I've been hearing that the 2540 can only produce as much power as the 2530, but with more lag... unless boosting really high. Most of these conclusions have been made from using twin setups on GTRs.

I would like to know how a 2540R would go on an SR20DET, since the 2540 wont fit without modification. The 2540R is also suppost to make a bit more power than the 2540... and the only difference i can see is that it has a 0.50 a/r compressor housing compared with the 0.60 a/r of the 2540.

What advantages/disadvantages would i see with the 2540R, compared with the 2530... i'd actually prefer the GT-RS, although they are very hard to find second hand.

Also... what about the 2835 with internal wastegate... would it be worth going to next step, or would it be advisable to go for the external gate model?

2540R is exactly the same as the 2540... the only difference is the 0.50 a/r compressor housing compared with the 0.60 a/r housing of the 2540. the other difference is the option of a 0.86 a/r turbine housing over the standard 0.64 a/r.

i would like to know how the smaller compressor housing a/r would effect things like response and power output.

Hi RHiSC, The difficulty I personally have with the HKS turbos is that they are almost twice as expensive as the Garret they are based on. For example I recently set up an S14 SR20 on the circuit with a GT28BB and it definitely had all of its claimed 380 BHP. And it spooled up at 3,750 rpm and had good throttle response. The turbo cost $2,750 brand new from GCG, in comparison the HKS2540 would be $4,790 brand new. Simply put, in my opinion they are not worth the $2,040 extra.

My philosophy is that I like to run as low a boost as I can, as long as I can get the required airflow to make the horsepower target. The HKS modifications to the Garret design are aimed at making them more efficient at high boost, over 2 bar in some cases. This is the wrong way round for me, I would want them to do mods so that they produce more airflow at lower boost.

With a Garrett I can get a compressor flow map and work out exactly what you are finding very difficult to find for HKS, because they don't publish them.

Hope that helps.

yeah thanks for that input... although i still think i would prefer a second hand HKS 2530 or 2540R for less than $1700

do you know of any places where i could find second hand Garret turbos, like the GT28BB? i thought this only was meant to produce around 320hp

i would also like an explanation to how the 2540R is meant to make more power than the 2540, when it has a smaller compressor a/r... would the smaller a/r of the 2540R have any effect on throttle response?
