There is a large thread that covers everything for the RB30 build.

If you use standard non turbo RB30E Pistons and bolt a RB25DE/T head on it will drop compression to around 8.2:1.

If you want a compression of around 9:1 you will have to go for custom pistons.

The standard RB30E Rods are extremly tough. Shotpeened & cleaned up etc.. will see them through to 300-350rwkw.

The RB30E Bottom end is 30mm higher than all of the other RB20/25/26 Blocks. So you cannot use RB30E rods in a RB20/25/26 block.

If you were to use RB25 Pistons you would acheive an extremly low compression ratio of around 7:1

Hey Sumo,

That's a great thread, read it again, I'm sure you'll learn a few extra things the second time round (I did).

Anyways... there is a PDF file posted in that thread which specifically outlines how to get VVT working.

I can't remember 100% but something like you use the oil feed from the block to operate the solenoid for the VVT in the head.

Check the thread again and look for the PDF.

SXtacy i believe that your were going to drop a RB26/30 hybrid in a silvia, did you do it? how where the Twin turbo exhaust dump and downpipes? also i cant find that pdf what is the name of it?

and did JNR24 ever post his RB30 engine swap guide thing?

Regarding my engine... it won't be completed anytime soon (like maybe at the end of the year). I was doing the project as a sideline because my main project is my S15 which has a HKS 3037 and full engine rebuild and a host of other goodies that I'm trying to finish :)

With the RB30/26, I was going to drop it into something crazy like an S13 or I may lose the plot and put it into my S15... now that would be different :D

RB30E Pistons in AUS are from Nissan $720AUS.

Big End and Main Genuine Nissan Bearings are $250AUS.

I was going to used Forged ARIAS Pistons ($1600AUS) then decided against as I was chasing 300rwkw (402rwhp) which would require so much more outlay not just pistons (i.e external wastegates, Big injectors, more money cleaning up rods etc) For 260rwkw (348rwhp) I can get a reliable RB30DET that is making full boost by 3000rpm and pulling to 7000rpm. If you want 300rwkw you need to spend money basically.. :) For mid 250's (335rwhp) you can get away with a stock bottom end.

Mathoon is making 320rwkw (428rwhp) and is still using the standard Nissan bearings. He didn't go with the Nismo ones. It really depends on what the car is going to be used for. For a street weapon I would stick with the Nissan Bearings unless you don't mind spending a little more for the Nismo Bearings.

With the 4.33:1 Ratio diff the R32 runs the RB30DET should feel really pokey even off boost and due to the 7000rpm rev's I will still be able to clock 250km/h..

I slapped the rear wheel horsepower conversions in for the US blokes :D

Why not make it truly universal and talk about power at the engine. The US fellas will be using different dyno's to us, so talking about rw power is even less relevant than it is among ppl using the same make dyno. If I remember right, their dyno's would read higher for the same power as us. So 300rwkw to them is equivalent to 250rwkw to us (for example).

Its something that really irks me. What's 300rwkw anyway? I can ride a pushbike on a dyno and get that number with enough operator fudging.

Don't mean to single you out Joel, been meaning to say this for a while. Power at the eninge. Its the only goal to set.

(Really, whats your goal (300rwkw) at the engine?).

Power at the engine is the only goal to set, but realistically it isn't pratical. Generally all of AUS's dyno's are pretty close in readings.

I am aware that a rolling road can be fudged but the point is why as when listing mods it will be obvious they are fudged.

My R32 GTS-T on the Dyno Dynamics when it was dead stock made 115rwkw on another Dyno Dynamics at D&T Performance exhaust made 113rwkw on a 34degree day. They are damn close.

I am aiming for around 350kw at the engine which with 30% drivetrain loss average equals out to around 250rwkw.

At the end of the day it is only a guide. Some thing to go by and compare roughly, however the readings should be looked at critically and not taken as gospel.. hrmmm maybe thats a bad example as I don't belive shiet thats in the gospel. :)

Depends on your definition of close, I guess :P. Theres a dyno in Perth that puts out hugely inflated figures (telling me I have enough power to run 11s), and every state will have one of those. Even if the dyno's do put out similiar numbers, theres things like auto or manaul, temp, gear ratio and the operator themselves that change can power output and driveline loss %. Its a fuzzy figure and a real pita to add 30% to get a guestimate flywheel figure everytime.

Its not practical to measure power at the engine, buts that not say its a useless figure. How else do you select a turbo? Or set a power figure to have your head flowed to? Rear wheel power figures don't mean much in real terms.

93RPS13.. I looked in to ceramic coating pistons etc and apparently it increases the chance of detonation however it does reduce engine temperatures slightly and obviously spool turbo's etc earlier as the exhaust gas is hotter and we all know hotter means faster velocity hence turbo spool. This is why some tuners slightly run the car leaner when not on boost as to increase the exhaust gas temp to spool the turbo's slightly quicker.

Hey kwazza11, mate I don't mean to argue (coz I'm new to this forum) but the idea of such a forum is so people can openly ask questions and learn a little from those who know.

We were all at a point where we didn't know what a gallery was...

However, having said that, yes, if you don't know what an oil gallery is, please don't try to do the conversion yourself as there is a steep learning curve you still have.

But ask as many questions you want, that's what this forum's here for - discussion :)

    • Who did you have do the installation? I actually know someone who is VERY familiar with the AVS gear. The main point of contact though would be your installer.   Where are you based in NZ?
    • Look, realistically, those are some fairly chunky connectors and wires so it is a reasonably fair bet that that loom was involved in the redirection of the fuel pump and/or ECU/ignition power for the immobiliser. It's also fair to be that the new immobiliser is essentially the same thing as the old one, and so it probably needs the same stuff done to make it do what it has to do. Given that you are talking about a car that no-one else here is familiar with (I mean your exact car) and an alarm that I've never heard of before and so probably not many others are familiar with, and that some wire monkey has been messing with it out of our sight, it seems reasonable that the wire monkey should be fixing this.
    • Wheel alignment immediately. Not "when I get around to it". And further to what Duncan said - you cannot just put camber arms on and shorten them. You will introduce bump steer far in excess of what the car had with stock arms. You need adjustable tension arms and they need to be shortened also. The simplest approach is to shorten them the same % as the stock ones. This will not be correct or optimal, but it will be better than any other guess. The correct way to set the lengths of both arms is to use a properly built/set up bump steer gauge and trial and error the adjustments until you hit the camber you need and want and have minimum bump steer in the range of motion that the wheel is expected to travel. And what Duncan said about toe is also very true. And you cannot change the camber arm without also affecting toe. So when you have adjustable arms on the back of a Skyline, the car either needs to go to a talented wheel aligner (not your local tyre shop dropout), or you need to be able to do this stuff yourself at home. Guess which approach I have taken? I have built my own gear for camber, toe and bump steer measurement and I do all this on the flattest bit of concrete I have, with some shims under the tyres on one side to level the car.
    • Thought I would get some advice from others on this situation.    Relevant info: R33 GTS25t Link G4x ECU Walbro 255LPH w/ OEM FP Relay (No relay mod) Scenario: I accidentally messed up my old AVS S5 (rev.1) at the start of the year and the cars been immobilised. Also the siren BBU has completely failed; so I decided to upgrade it.  I got a newer AVS S5 (rev.2?) installed on Friday. The guy removed the old one and its immobilisers. Tried to start it; the car cranks but doesnt start.  The new one was installed and all the alarm functions seem to be working as they should; still wouldn't start Went to bed; got up on Friday morning and decided to have a look into the no start problem. Found the car completely dead.  Charged the battery; plugged it back in and found the brake lights were stuck on.  Unplugging the brake pedal switch the lights turn off. Plug it back in and theyre stuck on again. I tested the switch (continuity test and resistance); all looks good (0-1kohm).  On talking to AVS; found its because of the rubber stopper on the brake pedal; sure enough the middle of it is missing so have ordered a new one. One of those wear items; which was confusing what was going on However when I try unplugging the STOP Light fuses (under the dash and under the hood) the brake light still stays on. Should those fuses not cut the brake light circuit?  I then checked the ECU; FP Speed Error.  Testing the pump again; I can hear the relay clicking every time I switch it to ON. I unplugged the pump and put the multimeter across the plug. No continuity; im seeing 0.6V (ECU signal?) and when it switches the relay I think its like 20mA or 200mA). Not seeing 12.4V / 7-9A. As far as I know; the Fuel Pump was wired through one of the immobiliser relays on the old alarm.  He pulled some thick gauged harness out with the old alarm wiring; which looks to me like it was to bridge connections into the immobilisers? Before it got immobilised it was running just fine.  Im at a loss to why the FP is getting no voltage; I thought maybe the FP was faulty (even though I havent even done 50km on the new pump) but no voltage at the harness plug.  Questions: Could it be he didnt reconnect the fuel pump when testing it after the old alarm removal (before installing the new alarm)?  Is this a case of bridging to the brake lights instead of the fuel pump circuit? It's a bit beyond me as I dont do a lot with electrical; so have tried my best to diagnose what I think seems to make sense.  Seeking advice if theres for sure an issue with the alarm install to get him back here; or if I do infact, need an auto electrician to diagnose it. 
    • Then, shorten them by 1cm, drop the car back down and have a visual look (or even better, use a spirit level across the wheel to see if you have less camber than before. You still want something like 1.5 for road use. Alternatively, if you have adjustable rear ride height (I assume you do if you have extreme camber wear), raise the suspension back to standard height until you can get it all aligned properly. Finally, keep in mind that wear on the inside of the tyre can be for incorrect toe, not just camber
