  1. RE the condition of the track surface at Lakeside, its pretty much as it was last time I went to a general practice day in the weeks before it closed. I walked around it last summer reminiscing...
  2. grass/dirt 'khanas are far more forgiving on the driveline than a bitumen event. and far more suited to awd vehicles too!
  3. you can get a engineer to approve disabling emissions equipment??? if you get defected for that and fight it, the engineer might end up in a whole lot of bother... the reason an atmo BOV is illegal is the air can contain pollutants (hydrocarbons and the like) from the crankcase (via the PCV) that are not legally allowed to be vented to atmosphere - they have to be burnt and passed through the cat. it has nothing to do with being filtered on the way out. filtering does not remove any emissions or make it legal. my car has atmo bov's too, but good luck to any police trying to see them! oh, and trucks don't come under the light vehicle rules mate
  4. personally, I wouldn't even call them semi slicks. People use the terms semi slick, R compound, etc interchangably when referring to soft compound competition tyres. Semi slick is about more than the tread pattern to most people - its about a tyre halfway between a street tyre and a slick, and that's more than just a flash race looking tread pattern - its about how they perform.
  5. There is nothing R compound about a tyre with a treadwear rating of 200! Falken have long been producing tyres that look like R compound tyres but aren't. A proper set of R coumpounds are night and day by comparison to the Falkens. I have driven on Azenis RT215, Hankook Z2000, Yokohama A032R, Brigestone RE55S, Toyo RA01. The Azenis are not a true R compound tyre. They are only a marginal improvement over a normal street tyre. There is no real improvement in outright grip levels, but they are much more responsive and consistent due to the sidewall construction and larger treadblocks. but if you want a tyes for the drags, why not get ones designed for that?
  6. its about the transfer (and loss) of torque through the gearbox. 4th 'gear' just directly connects the input and output shafts - basically no torque loss apart from internal friction from bearings and the constant mesh gears under no load. 3rd gear transfers the torque through 2 meshed helical gears to a lay-shaft then back to the output shaft by another set of meshed gears introducing side loads and higher meshing frictions of those gearsets under load, all of which means increased torque/drivetrain loss. that's why you see the same results irrespective of wether they are turbo or NA.
  7. 4th gear should produce a handfull more bhp at the wheels. 3rd gear is a helical gear set meshed between gears on the mainshaft and layshaft. the helical gears will create side loads and extra friction and drievtrain losses. 4th "gear" on the other hand simply connectes straight through the mainshafts in the gearbox - no gears involved, no side loading, no meshing frictions. all of this equals less drivetrain losses. but it will only be a few kw.
  8. no, it doesn't make more sense. your rough running problems are much more likely (ie 99.99999999%) to be caused by your charging problem resulting in poor/weak spark. This would be especially noticeable under load/boost or at night (ie when your lights are on).
  9. not sure Dale. I wasn't there and didn't get regs or anything for the event. Hopefully Giant or Brenken will see the thread. I have a mate who ran there too, so i might give him a call and find out how he went.
  10. giant getting air Brenken's Falken GTR production car (of Bathurst 12hr fame) couple of 33s I don't know Looks like a great event. If I had known giant and brenken were running I would have gone up for a look.
  11. how was it Russell? what was the course like? worth doing next year? i heard people talking before the event that they expected the road to break up. what's your next event? I'd like to come and have a look at your beast in action sometime!
  12. I've got their card - Wheel Revolution 3209 2833 I've had them redrill some wheels for my previous race car, and modify a set of wheels to fit my 4WD. Always do good work, on time, and reasonable prices.
  13. thanks Duncan. July 8-9 is a bit close, and I've decided to park the car for a while until I've got the camber sorted out and fixed a few general maintenance items like rear subframe bushes and a split cv boot. Money I would have spent on entry fees will go into the car for the next few months. Unless someone buys my HR30 coupe, then I'll be back in business! I normally do one interstate event towards the end of the year. Its become a bit of a tradition. I've got some mates in NSW that run at Bathurst Speed Weekend, so that's normally where I end up. And having done it in my old IPRA 2L Datsun 1200, I was dying to take the GTR there when i got that last year. It was actually my first event in the car I want to try some of the other famous hillclimb venues around the place - like King Edward Park.
  14. how bout a HR30 coupe? RB engines are an easy conversion for the 6cyl L20ET, has 4wheels discs, 16*8" on the back, IRS & the 4.1 R200 diff should take all the power you can throw at it! $4000 to a good home and I'll throw in a race seat
  15. best parts were his first race in the riced S15 and learning to drift in the docks. those cars deserved exactly what they got! fibreglass and smashed wings everywhere - beautiful!
  16. nice time! have to give this another go on the weekend. I have to find over 3 tenths! will give the Mines GTR on race-qual tyres a go too
  17. do you know what the track at Tamworth is like? I haven't heard much about it. Any more details, like the date or club? and if SAU NSW do run a hillclimb on the old highway, I'll be there!
  18. absolutely. We only have the Mt Cotton Hillclimb up here. Apart from that, there is a annual event at Noosa, but its run by the Historic Racing Car Club, and its hard to get in these days. I've run it in the past and its a great piece of road. By comparison, NSW have a very good variety of Hillclimb venues. I'll be trying to get into the KEP event this Oct, it's one of the iconic hillclimbs I bumped into one of the guys from the club that runs the Bulladelah hillclimb last year on the way back from the Bathurst Speed Weekend, when I had to stop at Karuah for a puncture repair on the trailer. He said they always run a couple of events a year there - that's where I got my info which is obviously out of date now. Shame its down to a single event...
  19. sorry, didn't sound like you knew there were already Hillclimbs running on the Old Pacific HWY just north of Sydney. Why not just enter one of those events that are already up and running?
  20. cool. all GTR's or various cars? If they can get manufacturers involved again, I think this would be a great thing to see. Good old fashioned class based production car racing on road legal tyres. Would give a great performance yardstick for potential customers.
  21. you don't need to own a log booked car to get a C3 licence. all the details you need are on www.cams.com.au. I don't know anything about Vic's rego requirements.
  22. nice taxi! joking! looks like a nice clean original GTR you got there. But I think you should get some wheels like your avatar, and sell the stockies to me for my 32.
  23. they already run 2 Hillclimb events a year on the Old Pacific HWY at Bulahdelah, including a round of the NSW Hillclimp Championship. Noosa Historic Hillclimb also runs on a Public road, and there are many "Street Sprints" in SEQ, also Speed Events. King Edward Park Hillclimb also springs to mind as being on a public road.
  24. believe he's been running the Lseries in NZ. He has an FJ24 in the S12 Silvia he bought off Michael South last year, and has run that a couple of times up here.
