Okay so I'll be getting a new exhaust some time in the next couple months, and I was wondering what I should be looking for?

I've got the RB25DE S2 R33. (no turbo).

Due to the lack of the turbo, I was told that I should be looking at 2.5" piping, mandrel bent. I want to get a varex xforce muffler (the valve one) so I don't have a loud exhaust all the time (especially on long trips or if my girlfriends trying to talk to me). Are they any good at muffling the sound when the valve is closed?

What should I be looking for in regards to the headers? Is there some sort of configuration I should keep an eye out for (eg/ I know 4 cyl cars have 4-2-1 and something else, is there something similar for 6cyl cars?)

What headers have you guys had good experience with? What are you using? Did you get much of a power increase out of them?

Also, with the cat, is there anything I should be keeping an eye out for?

Yeah mandrel bent for sure you can either go stainless or mild steel there are the obvious rust comparison between the two but sound wise i have heard that MS sounds better. also you will most likely get a header config of 6-1 as thats what most places will want to do for you. also make sure they are coated headers, usually ceramic.

brand name is out of the question as no one makes them for NA skylines, at least 34's not sure about 33's but im sure its in the same boat. there are cat back systems you can get that are brand name but, with the name comes the dollars.

The varex is a bit of a mixed opinion. some people think its great some hate it and shake there head when they see it. but as for quietening the NA, as you dont have the turbo to muffle your exhaust sound, the varex seems to do well with quieting things especially when you are close by to the boys in ss's and xr'6s :-) and its meant to give a good sound when open try searching for a you tube vid there use to be one around.

as for the piping yes 2.5 inch is the way to go. some ppl say 2 3/4 but you still need that back pressure in the NA so no point going any bigger than 2.5.

and finally the cat. you want to find a high flowing ceramic cat.

how much would i be expecting to pay roughly? $1300?

ive seen the video on youtube. i didnt notice a masisve differenxe but that was on camera and next to the muffler, so its a bit different to inside the cabin irl. i was interested to see if people were happy with the results.

so youre saying there are no brand name catbacks? no fuss, was gonna get the local exhaust shop to do the piping anyways. :)

oh, another question; if i get the headers cat piping and muffler, is it sifficult to install all of this myself?

Mate there are a huge number of threads regarding this issue, unfortunately the new search function doesn't seem to be working properly.

Sift through the NA forum pages and you will see hundreds of exhaust threads. I did a huge amount of research and it actually seems 2 1/4 inch is the best for all round driving, 2.5 for slightly better top end with a sacrifice in low end, and 3" is straight up too large (unless you want a nice power figure on the dyno with f**k all drivability).

You could install some things yourself if you purchase them off the shelf suited for your R33 (e.g. cat back will just bolt up, as with headers).

Extractors may not give you a higher power figure but help in the respone of the throttle. More snappy.

As for the varex, i personally think they sound awful - open or closed. I would get a nice twin-tip that sounds throaty but not too loud but that's just me.

*NOTE TO MOD: i think it would be awesome if you could bundle together all the exhaust size threads into one big sticky becuase it is clearly a common topic.

Tbh i quite like the sound except for the top end where i think the valve vibrates, you can hear it in this video.

When the exhaust is closed you pretty much cant even hear the exhaust it is so quiet, great for highway driving.

The varex muffler is much better than the previous no name cannon that was on there, it has pretty much eliminated the raspy noise and has given it a deeper idle.

I've researched a fair bit. I'm looking for kinda reassurance and tbh, I didn't really look up which headers to go for.

I do agree with the idea of a consolidated exhaust thread. We need a proper sticky with updated, comprehensive information.

I might throw up the results of some of my research when I'm done and have it installed :)

    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.
