Thanks Tosh -
I had that sound when I had my 180SX. It's just the start I'd say. It was the turbo->dump gasket that had deteriorated. It'll slowly become worse until your beautiful car sounds like a Landrover 110 dragging itself up a hill. The reason you're not losing boost is because the compressor is still spinning and if it hasn't become laggier then I'd argue it is because the exhaust gases are still flowing through the turbine, but then leaking/venting under the bonnet. My exhaust noise is barely noticeable when revving in neutral, which is why I lowered the car off the stands and allowed myself a contented grin. First time I actually drove it the car made the dreaded noise. have to go put kids in the bath, back later.

Hi Steve, No sealer, on advice from the dude at Auto One. Last time I listen to that guy. Surfaces were not 'spotless', all previous gasket material removed but could have used a good go-over with a Dremel if I had one. Any ideas on cleaning stock dumps whilst fitted to the car? Cheers dude! Hi Chris, Aftermarket exhaust, flanges are dissimilar shape I torqued them because I was concerned if they were too loose then gas may escape but if too tight mightn't allow the gasket to seal properly. I'm hoping my torque wrench has reverse! I dunno if the breaker bar is up to it again. Well, I won't blame the tools, I just hope I've had enough weet-bix to undo the suckers again. Cheers guys. I'll jack the car tonight, pipes off early tomorrow morning, will report back one way or another. Thanks for the advice, it's funny how much sense it makes now. Should I be surprised that two flanges that are slightly different and a little bit dirty make a poor seal on a gasket that doesn't have any goo on it? ...just wanted to try that smilie, hehe
-
Glad to hear it is sorted by the goop. I'm looking forward to not driving in shame, afraid to put my foot down.
-
The flanges on the front pipes aren't a very good match for the stock dump pipes I'm going to see if I can leave the cat section bolted and just unbolt/lower/goop/refit the front pipes... just sitting here waiting for the exhaust to cool down. Hey! More talk about a tool library! I vote Beer Baron

By recording dates and actions carried out you have covered yourself very very well. For a free service, you could also try: http://www.insuranceombudsman.com.au/ If it aids in understanding why Seaway/Kiwi are behaving like this, please keep in mind how insurance company employees are assessed/reported on - if you have two employees that appear the same on paper yet A has made 5 times as many payouts to clients as employee B, you know who looks the better employee to management. It is the intent of insurance agents to dissuade claimants. Period. Four months after a not-at-fault car accident resulting a vehicle deemed a total loss, we are still trying to get the full payout from the NRMA. Well done to you for pursuing the damage/loss for so long. I'm surprised they haven't worked out you're not going away and decided to pay you. For what it's worth, when my R32 arrived it had significant paint damage around the spoiler when metal chains had been used to tie the vehicle down.

You're welcome! DIY always starts with oil changes and plug changes and you try harder stuff from there. I'm a DIYer too. There is a well illustrated guide on www.niztek.com (or .au?). I found removing the ignitor plug to be the hardest, but my car is a lot older

Beau there's a DEFGRAM out that explains it all. I think most states you have to change your rego within 3 months of moving however you can keep your licence current until next renewal (all states except Vic from memory). Try the defweb first as the RTA will have no idea on the Defence scheme but I am almost 100% that you still need to change your registration within 3 months of your posting wef date.

I don't have any info I'm afraid, just regurgitating something I read elsewhere on SAU. I'm not even 100% on what the OBD acronym means. One of those cases of rinse, lather, repeat -
Hi Heath I have just changed exhaust on my R32. I thought everything went smoothly but I'll add that if the guy at the Auto One/Autobarn/etc. says you don't need gasket sealant with metal gaskets, just go right ahead and ignore that piece of advice... grrrr Where are you moving to? Where in Sydney I mean.

As mentioned, plugs around $25, Splitfire coilpacks around $600 depending upon how you source them. Plugs are super easy, coilpacks come off to access the plugs and from memory they are plug and play also. DIY approved!

Didn't the Consult port change in 1998(ish) from OBD1 to OBD2? caz you'd know better than me but I think NewKleer mentioned something about it in one of his threads. -
Info On R32 Gtr Plz

I saw in FAST that the KH2 GTR's have a patented Crash Protection System only found in that colour. It clearly works as all the other GTR colours are much harder to find 15 years later. And also have a rock that keeps tigers away -

Cheap power mod to make your car faster... why time 0-100 when you can do 0-60 so much quicker -
I agree, would achieve the aim with a lot less heartache. If we could bring up both ideas at the next meeting that'd be great. And if you 'forget' to return my timing light I'll loan my breaker bar to your forehead hehe Seriously though, a loan thread would prob do the trick. Additionally, that would allow all members to borrow tools, rather than just the Sydney guys. There are plenty of guys in the Newcastle/Hunter region. On the issue of protecting your tools whilst on loan, perhaps we could draft quasi-contract with names/member numbers/agreement that the tool is in working order/etc. and go from there. For it to be a legally binding contract you would actually have to pay the person loaning the tool, although payment of $1 would be sufficient. Have to bail, love to talk about the idea more though.

Hi Michael. There is 3rd party injury insurance (aka green slip) and there is 3rd party property insurance. 3rd party insurance is a policy to protect other people (ie. 3rd parties ). So if you have a crash, at fault, any injuries sustained by others will be claimed against your 3rd party injury/green slip policy. If you have 3rd party property insurance, then the other driver claims against that policy rather than having to sue you personally. If you are not at fault, your repairs will be covered. In any event, if you are able to prove you are not at fault and the other party is uninsured, you may take them to court to recover the money you are out of pocket (for repairs etc.) Dude I mean no disrespect but the insurance pain comes with the territory. Same as more expensive tyres, need 98RON and drinks more of it, etc. Basically a broker is someone you call and ask them to organise insurance for you. The way that it works it that you provide him/her with your details, they do all the checking around for you and then come back to you with the best deal. They usually have 'preferred' companies they deal with, due to receiving higher kickbacks. The way it works is say JustCars offers insurance to you over the phone at $4,000 per annum. They offer the same policy to a broker at $3600. He/she then offers that policy to you at $3800. So in the end you save some money and the broker is able to put dinner on the table. Make sense? 3rd party property is the minimum insurance worth considering. If someone hits you, regardless of whether they are insured, you can expect to be ok. If they have insurance it just makes the process a whole lot less painful as you deal with their insurance company rather than fighting it in court. I hope this helps dude, good on you for continuing to look for insurance, a lot of guys blow it off and unfortunately often have to live with the unpleasant consequences.

Nothing constructive to add, just wanted to say I love your avatar erupt

Same as Jon(?)/silver suggested. I know what you mean dude. It might be a goer but I'd just worry more about loaning my own tools rather than knowing someone else is borrowing club tools. With regard to paying it off, my plan was to call for donations of $20 (more if you can show your love/gratitude for SAU assistance) and use those funds to purchase equipment. $20 is half of dinner out and if you could somehow place a dollar figure on how much has been saved from your own pocket just by using the search button or starting a thread, suddenly $20 or $50 doesn't seem so much anymore. It's not even a full tank of motor juice. $20 now, then $5 for a week's rental on a monster torque wrench and you're way ahead. $3 to borrow a breaker bar for the week? Anyway, you know what I mean, I'm sorry if I laboured the point.

Great idea, I've not yet gone that far as I was interested in whether guys were keen in the first place. There seems to be a few guys interested and there are possibly others that didn't post. Off the top of my head, a $500 pool from donations would be around the ball park. And we don't necessarily have to buy new tools either - eBay, etc.? I can start a list by editing the first post. Establish setup costs and ongoings and suss it out from there. I agree with regard to common tools. If it were to go ahead, as I mentioned in the first post, it'd be with rare, one-use only tools. I'm happy to carry out a cambelt change but I'm stuck for finding a torque wrench that will tighten to over 400ftlbs or whatever the insane torque is on that bolt. I would rather have used a steering wheel puller the other week instead of doing it by hand. Other tools like a harmonic balancer puller (or whatever it's called, never used one) or a rattle gun with a few rattle sockets and things like that. I agree that a library of screwdrivers and hammers is a waste of time and effort. A hoist and stand would be great, available on a long-term(ish) loan. Decent compressors are over $500 but a cheapie that will run an air-ratchet and pump your tyres and run a small rattle gun would be great. It is fairly straightforward to establish a check/balance to ensure returned tools are in working order. Even just a test on return. If a tool library is established via club member donations and then spears in due to DIY mechanic negligence, then the club hasn't lost financially. Does the club file a company tax return? I don't know much about the operation of clubs/charity groups/etc. and I'm not sure how they are taxed. If you are filing a return then the tools are deductable however then you're legally obliged to declare the income from renting the tools out. Thanks very much for your input, I was just about to PM you asking you to have a read through the thread. Ultimately, I'd need some direction (yes/no) from NSW Execs before going any further as trying to resolve things by consensus would be difficult (as no one member may speak for the club). Cheers Adam Mark

Hi guys Replaced the front and rear pipe and tightened to the torque setting listed in the manual, being 37-44ftlb. At idle -> 3,000rpm things are fine. When actually driving, at 2,000rpm or so it starts making that sound like you have a hole in the exhaust. Do you need to overtighten when using a metal gasket instead of a cardboard one? I know the existing one was cardboard/gasket paper. Cheers guys, regardless, I'll be under the car again in the morning and we'll try 60ftlb on those biatch nuts.

No dates, haven't thought that far ahead. My preference would be early Saturday morning to increase our chances of no traffic down Hawkesbury Rd. We could head down to Castlereagh (sp?) Rd. then Penrith for KK late breakfast and home. Nothing serious or time consuming, I'm just keen to meet a few locals as I've only recently moved. Never tried Aquagolf, I hope it's less *relaxing* (read: stressful) than regular golf

Bad Richard! Bad Richard! Why am I not surprised? Stop playing with your lightsabre, you'll have to go to the Wasteland for that
-
And g'day Chris! I'll keep an eye out and a hand on the horn button I'm down behind Blaxland shops (the IGA/True Value/etc.).
-
Don't worry about the difficulty, I'm happy to organise it myself. And I agree that Blaxland isn't central, which is why it'd be great for someone closer to Homebush way to volunteer to host the tool shed. I was more keen for a club-based scheme as then the member who borrows the tools are responsible to the club and not to another member. More accountability that way and if it's a club tool library most of the hire/loan $$ will go into purchasing more tools. This way there is another incentive for SAU NSW membership. More members means more events/improved relationships with retailers/potentially higher subsidies on events too. You want to borrow a trolley jack plus stands? Then you'll need to join! I like the idea but I personally would prefer to only loan my own tools to someone I know, whereas if it was a tool library, I'd be more than happy for a phonecall to sort a time for signage and pickup. Only because it then avoids problems later such as "why is my rattle gun now broken?" "it worked when I returned it" but if it's a club tool, then the club can take the hit and purchase a replacement. To the guys who may be keen would you be happy to contribute $20? Funds could be sent to the SAU NSW account and then the club have a member purchase some tools at trade? Would anyone have any sparies to donate? Blaxland guysRB 20 ED rings a bell... might have seen you on the M4 dude but can't pick when. I have a grey R32 with 18"s and boring slimline plates, pics are in my gallery. Vijay we should organise a mini-cruise up to Winmalee and down Hawkesbury Rd Maybe then take the Driftway, lunch at twin servos then M4 to Blaxland...? Grab some of the Western Sydney guys too, like benm and anyone keen. I love Hawkesbury Rd.
