Hey all

I have recently put a new HD button clutch in my skyline r32 gtst. The process was simple enough and everything seemed to go together pretty easily. I replaced the gearbox snout as the old one had broken off.

Then all the trouble started once I started bleeding the clutch system. I am only using the master cylinder nipple as the other two bleed nipples are at lower points and only clutch fluid is cumming out no air. So I am continually bleed from the master cylinder nipple. Its pretty simple and as Im bleeding I can see the slave progressively moving more and more. The only problem that I can visible see as I bleed is that the master cylinder moves upwards and the clutch pedal is pumped. I have now gotten to the point where I am no longer seeing any improvement in the slave cylinder's travel.

The problem is that the clutch isn't able to fully disengage. I have tried adjusting the u thingo on the ending of the master cylinder but still no improvement. I have noticed that the clutch pedal sits about 1 half the distance that the brake pedal sits. I have taken the clutch pedal box out and have inspected it. The mounting bolts seem to be slightly bent.

My question is what should I do to try and extend the travel of the slave cylinder to get the clutch to fully disengage? Should I put spacers between the clutch pedal and firewall to try and sit the clutch right? Is it the slave cylinder?

I am totally lost and any help would be greatly appreciated.

From under dash there is a bolt stopping the pedal from moving towards the drivers seat. This may even be a switch. Unlock lock nut and take wiring off then wind it out till the pedal is at desired height.(same as brake pedal) then lock lock nut and put wiring back on clutch switch.

Then adjust the pushrod that goes from pedal into the master cylinder.

Try this and let us know

I have attempted to do this with no success twice. The clutch pedal sits still too low with the bolt removed. The nut type thing on the master cylinder is already adjusted quite long and has made very little to no difference.

I Will keep trying once the weather drys up a bit. Thanks for your input DVS 32R.

Had the exact same problem with my r32 after rebuilding the gearbox, turns out it was the pivot ball inside the bellhousing that was to far in so the travel from the slave cylinder wasnt enough to disengage the clutch, take your gearbox off an have a look, its a 17mm spanner to unwind the pivot ball an bobs your uncle :)

    • Based off what you’ve said here, I think I’ve figured out a good bit of what I’ve done wrong -  So on the line going from the PCV valve to carbon canister, there’s a T joint that is pretty much right next to that lower port - I hadn’t noticed that the hose in the diagram was curved to attach onto the carb, so I was putting that line for the lower port onto the PCV line / carbon canister line instead. I’m going to have a flick through the manual again tomorrow and should hopefully find a diagram that’ll show me where that T joint should be connected to. Timing also 100% needs to be sorted out as well, should be able to tackle that tomorrow as well. Definitely feel like I should be on the right track now though. 
    • The screw is for idle (pilot circuit) mixture adjustment. Else, I'm confused ~ the diagram shows 2 carby ports, and the intake manifold port, but you're suggesting the "2nd port on the back of the carb that isn’t mentioned in the diagrams" ...yet, both carby ports are shown...que?... ...in any event, that port should be connected, but if not (like it is now), it's unlikely to cause a backfire out the carby (it would introduce false air and give you a fast/lean idle) ...sounds more like timing issues/spark plug wire routing responsible for the backfiring.    
    • That's fair, I can see both points. I get enthusiastic when I see the FS section has a new post and want to see what interesting thing someone is selling. Then I get deflated it's a bump of a 10 year old post. Ha ha
    • Couple of litres of moonshine from his southern cousins would do it...
    • Brakes definitely won't make him faster. They only slow you down. 😛
