does a larger spark plug gap (as large as possible), necessarily equate to more power (noticeable power).

We close our spark gaps to compensate for any extra boost, but are we effecting our car's power/effiency in other ways by doing this...(3 steps forward, 2 steps back???).

Would it really be that nice if we could all get a set of Splitfire Coils Packs and run massive GAPS ?? (would we actually 'feel' the difference...I'm not interested in Dyno results that show a .0009% diff).

Is that why there are such things as Splitfire's etc....because those in the 'know' realise that there are 'real' power advantages to be gained here.

Or is this just another 'Peter Brock Crystal Polariser' thing.

Keep in mind that my Skline, and probably yours, is a daily driver.

Thankyou, I look forward to your thought!!

Mark

the coils have to be upgraded to support the spark to make the gap to ignite the fuel to push your skyline into the horizon. Those coil packs are a neccesity when upgrading your turbo so that you can make a strong enough spark. The larger the gap the more power you should get until you gap it too much and you start to lose power because there is no spark.

Please correct me if im wrong.

thanx again Croatian.

Spit.

Larger gap and I notice a drop in power. Almost like a hessitation higher in the rev range.

I have to gap mine to around .75-.80 minimum. Thats running up to around 16-17psi of boost.

Hey Joel, what mods have you done to your engine internals to make it handle that boost. Don't tell me about the outboard stuff that made you get the extra boost, please tell me if you've had to do any engine 'strengthening" (?)

I'm currently reading 10 spike 11 on my speco, with a totally stock motor.....do you reckon that's safe.?

Thanx Mate.

Its an RB20DET that runs 16-17psi.. they have a lower static comp so they handle more boost without having to fiddle with the ecu.

+ its got an external pump fitted so it runs rich which keeps the combustion temps down and helps keep the ceramic exhaust wheel cool.

No doubt if it hit the track the turbo would let go.

Depends on the tuner if the boost is safe or not.

On the stocker ecu you tend to get power dips over 11psi anyway.

well explained Joel, makes sense (lower compression motor can handle more boost!!)

"Depends on the tuner if the boost is safe or not. :)".....am I the 'tuner'.

are you saying that it depends on common sense, constantly listening to the workings of the car and noting anything 'out of place' will keep Skline happy....and did I mention COMMON SENSE?

thanx man 4 ur quick response!!

mark.

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
