Hi,

I need new pads in the front of my r33, and possibly disks machines. Car has 120,000kms on it, recon it might need new disks?

Anyways where would be the best (cheapest) place to get this done? Does anyone do this out of business hours for cash? I dont know any private mechanics or anyone in canberra really so any help would be great.

Regards

PK

This is a half bump and half asking another question.

What brake pads do you guys use and where do you get them?

I'm sick of using Bendix ultimates with the amount of brake dust and was hoping to try for a set of QFM A1RMs, but after ringing the ACT distributor, ACT brakes, they said it would be a 6-8 week wait. I don't really want to wait that long.

cheers

Lucas pads from Molongolo Brake and Clutch - Never had or heard of an issue, however, only had street use of these pads, fade is unknown on the track for me.

PK, can't remember the exact amount of mm a brake rotor has to be before it can no longer be machined, but the brake shop will tell you if they are too thin to be machined. Have you got a decent lip on the outer edge and inner edge of the brake rotor? I've just clocked up 100k on my R33 and the brakes are still looking perfect (although the current pads are unknown brand which probably explains the lack of stopping).

lol thanks for the replies, yeah he said that they start off at 38 or something and can only loose 2mm. Iwas wondering would 2mm occur over 125,000 kms?

there is a small lip not sure if it would be 2mm though. 300 bucks to machine and change pads i thought was a bit expensive.

$300 - $400 should get you 4 new rotors.. I picked up a set of RDA slotted rotors a year ago from Repco for $100ea.

I'm sure it was something like down to 21mm still legal... losing 2mm, that'd happen easily over 125,000km surely.

There was a group buy for rotors happening on here recently wasn't there? It may have been closed down by one of the moderators for no end date though..

Just have a look at the prices of new vs machining first, then decide if the extra $100 on new rotors would be better or not for your car.

I can machine rotors at work $22 per rotor to (machine them) ... and we can also supply QFM brake pads ...

$88 to machine all 4 provided you bring me the rotors and they are still within spec

Wow, thats nearly half the price I usually get them done. How would you rate the QFM pads??

Cool, do you have any QFM A1RMs in stock for R32-GTR, non bembo? any if so contact details.

cheers Michael

oh ok nice, where abouts is this at? do you open on saturdays? Do you know what specs are for a r33 gtst and whether 125,000kms would still be alright?

I work at Rusden Motors in fyshwick ...

22 Lyell st

The reason I would do them so cheap is I'd do them on a Saturday... if you bring me the discs to machine ... That way the boss doesn't put his % on top of the machining costs as I will say I am machining my own rotors ...

We normally only carry regular QFM pads in stock as they move alot faster than specialized racing pads ... I can ask my boss if he can get those pads in for you if you'd like QFM A1RM

Front pads are DB1170 and rears are DB1220

Yo,

Well disc's did need maching so got that done ($36) a disc. Also bleed the brakes, ultima pads still have more then half life left so they are back in for now! Thanks everyone, never changed pads or disc or bleed brakes before but ended up getting there in the end :(

good to hear ...

As for the QFM AMR1 pads ... I just checked with my boss and we should be able to get them in ... but they will be a special order so will need to know sizes in advance

hey thanks for your efforts. do you know how long it would take to order a set for r32 gtr, non bembo? should be same as 200sx.

I might be going to sydney next weekend anyway and try to pick up a set if it's longer that that.

thanks for enquiring for me.

    • Harness is for a s1 Rb25det, and it is engine and lower harness.  the old harness had broken off plugs and was in very rough condition/exposed wires and splices etc. it is not able to be put back on the car, I could visually inspect to see if they had rewired any pins on the ecu plug. The fuel pump definitly isn’t turning off it’s an external pump and very loud you can hear it. Will look at the other harness tonight, am also going to pull the fuel rail and watch the injectors spray, will update here with what I find. Pretty sure at this point it has to be something to do with injectors because car will fire up on starting fluid and cas is clicking the Injectors. Fuel pressure is steady 43psi
    • Check the injectors flow evenly, and are actually flowing what you and the ECU think they should be flowing. If it's starting up on starter fluid, you have a fuel issue. Is it possible under cranking your fuel pump is turning off?   The harness you replaced, is that the whole engine harness? Do yourself a test, and drop the old harness on and plug it into the Z32 ECU. It's possible they've wired things different. From memory S1 to S2 is different in RB25 and you may have a wrong loom
    • I haven’t pulled the injectors to watch them spray yet but they are clicking from the cas and all of the spark plugs are wet with fuel. I’ve thought the cylinders were being flooded from the beginning and was hoping fuel pressure would fix it. Tonight I am going to pull the rail and watch the injectors spray. Don’t know how to test/diagnose if the plugs are firing in correct sequence but that should be a timing thing and as far as timing goes my car still has the half moon for the cas can only install it 1 way. And my mechanical timing is 100% correct I posted photos above. Confirmed with the balancer on and off.
    • I checked spark on all cylinders and they all visually have spark with the plug pulled and grounded, but plug 1 is the only one that fouled. This was a running swap that blew up and was rebuilt by a machine shop, put a new wiring specialties harness and did all gaskets, studs, and bolts while it was out.  compression is 135-150 across all cylinders. Aside from that from my understanding with the z32 ecu and maf the car should start regardless. The wiring for TPS and the dual 02 sensor/ dual knock sensor stuff shouldn’t actually stop the car from starting or even running well, (just slightly rich)  they just give fault codes. Car supposedly is supposed to start as long as you have z32 afm and ecu with the nistune base map and that’s info coming from a well known and trusted tuner who does a lot with SR/RB (Rsenthalpy). After more trouble shooting today where I’m at right now is that the cas is sending signal to the injectors they click while spinning the rotor, Fuel pressure is now set at 43psi, all cylinders have good compression and all of the plugs looked great (just wet with fuel) except for cylinder 1 which was very black (cylinder 1 has 150psi compression). all of the coils generate spark if pulled out and grounded out on the head. On the fuel pump car just pops into the exhaust. On starting fluid car will fire off. Hard to tell if all cylinders are firing off but definitley a couple. sounds like all of them but it’s only for 3-5 seconds hard to tell.
