Ah well. Another day at the track. What can I say about today's efforts?

I guess the only really good thing I can say about today is that the weather was good for racing.

The best result today was a run of 11.03@138MPH with a 1.88 60'. Nothing to write home about but still showing a good MPH.

We started the day with a high 12 and then a high 11 with a big cloud of smoke. When we lifted the bonnet, we had found the the oil cap had come loose and shot off the rocker cover to spray oil across the engine bay. Not so bad as there wasn't a huge loss of oil.

The next 2 runs lead us to more trouble as there was a loss of boost somewhere undertermined. Thanks to Nige and Karl, they managed to source the problem and solve it with little trouble.

The next run then lead to a problem of overheating and the Autronic cutting the engine at 7500 in second (1300 rpm before rev limit). It was found that the radiator had little to no water in it which we found strange as the fluids were all changed in the morning before heading to Heathcote.

Once the radiator was filled again, it was time to hit the track again.

A clean burnout lead us to belive that it was to be a solid run. The launch was fair but a big bang and cloud of black smoke in second killed the run. Marshals on the track were then picking bits up off the track. We knew this was bad :(

The car came back and the bonnet lifted revealed that the stock radiator had blown itself to smitherins.... The cap had stayed on but the top of the radiator had cracked from one end to the other spraying fluid all over the engine bay again.... Although cleaning the oil from the first incident off, it had now left coolant all over the bay.

The car was then loaded back onto the truck and we all went home in disappointment.

I must give much thanks though to those who came up and supported the running of the car again. Special thanks to Gerald, Nige and Karl for getting the car together in time to race, Jack from CityWide Towing for all the efforts he's put in to getting my car from point A to point B, James for lending me his oil cap in a time of need (I promise I'll give it back soon), Des for the lending of the battery and the SAU/FA people who came up to support the car. If I've missed anyone out, please forgive me as I do appreciate the support.

A new radiator and thermo fan will be ordered this week and fitted to the car shortly and we will most likely run again when I return from Japan on June 12. The 4,6 rotaries are on on June 19 so we may aim for that day.

    • I was 99% sure the standard one is long enough to get there, you might just have to change the throttle orientation. If not, I remember someone having used an r31 cable instead, but that is probably harder to find than r33 by now...
    • HELP   Hey all, Is there an accelerator cable from another Nissan that can be used on the R33 GTST RB25DET with a Greddy forward facing plenum?  Thanks in advance  Rob
    • Or do we think it was installed to give 1 bar of boost max, all day, everyday?
    • So could it be assumed it has been installed intentionally with potentially a power FC boost controller kit?
    • Had my rig on Matt's dyno at PITS the other day. After a few years between tunes I added a few sensors and swapped intercoolers. Result. 553hp at 26psi. Not bad for an FJ20 that was built in 2007. The problem.. It filled the overflow bottle on hard runs which leads me to believe the head gasket isn't sealing. I have a coolant pressure sensor which was reading cap pressure at 22psi and occasionally overrunning to 23/24 psi on deceleration after a pull. It was not spiking. It has arp2000 head studs and a cometic gasket. As its been 18 years in service, I pulled the engine out and head off. Everything looks good but we obviously have an issue. Where I'm at.. Years ago I had the same issue, I checked the stud tension and they were all over the place. Some at 60 to 70 and some up near 90. I nipped them all to 100ft lbs and this stopped the water push until now. I believe this compromised the gasket back then. What do I do? 2 options are..  1) I bought arp 625+s, which I could put in with a new gasket. Thinking Kameari this time, reassemble and try again. 2) strip the block, get fire rings machined in with copper gasket and try that. I do not want to push it more than 28 to 30psi. I think the turbo will be out by then anyway. (G30-770). My other concern is the long term ability of a copper head gasket. Are they streetable for years? I feel like a new gasket with the new studs will probably suffice, but I don't know. Any thoughts welcome and advice on copper gaskets and fire rings. Thanks!
