Hi All,

I'm in need of an inercooler for my r34, and I know its a very general and too hard a question.

What I'm looking for most of all is an IC that will require no cutting into fan or cutting bigger holes in places if at all possible.

As an example the MonstA cooler on ebay although good in size and price and I'm not fussed that its no brand item, from googling around to see how it gets installed you would have to butcher quite a bit.

The Greddy although great is way too expensive I do not believe in spending over 800aud

What I'm asking is of all r34 owners, how hard easy was it to fit your IC and what you / they did to make it fit and also size of IC. Of course we all want a 100mm thick core but if that means doing a face transplant on the car then I will pass on that.

As far as the law what was the worst experience anyone has had that could be blamed on the IC.

I'm not sure I would go as far as cooling myself an experienced IC installer but I have done a fair amount of research and I am currently installing a FMIC into my R34.

I chose the Blitz CS return flow intercooler as the piping goes back to the existing piping and doesnt require cutting of a hole through the battery tray or trimming of the fan (something I didnt want to do).

Installing it hasnt been too difficult, its pretty straight forward and the kit supplies the necessary piping and brackets etc. I have hit the stage of installation that requires cutting of the front reo bar as well as plastic from the back of front bumper. I am not very happy with having to cut the reo bar, the plastic doesnt bother me but I am concerned about insurance and safety etc as they bar is put there for safety reasons in case of a crash.

I have tried to find away around cutting it but it appears there would be very little alternative, I'm still glad I went for the return flow instead of the normal way as the cutting is still minimal in comparison and I also feel personally that the other way which involves cutting of the battery tray and fan blades looks shithouse and if its not done right can make your whole engine bay look cheap and tacky.

If you need any info on where I got my cooler from flick me a pm - it cost around $750 delivered to Perth, a fair bit of money but its a quality product and the only downside i've found from going the return-flow option is you don't have room to run a cold air intake to your air filter.

Thanks Steve, good post. Also what size is the Blitz core.

No worries mate, I'm still learning heaps so I try help where I can coz i know how hard it can be to get answers sometimes.

Umm.. I just had a quick look at the specs, I'm pretty sure the one i got is Core Size - 620 x 266 x 76mm they have them on the justjap website but they are out of stock at the moment. I got mine elsewhere just PM if you would like to know mate.

Another thing to make mention of is why are you looking to upgrade the cooler? What mods do have have currently or do you plan to do, I found its not really necessary until you start upping boost etc as it is considered a 'supporting mod'. Alot of poor misinformed folks are disappointed when they don't see hp gains etc because they dont investigate its purpose. I initially was going to install one for the 'wank' factor but held off and did the more important things first like coilpacks, zorst from the turbo back, suspension, clutch, flywheel and now that i'm increasing boost and getting a PFC installed i decided it was time for the cooler.

buy chinese ebay! pay $400 cheap cheap! pay $500 in fabrication and fitment for piping and parts that don't fit! yay!

buy greddy / trust / blitz!! pay $800 and have everything fit straight up!

I wouldnt even bother looking at the cheapo brands mate.. if cash is really tight you could look at the cooling pro turn-flow ones on Justjap - not sure of the quality etc compared to the likes of Blitz but they are cheaper and at least you would have somebody in Australia to go back to if anything were wrong.

ebay - something is wrong and you're pretty much screwed and end up having to fork out as per Rowans post.

we have the trust ones in stock for 800$

they fit perfectly , have instructions , come with everything including a new washer bottle. If your DIY I would recommend this strongly , if you take your time and follow the pictures you can't really stuff it up

with china , who knows what you will get . some are ok , some are totally wrong and need chopping and welding just to even begin to fit . Also they seem to come with really bad hose clamps that break or just don't fit and good clamps are expensive if you replace them all.

honestly 800$ is not that much more than a china ebay one plus shipping .

In terms of legality , if you chop your re-enforcement bar it may be deemed illegal especially if your remove it entirely . If you chop a hole in the chassis for the return pipe that may also be deemed illegal , particularly on a R34 which must meet stricter ADR's for front impact protection . This is a a bit of an uncertain one however as GTR's have the same hole for the return pipe. I have not heard of anyone defected for a return pipe hole but the pits love to defect hacked up re-enforcement bars.

back on topic - autoworx completely covered this topic - if you're doing DIY... it's best to splurge out on the parts... that makes it easier in the long run..

working those extra few hours at coles or saving that extra week for an intercooler will be a godsend when you "put it on" and everything just WORKS without any bending / cutting / repairing / destorying / accidentally supergluing your fingers together etc

    • For these last 7 years of ownership, I've always had to use a small scissor jack under one of the front tow hooks to raise the front just enough so my low-profile jack fits under to reach my subframe jack point. I'm beginning to get annoyed of always having to do this. Are there any lower low-profile jacks that fit under the gtr lip on a dropped car?
    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed 
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
