Microtech Computers & Running Lean
Freebaggin replied to AlexR31's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Hi there, Tim at RPM here in Adelaide would be able to help you over the phone no worries, he has years of experience with the Microtechs, 08 8277 2266. I have spoken to him in the past about the A/F ratio indicator on the handset for my car since mine can sometimes indicate 18-19 ratios as well under boost and Tim's response was that the output is not accurate so it might not be anything to worry about. So the best thing for you might be to get it dynod with a proper A/F ratio meter in the muffler tip, like an Autronic version. By the way, I have just placed an order for the laptop addapter for my LT-12 for $75, so looking forwrd to the data logging etc. Can an MT-8 run with a laptop as well now? -

turbogtst, Thanks for the clarification. One thing I hate on these forums is when people make aggressive statements or denegrade something when they have no data or experience with the issue. Your system sounds like it works for you so that's good. Don't bag other systems outright. BTW, I have spoken to many tuners and they are quite happy with the overall performance of the Microtech. You are correct though re load points but they are actually working on the update.... one reason for my choice. Freebaggin.

turbogtst, How the hell would you know how the Microtech goes for drivability in R33s anyway? Can you do laptop data logging?? Do you need AFM? Yes, and if you didn't have it then you probably be making more power. Can you monitor engine functions with hand controller? Can you control extra injectors, NOS, boost, run injectors of any resistance all controlled from the ECU? Blow it out your arse before you make statements like "can't beat the factory ecu".

Boosted32, Nice front bar. Can you find out who did that job for us, it's a good price and the quality looks good. Ta, Lachlan.

Won't worry about knock detection at this stage, I'm relying on Tim @ RPM to tune enough safety in it to avoid the need. However the knock detection on the PFC is a v.good feature and I'm sure later down the track the lads at Microtech will have a module that will do the same. Looking forward hearing how you go with improved intake system!
-
Your right matlowth, For the current crop of $1300-2200 ECU they're all good, but if your tuner aint switched on then the perception is that the ECU you've got is not. Microtech has no knock sensor and cold start is fine. Whoever told you that your gonna have to ditch the Power FC are wanking themselves, how many 600-800HP GTRs have we seen in Zoom and HPI with Power FCs! The only limiting factor might be the AFM flow restriction, but you can get a twin Apexi setup that could eleviate that anyway. BTW, huge power youre getting! What gear was that dyno run with? Also are you running aftermarket fuel reg and what intake system do you have? Cheers, Freebaggin.

Don't get me wrong, no way does it drink the juice, it's just worse than when I had the factory ECU installed but that being said, I now have 30 more rwkW to play, and when I play it then drinks the juice!!! If I try and get good fuel econ (it's a daily drive car) I can still get 12-13L/100km around to and from work which is pretty good. Try that in a 5.7L V8 that has less power!

b2barker, I don't think any ECU (aftermarket or factory) uses the O2 sensor with mid to WOT mixture setting, that is all done manually during the tune. It's the light load and idle stuff where an ECU either does or does not use the O2 sensor for mixture control, the latter being open loop. When in closed loop, the ECU leans the mixture out a huge amount to save fuel, however according to the open loop tuners you shouldn't have to rely on a closed loop system to give optimum fuel economy during cruise and idle, it should be inherent in the tuning. But I assume it does make a bit of difference to have closed loop for fuel econ, but it dulls throttle response during cruising as a consequence because the mixture is so lean.

I know that guys upgrade their throttles to the XF version which is 65mm (Sub-zero 10.6 R33 for eg I think), so I'm sure the standard RB25DET is less than that ......or else they have gone backwards! I'll have to measure it myself I suppose. Freebaggin.
-
Hi again, I asked this question on SDU but not much luck, Zapf suggested 70mm but I dought it, it's smaller than that I'm sure. So does anyone know the inside diameter of the throttle (or the butterfly for that matter) on the RB25DETs? Thx, Freebaggin.

Thanks guys. Clint32, you made alot of changes there in one hit so it might be difficult to isolate the effect that the sway bars had on improving the handling, but I know it is difficult to do everything step by step. I made a change once to the front set-up, it was an adaption of the K-Mac Falcon camber adjuster to give me more adjustment and that improved turn in unbeleivably so the combined changes you mentioned would certainly have helped. Anyway, I'd love to check your car out. When are you going on cruise next? Freebaggin.

I have the following suspension set-up (R33 GTS-T): *King Spings (200lbs) *Bilstein Shockers *Front and rear strut braces *Other bits and pieces including offset Nolethane bushed for camber correction I can pick up a set of front and rear Whiteline sway bars second hand for a good price and was wondering if they will be of any benefit. They are solid bars without adjustment either 1mm bigger or the same diameter as the hollow factory ones. Need to confirm this. My set-up is pretty hard now with only a bit of body roll and I suspect if I go sway bars I'll just stiffen it up too much and either get too much understeer or poor rear end grip underpower out of corners. What do you reckon? Freebaggin.

XrSiSt, A bit of both really, but if you want plug-in then you have the choice of only two systems. If you don't care about plug-in then Autronic, Motec, Haltech, EMS, Wolf 3D etc will all give you heaps of power, drivability and functionality. However I mentioned in the previous page the reasons for the choice, have a look at those and ask agian if you have any more questions. Freebaggin.

Get that sucker gropin and you might have a fighting chance!

Joel, You know Tim at RPM pretty well so why not consider the GT28 400HP unit for RRP $2300. It has a small exhaust A/R of 0.63 so spool up should be good. 4" inlet and 0.7 A/R compressor should also give you 200rwkW easy. All you need is the spacer for both rocker cover clearence and also adaption to the T3 flange.

Excellent info in this thread! Joel, nice summary of your discussions with ATS, JMS and Tilbrook. grepin, Chris32 and I were only talking about this stuff at the Autosalon. Someone we know bought that hybrid from JMS and is very happy (although hasn't put it on yet). Yeah, turbo selection is a real headache because there isn't enough hard data out there that translates to how the motor will perform in the end! Interesting comments from JMS and Tilbrook about the std Garrett not being responsive enough. Good luck! Freebaggin.

Ahh ha....hang on I'm very much mistaken, that IS me passing you, very sorry for the slag off old boy!!

You're so wrong Gropin! You're memory of that day is becoming warped over time...yes, it must have been traumatic.

Tim hasn't put in on the website yet for some reason, best to e-mail.

INASNT, Some of the reasons I did not pursue the Power FC: *No data logging available at present *Non laptop programmable at present *Injector type limited to factory resistor specs (expensive items usually) *Not possible to control extra fuel injectors, water injection or NOS from ECU *AFM still required at present *Load and set point number only marginally better 20/20 I think compared 16/16. *Expensive *Boost controller expensive *Hand controller expensive *Limited local Apexi support etc So eventually Tim at RPM and I decided to see if a plug-in Microtech could be developed and here we are. Please correct me with any points, but they were some of the issues I had with the Power FC when I was deciding what ECU to get. However as you say some of those issues may change over time with for eg. English software may become available etc.

Whatisname, I think you've covered most it. I think with all the half reasonable prog ECU systems on offer, the WOT peak power and power curve that can be gained would all be within the same ballpark, from Microtech to Motec M800. The piggyback options are less successful for this I think. However it's the other nice things that then make a difference like purchase cost, installation ease (cost), fuel consumption, part throttle drivability, idle quality, upgradability etc. It becomes a compromise. Here is what I think the advantages and disadvantages of the plug-in Microtech are. Adv. *Low cost *Laptop tunable and data logging *Plugin (except for air temp sensor install) *No AFM *Very cheap hand controller (~$150-160) that also datalogs to a point and indicates all the major functions *Pretty attractive Dash display including shift light and also most hand controller functions ($500) *High degree of upgrade flexibility (extra injectors, NOS, boost controller, injectors of any resistance OK etc all controlled from one ECU) *Potential of system not fully realised with software upgrades on the way for increased tunability as well as modular additions Disadv. *Increase in fuel consumption (non closed loop may be contributing to this) *Load and set point number lower that most other ECUs *I still have some flat spots that are difficult to tune out so still more tweaking required (however Whatisname has little or no probs) Anyway, I'm very happy. But the main thing, is that I have only started and I'm looking forward to a trouble free power upgrade path due the Microtech flexibility and also the contstant upgrades that are in the wind for the LT-12. Cheers, Freebaggin.

S..t yeah, see you all there!! Should organise a Skylines Australia "meeting" point at the track.

I'm goin to the race, driving over with two other lads for it. Adelaide/Clipsal 500 is really good and the V8Supercars is not bad, but the perpetuation of the Holden v Ford thing is wearing a bit thin these days. To see (and hear) the variety of engines, V12s, V8s, 8.0L and turbos etc is what GT cars is all about. Might have to take plenty of tissues with me!
