sloutch
Hi guys, Here's the story in short. Normally on my PC, i click on my user name and then enter a password to gain access to windows. That happens after the WINDOWS Loading screen. Now, 1) My PC crashed. 2) I removed the hard disk from the PC and bought a casing for the hard drive so i can transfer the data over to a new computer 3) I have files stored on the DESKTOP of the old PC. I can't access these files from the new PC because it says Access Denied. 4) Is there anyway for me to retrieve the files on the DESKTOP of my old PC? Which directory are they saved under? Thanks guys! Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/271798-computer-gurus-please-help/ Share on other sites
Deano45
What version of Windows are you running? Basically what you need to do is take ownership of the folder, then give yourself full rights to it. In a nutshell, Normally you right click on the folder, go to the properties of it, go to the security tab, click on the advanced button, go to the owner tab, add your new account as the owner (it may give you a warning about replacing the ownership), once this is done, close the windows and go back to the security tab, add yourself to the list and give it full control. You should now have access to the folder. Edit: Desktop folder is located in your profile folder under c:\documents and settings This is based on Windows XP but should be similar in Vista. I'm running windows XP pro. The thing is, i can't access Windows via the hard drive, i can only access the files inside the hard drive. I understand about giving rights and all, but i can only do this if i can access to the Admin's Control Panel right? Which requires me to log onto the Windows in the old hard drive. HtwCHACtkh
Okay let me do a quick situation analysis: So you've got your OLD HDD with your screwed up Windows XP on it in a caddy that you can plug into another computer and you wish to get the files off the OLD HDD but it's telling you access is denied in certain folders, is that right? Solution: If so, you can take ownership of the folders on the OLD HDD as long as you're an Administrator on the other computer on which the HDD is plugged into. What do you mean by your "PC Crashed" ? It might be an easily fixable software error. If you need more help feel free to ask here.
