - will find out which type of servo it is later . I think it's possible to have a win in later cars with self learning computers , turbo cars often run rich anyway and the slight leaning should be a good thing . If detonation is down also a bonus . My Subaru (early 85 RX-T) is not that smart - it doesn't mind 96 E10 and my pocket def doesn't mind 10-15 cents less per liter than name brand 96 ULP . Cheers A . -

I found another interesting link , this one is a Mega Squirt supposedly capable of making on the fly adjustments to "Flex Fueled" cars meaning based on feedback from a sensor that can tell the ethanol content of the fuel . Wouldnt it be nice if that kind of thing could be done with a PFC . Cheers A . http://www.megamanual.com/flexfuel.htm -

Thanks for the offer but I really need my own Datalogit and with luck BMS may have one on its way soon . The KMON sounds really interesting but one thing at a time . I think one of the real problems with E85 or any high percentage alcohol blend is its ability to absorb water - mainly from the atmosphere in our cases . I've no idea how well sealed a Skylines fuel vapor system is but it's logical that the longer it sits in the fuel tank the greater the chance of the water content rising . This could be one area that manufacturers have to change things in order to make E85 compliant cars not act up . It would be a godsend for E85 users if some device could be fitted that separated water from the alcohol and petrol so its concentration never got out of hand . In the mean time you may want to use what E85 youve poured in within say a week so it's not there long enough to absorb too much water . I wouldn't be comfortable leaving it there for weeks on end because if it did a phase separation it could get ugly . Cheers A . -

What sort of air/fuel ratios are you running at the moment in light load/cruise mode ? Also have you advanced the ignition time as far as will does any good in these areas ? How were you driving the thing in those 50 km - just soft pedalling around or give it a few stabs to experiment ? Cheers A . PS forgot to add earlier , supply will depend on demand so the more it gets used the better the chance of the other servo mobs stocking it . Economies of scale may effect price too . -
Guilt-toy Now Running On E85 !
discopotato03 replied to Guilt-Toy's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Yes good to see someone locally having a go . In one of the threads I posted ages ago it was mentioned that fuel hose standards changed in I think 85 with the arrival of unleaded petrol . I recently changed the fuel hoses and pump in my dinosaur Subaru to be sure and they came out looking ok - if very old . This things been running E10 for months and a bit of E85 tossed in the hole to see what happened . I have no control of fueling in this sputnik and predictably the higher the ethanol ratio goes the more the mixtures leans out all else being equal . I can't get the Aust Datalogit agent to contact me and until I can buy a Datalogit it's pointless putting E85 in my R33 . Gary I've been meaning to ask you for ages about that alcohol/water strainer device you were telling me about a while back from the methanol days . Aside from a higher volume capable fuel system keeping water out of the fuel supply is probably the greatest drama . Guilt toy I hear that E85 can create cold start dramas in very cold conditions , I think in the US they increase the ratio of petrol in "E85" for the winter months . The tuning should prove very interesting , cheers A . -

I'm not really in agreeance with you there KiwiRS4T , there are several good reasons for running E85 and it's not about feeling all warm and gluey rubbing naked against trees . If tuned properly with E85 it will help make more power than 98 PULP , yes you have to use more of it but the cost is so much less than exotic race fuels . From a running cost viewpoint it's not the miles per gallon or liters per 100 km that's important , it's the dollars per 100 km at the end of the day . What virtually everyone ends up discovering is that the claimed 1/3 extra fuel required to run E85 is not a realistic figure in cruise and light load use . Because a fair bit of extra ignition timing can be used the mixtures can be leaned out (or not richened up as much depending on which way you look at it) you don't use as much . There is advantages in running a fuel than creates lower combustion temps - from what I read burning E85 you get lower peak cylinder pressure on the power strokes but a higher average cylinder pressure and I imagine this ties in with it being a less detonation prone fuel . So without having done it I have to agree that in WOT mode yes your going to have to spray in possibly 1/3 more fuel and that will mean doing something with injectors and maybe the fuel pump . When you can run best mean torque timing you can run more pocket friendly fuel flows in light load use , its the in damage control retarded ignition timing and some peoples desire to tip more fuel into the engine to attemp to control charge temps that sends the fuel usage rate skywards . I like Alec Guinesses (sp ?) quote , "A lot of the truthes we cling to depend on a point of view" . It's now up to the locals to prove what our petrol head brothers (and sisters) from overseas have done with E85 , I doubt those over there are telling pure porkies . Have a read in some of those links and don't forget that some of those people spend squillions on their cars , cheers A . -
