HI Guys sorry but i couldnt find any info through the search function regarding this topic.

But i will be getting my 03 V35 within the next 2 weeks or so, it is arriving from Brissy. Now i have to take the car over the pits to get it on the road.

I just want to know what sort of costs are going to be involved. Sorry guys but i have not imported a vehicle before.

I know that normal we have a vehicle transfer form and we pay stap duty on the purchase price of the car. However how do i go about showing them the cost of my car in order to get the price of the stamp duty.

Thanks in advance guys.

:-)

If the car has Australian compliance you are not importing it. Is it currently registered in Qld?

If so you are just doing a transfer. The transfer papers ask for what you paid AND what the market value of the vehicle is.

For Market Value put down what you paid for it unless you got it at a rediculously unbelievable price.

In which case go here: http://www.redbook.com.au/

Hey sorry a bit of confusion. yeah the car was a import and because of some shipping issues the car had to go to Brissy for compliance. and then it is now being shipped to Perth. Now i want to know how they calculate the stamp duty amount. Is it on the FOB price or on the total cost which includes shipping and compliance as well?

And thanks for your help so far

Cool no probs. It doesn't matter what you paid for it, + shipping and compliance. On the transfer papers there is a box for what you paid and one for market value. You pay stamp duty on the market value. That can be obtained from Redbook or a signed individual appraisal from a valuer.

This will help you calc duty to be paid: http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/licensing/yourvehicle/1382.asp

A mate and I imported V35s at the same time. When he got his licensed the dpi person said to just add up FOB price + customs + compliance and to disregard shipping. When I licenced mine, I put my market value as my total costs minus Brissie - Perth freight and broker's fee and the person behind the desk challenged my declared market value and printed out a Redbook valuation (which at the time was significantly over inflated). She called her boss over, he said if I've declared it they have to accept my declaration and if they choose to review it at a later date I'd get a letter. That was 4 months ago so I think I'm safe. I didn't try to scam anyone, I just put down my total costs assuming that anyone could import the equivalent for the same price.

So my advice is to put your landed and complied price as your market value and take your receipts as proof.

You need to make sure the car is 100% standard with new Cat's, tyres and so on fitted as quite a few cars complied in QLD have been getting knocked back at the pits for things they know are to be done as part of compliance, a quick search will show the posts on the subject.

People were picked up for JDM tyres still fitted, after market wheels, suspension, no tyre placard and the list goes on, they are being targeted so make sure it is as per the book unless you are feeling lucky but after the ACCC incident they are very strict.

Stamp Duty will be on the market value not what it cost you, not to long ago people were getting away with what it owed them but DPI picked up on it.

What was the "shipping issue" that would cause the car to be complied in QLD?.

Hey sorry guys dont have internet at home so i have to wait till i get into work. Well i guess ill only find out when my car gets here as to the work they have done over there. But i know i paid for new tyres so that should be one less thing to worry about. I guess ill just take my receipts down as well as a market value estimate from Redbook and which ever i get ill have to deal with.

I think the issue was that the port that my car was at could not ship to Perth or there was going to be a very long delay till it would leave. And if i wanted it to be shipped to Perth then i would have to pay for relocating the car. So thats why it went to Brissy(i think).

But i am new to the importing scene and im not too sure as to how things operate so everyday is a learning curve.

Thanks again for all your help.

Cheers

    • I'm normally copping my own abuse from neglecting my daily drivers. "Those suspension bushes will last a bit more", "Don't worry about the oil leak, just keep topping it up". The project cars I'm always doing things slowly on them as I'm wanting them to be done better, and neater, and nicer. Luckily I don't have to deal with 18 year old Matt's "Learning to wire" stuff in the project cars. And there's only one piece of wiring I'm displeased about in the Landcruiser, and it's about to be cut out... However, the box loads of parts that have been going through this place lately for the Landcruiser... Brake pads Brake Rotors Full handbrake overhaul Wheel Bearings Seals Swivel hubs Steering Boxes Half the suspension joints Shocks Air bags (Ones to go in the rear springs for towing) Water pump Timing kit Lower timing case Harmonic Balancer Radiator Lots of other little seals and shits Gas struts for the bonnet New power window switches And god knows what else I've forgotten... Ha ha ha I have my fingers crossed the pinion seals don't start leaking on the diffs, that the transfer case doesn't leak, and the gearbox input shaft doesn't leak, nor the rear main seal. As they're about the only seals I haven't replaced in the driveline! I'm seriously eyeing off buying new caliper rebuild kits front and rear brake calipers... I'll probably recheck all the valve clearances soon too, and hopefully, it should be all good and sweet to haul some long distance trips again!
    • Every time I pull my 3x gauges out of the console and see the crack-addict way that I did the wiring, and I just can't bring myself to tear it all apart and "make it nice", because it is currently working. In fact, the last time I was in there I probably made it worse.
    • The best part is when you own the car long enough that you look back and find your OWN ham fisted amateur shit!
    • The annoying part about neglect, is when you start to replace one thing, and find ten more broken things. Ham fisted monkey repairs you normally only find out about when trying to do something unrelated! Ha ha   Neglect you can kind of anticipate the huge costs to fix it all. Ham fistedness is normally a shock the first time your work on a new old car, as everything "looked" good before.
