AU: Foxtel and Xbox 360 Partner Up, Get Pay-TV on your Xbox 360 in Australia

Australia, May 19, 2010

by IGN Staff

Off the back of Sony's recently announced direct-download movie service in Australia, Microsoft Australia has just hit back with a new announcement of its own. Coming in late 2010, Xbox 360 owners will be able to use their consoles as a set-top box to access Foxtel Pay TV services in Australia.

The service will utilize broadband internet connections to bring FOX Sports, Discovery, Nickelodeon, Disney, MTV, and other leading channels to the Xbox 360 console. Additionally, Microsoft has teased further Video-on-Demand services - though, the release was short on specifics.

The Foxtel service will be accessible to all homes with a broadband internet connection - and that fall within Foxtel's current coverage area. Users will be required to purchase an Xbox Gold subscription and a Foxtel by Xbox LIVE subscription.

According to the release, "The agreement between Microsoft and FOXTEL is one of the first of its type in the world, joining partnerships between Microsoft and BSkyB in the UK and Microsoft and CANAL+ in France.

"Microsoft and FOXTEL are working together to launch the FOXTEL service on Xbox LIVE towards the end of the calendar year. Packages and prices, the full channel line-up, and further product details will be released publicly closer to the service launch."

Stay tuned for full details in the coming weeks and months.
