Has anyone here had any problems with these dizzy's??

Im currently having a problem with my r30 with cutting out and missing eraticly on boost.

Now i sent it off to the l20et guru around here and he found out my dizzy was retarding and advancing eraticly so quickly that it was cutting spark.

After a while he narrowed it down to a fauly water temp sensor.

Got the car back. it was only running 5psi.:rant:. and sometimes missed a little. on boost.

Changed the plugs that came right.

Cranked it back up to 10psi. "tryed" and all turned to shit.

Misses on boost.

Down on power off boost.

SLow as a mofo

And Will completly cut out and back in.

Now im not sure if this is related to the dizzy. i presume its a spark related issue.

Now this is what i have done before to try and stop this problem.

which it was doing before i sent it off.

list.

Replaced plugs. x3

Gaped PLugs x3

Changed Fuel Filter.

New High Flow Fuel pump. (so powerfull burnt out my Speed stepping contollunit."

Rewired in a relay system.

Removed all injectors. new hoses and clamps on both barbs.

Changed AFM x3

Changed battery.

Checked Resistance of cap, rotor. leads.

Rewired coil. Stiped harness back to Ecu from coil to check for any damage.

Replaced Fpu.

Replaced Water temp sensor.

Removed whole intake system.

Checked for leaks cracks. in intercooler and piping. all sweet.

Removed compessor housing off turbo. all sweet. refited.

New Clamps.

Checked all VAcume lines. all fine.

Cleaned all connectors in engine bay.

Tightend bov. Remided cut out. for a short time. in early days. sometimes did it around 5000rpm. only running 8 psi.

Problem back again.

Cleaned all grounds/earths.

CLeaned and Adjusted TPS.

Missing still there.

Im stumped.

Unless i can find a new dizzy and rotor. which you cannot in new zealand, that i know of. (i work at repco)

........lost............

Pics below if you want to have a look.

She's a bit messy atm. lots of rust repairs and paint working being sorted atm

i had a bitch of a time trying to replace the dizzy for my l20et, close'ist i got was being offered a whole working engine $900, ended up being one of the reasons i went to the rb20det, have you looked at the dizzie from the L24e, what about a distribitor place...

what afm are you using and what ecu as well, how long have you run the car at 10psi?

well, ive been looking for a dizzy for it, and yeah its a bitch. the l20et came with 2 style's, one wasnt advace retard. and one was. THe non retard/advance was 1/2 the size. which will not work with the fully electronic system. ONly if you can find a ecu to match.

A l24 dizzy is the smaller style. from the ones i have seen around here. and no one in new zealand holds a dizzy for any l's

Im using factory afm's and ecu

i replaced the original ecu with another. due to the fact my old one would kill the fuel pump and spark. and it got to the point, where it would hold the injectors open.

Replaced it and i gained heaps of power.

Only running on 8psi. whcih was "alright"

I used to run 14psi on it for 6 months and it ran sweet. and it was even better with the intercooler fitted. soooo much toruqe :)

Even had 20psi spikes with no troblle and its running ritch.

im thinking of trying another l20et ecu which i know works. and is currently on a 145rwkw l20et. so it does do a good job.

i have an L20et ecu from my old engine sitting in the boot of my r31 doing nothing if you want it? my engine had the dizzie removed and sitting in the boot of the car, there were 2 there, they were the larger type as well.

PM me if you want the ecu as i have no use for it..

L20AET dizzy is identical to the L28ET dizzy.

Get a new rotor/cap from Nissan.

You can fit the VG30 chopper wheel & pickup (with some slight mods) to get a true 6+1+360 sensor (suited to aftermarket ECUs).

If things don't go so well, then try to get hold of a L28ET dizzy from the US.I'm going to be using this setup in my 240Z (which currently has a custom hall-effect system fitted).

ah thank for the tip. its progressly getting worse. it now on load after 3000rpm with miss, backfire out the intake and exhaust at the same. time. Slowly narrowing it down to the ecu. not sure.

Another possible outcome would be my dizzy cross firing to other cylinders when a intake vavle is open. Unsure tho. doing a compresson test tomorrow to see if there is a burnt valve

    • Yeah, hard to find and a pain in the ass to change with the transverse engine. I’ve worked on a GTiR before and it’s not a job I’d ever want to do again. theres a company in South Africa that makes RS3 gearbox adaptors for the AWD SR20 including gearbox mounts, so I could modernise it and go a dual clutch with paddles. For now tho, it ticks all the boxes. Super cheap, can throw the kids and their junk in the back, and SR20 that I can turbo cheaply, a CVT that’s not a dog’s breakfast like the V35, and has 80% interchangeable parts with stuff I can source from the wreckers cheaply…. But it’s still unique. I love the wagon back of the Autech version. It’s cheap enough that I can buy another stock manual FWD Primera with SR20VE, swap the gearbox to the N15 pulsar short gear ratio box, swap out the brakes to the R32 ones I pulled off my 32, register it on club plates and take it racing. $1300 shipping from NZ. Heaps of parts and aftermarket builders for transverse SR20’s in NZ.
    • Hard to say, just pop the rocker covers off and have a look if you think it's cammed. You probably need to replace the valve cover gasket/half moons anyways.
    • From my youth: GTi-R clutch change is a massive pain. The gearboxes are fragile? But the car is super cool and I want one 😢
