Hks Evc Iv (in The Usa) Or Iii In Japan - Do You Use Learning Mode? What Does Offset Mean?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My car came with a HKS IV (in American terms) I found the manual here:

http://www.hksusa.com/faq/?ID=1647

And my offset appears to be set to "86" when the setting is "Low".

I still don't understand what this means, does this mean that because the boost controller has not been through learning mode it overestimates boost a little and the offset corrects this?

Also, the "low" is set to 0.85, which is the stock boost?

And the "high" is set to 1.0, which I assume is 1 bar of boost at maximum.

What does the offset mean?

And do you use the learning mode?

Obviously I can't use learning mode until I get to a drag strip or similar, 2K RPM in 3rd gear to redline????

Also, if the battery is disconnected, does the boost controller store its settings in memory of some kind?

I *assume* it would but I'm not 100% sure.

Regards,

Gareth

P.S. no idea what turbo's I am running! I *assume* they're not completely stock but I don't know how to ID them.

i have the EVC III and i have set it up from scratch

yes the learning mode is abosolutely essential for stable boost control, if you havent dont this or dont think its been done then you should do it

it clears all the previous settings and learns your actuator step up rate so its handy to do

offset or probably duty usually refers to a open:closed rate in a ratio format - i think anyway

stock boost would depend on the car & actuator setup , i think for GTR it would be 12psi so around 0.80 bar

He's done a lot of modifications to the car and he likely has had it "learn" correctly. However the manual said something about the offset been 100 after it has been through learning mode, so maybe it was changed after that.

And the car's battery was dead for a few weeks, do the settings get stored somewhere so they don't rely on power? (Just been paranoid, I know it should :P).

Oops, 100 is the default setting, its probably been adjusted from there for low offset

I was just feeling a bit paranoid because I accidentally turned the dial on the controller without knowing what it would do.

If anyone is looking for the links to the manual look at the first post for the HKS USA manual's.

from memory the offset number you are talking about is only visible if the EVC is in manual mode

if the learn has been done properly and you arent in manual mode you cant see the duty

if i go into mode on mine i can set boost, boost warning, and boost scramable setting & duration

i cant see offset on mine, but i do recall seeing that when i skipped auto mode and went into manual mode

from memory to go between the modes you hold down mode for 5 seconds i think

and it cycles between EVC or manual mode check the III manual

its on my website paulr33.skylinesaustralia.com

Had a look and found the EVC 4 manual, or Japanese EVC 3.

Its the same manual on the HKS website so I think I've seen all the documentation available.

I checked through the various links on your website but didn't find it...

    • I'd ask the shop what they used and use that. Mixing coolants is sometimes OK, sometimes not, and you have know the details of each coolant to know whether it's a good idea or not.
    • Is it alright to top up with just another green coolant?

Thanks for the advice on the box... i like a 6 speed so might be on the lookout or the box now.. a topic of discussion for another post...
    • Will have a look at that. I cant see any leaks
    • Put another overflow bottle (ie, a 1.25 coke bottle or similar) under the overflow hose and see if it is being pushed out there or if it is disappearing into the engine.
