Hi to all..hoping you can help me out here,

Living in Thailand and a while ago i bought a VL Calais [imported apparently from NZ and had a RB20 engine original ]

Some time ago it was fitted with a later model engine which i believe is the RB20DE..[Not easy dealing with Thais as i dont speak to gooda Thai] but has ECCS and RB20 on front of engine???Am i right in presuming this is indeed the twin cam, because of ECCS? Please correct me if not.

Anyway car has run rough since i bought it, mostly breaking down under acceleration[ sort of starving] BUt if i manually select low gear and boot it , it takes off like a scalded cat!And revs out to redline easily.

Also using heaps of fuel when cruising even[ maybe 5 kpl...] Starts and idles well.

Recently tho the car starts and idles well, but as soon as i accelerate more than maybe 1/4 throttle it basically dies and even backfires a little, and if i back off i can slowly get up to speed but as soon as i accelerate a bit more or attempt to go up hill, it really bogs down and wont power on unless im using very small throttle. If i select first and boot it as before, it basically dies now.

Initially fitted new fuel pump and air filter and fuel filter as trial, but no effect really .Have been just puting up with it as it really is only a shopping trolley and not too concerned. Now a guy wants to buy it...if i fix it first...so here i am.

I was tinkering today and took off the cap on the air flow meter and found a copper plate thingo that had been soldered to the top of the electonics stuff..aha ithought . heres the problem..resoldered , but no change.[ maybe has shorted out the electrics?]

OK take the number of it and see if i can get a new one.The number comes up as being for a Maxima..22680=16V00...maybe this has been the problem all along? If so do you know the correct number for this model engine?Am i on the right track, do you think..if not please give me some much appreciated advice on what to do....apart from a big fire!

PS ....car is auto.

Thanks for any help....Mark

Hi mark....welcome! id say your post is better off in a diffrent section....im sure someone will move it sooner or later.....eccs refers to the efi system.....does it have spark plugs down the centre of the engine or are they offset to the intake side?

I'd just drill it out and tap ina 1/4" thread. No need for rocket surgery when the next most obvious thing will do. You could throw a 1/4 x 1/8 bush in there and use the same fitting you intended to use.
    • Is the only issue that the oil catch can is getting filled on hard runs? I'd be thinking more about oil control issues rather then the head lifting, especially as you aren't seeing spiking in the coolant pressure.  Do you need restrictors in the head, or better drains from the head? Does the sump need venting to the catch can?
    • Tried to make 1/8npt threads into compressor house of the turbo for my EBC. Threads got fu#ked and ended up with and elongated hole, so I do have good amount and nice threads 90% of the hole but 10% I only had 1-2threads there and rest of it is flush on that side of the hole.. So my idea is to do M12 x 1.25 to AN4 with braided lines instead of 1/8npt to 4mm vacuum silicone hose.  and hopefully get a better thread. M12 is quite big and AN4 is a little bit bigger than 4mm (4.9mm inner diameter braided PTFE hose). but this should work. Thoughts? Otherwise I will weld and adapter onto the turbo.
