hey guys, i have an rb30 turbo in my r31 wagon and was looking to upgrade the turbo- which would be the best for this motor ( its standard expect for fmic, pod, boost controller etc) have an rb20 red top turbo on it at the moment, but looking for something a bit bigger and not to expensive!

and what do u reconmend that i do to the car next (what mods)

cheers

gotta go the forward facing plenum and injectors!

i have a 25/30 and a garret TO4B which will do 20psi no probs but i find its too laggy for my liking, i dont see full boost till 3500-4000rpm and the 30 bottom shouldn't really be revved more than 7000rpm which doesnt give you allot of time in 1st and 2nd gear.. so a drag off the lights is a little embarrassing if its not too far to the next set of lights..

In terms of cheap turbos, your going to find most will crap themselves first time you use them and shatter into your motor, so if you see a turbo sub 700-800 I would say dont touch (except for stock ones etc)

The best bang for buck turbos around here that are reliable are hypergears. Im sure Stao will be in here soon enough and give some recommendations.

Before you just look at upgrading the power mods ie. turbo, for your car to run correctly you HAVE to upgrade the supporting mods, which are things like:

larger injectors to flow more fuel into your motor to cope with the larger amount of air being pushed in by a larger turbo (so the air fuel ratio can stay on par)

ECU - the cars computer, to customize the maps of air fuel ratio, you will never get the most out of your car without one

Air flow meter- Im assuming the old 31's have one, if they do, it will probably also need an upgrade as it measures the amount of air being pushed into the motor.

Fuel pump - if you dont want your car to explode because there is not enough fuel in it then you have to have one, some tuners wont tune without a decent one.

THEN you can worry about the forward facing plenum etc... but for now thats just wanky... its not a necessity in your case.

get the above mods first and a decent turbo and you wont believe how much faster your car is. if you dont get the above mods, you might be able to squeeze 200-230rwkw from your current setup with a small highflowed standard turbo, which cost roughly 1100-1300ish to do, but seeing as you have the larger capacity motor, you can go a larger turbo without too much lag and have alot of power with it. The only problem is cash... you would probably be looking at about 2000-3000 to get the above then another 1200-2500 for a turbo, so there goes your cheap upgrade.

    • It might be worth having a good look at the chassis behind the bumper then; most people prefer the series 2 look so it might have been changed to cheaper parts as part of an earlier repair
    • The car itself a series 2. I was just curious about the headlights and just wanted to confirm that they were series 1. Good to know the rest of the front end is series 1. It’ll be easier for me to find parts on the aftermarket side of things lol
    • If you've wired up the coils & injectors properly, & have the neo CAS loom for the trigger, it should all work. The VCT works the same way so just different plugs between s1 & neo. Assuming DBW if no IAC. Don't bother with the stock boost solenoid with g4x.
    • THERE IS NO IAT SENSOR ON ANY SINGLE TURBO RB. And the one on an RB26 is not for "engine control" - it's really too big and too slow and is only used for over-temp alarming (as far as I can tell). Anyway, you don't have one. You want/need one for the Link, then you need to buy one, find a spot for it, and wire it in. You do know that the stock boost solenoid is not capable of "control", right? It is merely on or off, for the low boost (5 psi) and high boost (7psi), which the ECU enforces mostly based on gear. The stock solenoid is not for PWM control and is not plumbed up in a way to provide it. If you want to control boost properly, then you need a proper MAC valve. And yes, you can wire either of them direct to the ECU. Well, I assume you can - I don't know what the boost solenoid pins on the plug and play Link are capable of. They really should be as capable as any normal Link - but seeing as it is plg and play, it might be limited to stock functionality. Read the doco.   You really do just want to plug stuff together without understanding how it works, right? I can't help you there. I don't know the plug types or pinning on half the stuff you're asking about. If I had to do it I would sit down with the wiring diagrams, the car/looms and a multimeter and work out what is what.
