Fuel guage problems???

Just wondering if anyone has expierenced problems with there fuel gauge? I did a search and have been unable to find the info i wanted so here we go.

I have an r33gtst and my friend also has an r33 but gts and neither of our fuel gauges work till only roughly a quarter full. They problem has been there since i owned the car (18months) and his owned his (26months). The guage registers full untill it gets through about 250km into the tank then drops suddenly to roughly a quarter. It is if the fuel sender is gets stuck untill the tank is near empty. The problem doesnt appear to be on the dash however i suppose that is always a possibiltiy? Basically im wondering if an body else has had this problem. If so have you found a solution? Any info input would be great!
