Like I said before, just get a Jap cooler. If you get a JJ cooler you will always look at it and wish it was a Jap one.

Haha cause your from Tassie, ill let that comment slide :) Ill get a JJ FMIC and spray BLITZ on the front and ill bet you wont even know the difference! Performance wise, the difference is almost nil... its just like saying Nike shoes will make you run faster then Dunlop's lol

Nike "may" arguably be better quality then Dunlop, but at the end they will both do the EXACT same job and will last the same distance... but marketing will determine the price of the product... Same senario with the FMIC kits...

I live in Perth WA, so ARE is further away than you are. The service they give is great in the experiences I have with them.

It's quite easy to pick up the phone and have a chat to them. What you might like to do is work out your average horsepower requirement or goal. .The average or sweetspot of airflow can then be determined around which you then size and design the intercooler to return peak efficiency at around this point.

As an example I upgraded the standard GTR intercooler for an ARE that matched my required average power and the difference was night and day. Particularly in the low & mid range and very noticable in lower gears in off boost or vacume. The factory GTR cores are not shabby at all, certainly better than a china core of the same size and type.

One example I can think of recently was an SR20 powered race car going from a Hybrid intercooler to a custom built ARE based on recommendation. It picked up 30rwhp extra. The intercooler core was slightly smaller than the original from memory.The most important area of improvement was over the whole power band.

For a street car that doesn't drive around non stop at full throttle and maximum boost, you need to be aware of the light throttle and cruise downsides if the intercooler is very large. It also will dull response to boost in lower gears where there isn't the sort of load to produce boost.

Consider a bolt in R34 intercooler as a stepping stone while you still have the stock turbo, they are hard to beat and easy to on-sell once you do upgrade. I think spending a few days in the shed with the turbo, injectors, intercooler etc. all being bolted on at the same time will save a fair bit on tuning costs and leave you with tad more dollars to buy quality gear.

    • Wrong question. There's no point in spending the rather large sum of cash and effort to add turbo, without taking it to the "sensible" limit of the motor itself. If you have to upgrade injectors, etc, then so be it. That is a tiny fraction of what it will cost you to turbo it.
    • Measure voltage at the starter solenoid terminal when the key is at start and it has clicked. If it is really low, then the suspicion falls on the ignition switch (contacts or wiring thereof) as causing a voltage drop instead of sending enough volts to throw the solenoid all the way to engage the starter itself. If it is a decent voltage, then the suspicion is on the solenoid. Might have s horted coil, or might hva dirty contacts. Rip the starter off, dismantle, clean up contacts and inspect winding. It might not be possible to see if there is a short in the winding though. I have a spare starter here that I could measure the resistance of the coil, as a guide to about what it should be, if you need a comparison. <parts hoarder>No you cannot have it.</parts hoarder>

    • Absolutely matters because, while a temperature change will eventually reach a sensor at the end of a static line, the response time is far far far too slow to be useful. Might as well not have a temp gauge at all.
    • When I was eyeing off the 370GT (after deciding I didn't want to spend 30-40k+ to relive my early 20s in an R33) I thought it'd be a good project to add a turbo to it. Now that I have a 370GT, and I've had a couple of chances to open it up, I'm pretty stunned by how much power it makes 🫠 Honestly, the way the VVEL opens it up, it almost feels like there's a little turbo tucked away in there somewhere. It's like Nissan looked at VTEC and said "hold my beer" 😁 Has anyone thrown a turbo into their 370Z or 370GT? Is there a conservative boost level you can run without having to upgrade the fuel system, or are bigger injectors and a bigger pump a given?
