guys i took out the restrictive muffler and put in an aftermarket free flow muffler, and i everything seems ok except that when i rev it and release the gas pedal it backfires! (or gives a popping sound at the exhaust)..

is this bad for the engine? or would this affect performance or the engine?

thanks..more power!

I recently had a hotdog fitted to mine in place of the muffle between the cat and tip. When the car was run after fitting the guy noticed that I have a leak at the gasket just behind the cat.

My point is that mine backfires on occasions when I rev it > 5k. Usual from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to third. Hopefully its not bad for the engine.

thanks for ur replies guys, well so it seems a little backfiring wont hurt at all...also would like to ask if i take out the stock resonator (the one located before reaching the rear differential), would this free up air flow exhaust restrictions too? or would it just make it sound louder?

coz saw on this pic (see link below) on cardomain.com , this guy took the resonator out and did a straight pipe all the way to the muffler..(oh by d way the driver of this ceffy's wasnt hurt)

That would be loud as.

When I got my car it was dump pipe > cat > cannon. That was WAAAY too loud for the road. I had a resonator put in (hot dog style) between the cat and cannon and it's still 96db.

If you really want to know dyno it, take it off, dyno it again.

Thats what mine just had put on it (hotdog) in place of the original middle muffler. I know it is too loud expecially on boost @ high rpm. Gonna get it made quiter cuz I dont fancy a defect.

    • Possibly avoid using a Cometic one unless the deck/head surface are perfectly flat. I did have a look just then and forgiving gaskets such as Tomei or Nitto don't exist for the FJ20, however the Bar-Tek or Kameari ones look good and might do the trick.
    • Because pipe threads for pipe things. M threads for bolt things. Throw some teflon sealant onto it and dust your hands off knowing you did the right thing, instead of going twice around the block to achieve a result using the wrong things. Of course, all of these solutions are ignoring the fact that the minimum thread pitch we're talking about here is 1.25mm, with the 1/4" in NPT or BPS being out around 1.4mm. You will need to know that the boss you're tapping has enough thickness for at least a few threads. That's one of the reasons that 1/8" is commonly used - because the pitch is <1mm. And why would you look to use 1/4" NPT in a BSP country anyway? Ugh.
    • Just throwing around ideas, does it need to be in the compressor cover? Why not the hot side piping?
    • 1/8NPT drill size = 8.7mm. Since the hole got messed up by me, it’s probably around 9mm.    So 1/4” NPT would be next step. A drill size of around 11mm would be preferred there which is not way of my M12 (drill 10.5mm and tap M12 threads)
