Gm Shows Off 6 New Camaro Concepts
scathing replied to craig V8 taffe's topic in General Automotive Discussion
Camaros are shit hot, and for an "American" car they won't handle too badly. -
Nice chop on the wheels. They've put Z33/V35/R34 Brembos on it.

No probs. All the tabloid journalism that craps on about street racers and that kind of stuff really grinds my gears, and it's hard to find positive press for car clubs that actually behave themselves outside of enthusiast publications that get written off by the public as hoon journals anyway. I don't have any breakdowns on what our readership demographic is like, but we cover a lot of "regular" news and are a lot more mainstream than Zoom, HPI, (whatever) Fours, etc. As an example of media stupidity, I live in Newtown so we get a lot of "alternative lifestyle" newspapers. I was flicking through some Gay & Lesbian newspaper while getting breakfast this morning, and one of the columnists was going on about people getting glassed in the city...and how they're the same people into vandalism, petty theft, and street racing. You'd think that a subculture as misrepresented and falsely villified as homosexuals would try avoid ignorant stereotyping.....but you'd think wrong.

F.s. Fm Platform 6mt Gearbox
scathing replied to scathing's topic in V Series (V35, V36, V37 & Infiniti)
I haven't had the box pulled apart again since I discovered the 5th gear change issue. When I got the box back it passed a visual inspection, but it would take more work and pulling apart to find out exactly what's going on. The price is reasonably negotiable, of course. I haven't seen a 6MT box up for sale on any Aussie forums, so I haven't got a ballpark figure to base mine on. -
Review: Nismo Twin Plate Coppermix Clutch Kit
scathing replied to scathing's topic in V Series (V35, V36, V37 & Infiniti)
I'll have to revise the chatter RPM as being from 1100-1600RPM, after driving it again today and noticing. Basically, you'll only really hear it if you're slowing down because you thought you had to stop, but then the situation changed but you're too lazy to change gear. -
If the rear axle on your car is across the intersection line before the light turns red, it is legal for you to cross.

It's been a couple of months for me to get used to it, so I'll finally post a review of the Nismo twin plate Coppermix clutch kit I had installed. I also had the Nismo braided clutch line installed while I was at it, which is a separate part. Firstly, this is a full kit. Aside from the clutch, it also comes with a its own flywheel. I've been told that the friction discs on a twin plate are a different size compared to the single, hence the bespoke flywheel. As for the ease of installation and completeness of the kit, I've got no idea. Pro Concept did the install and they said that, like all Nismo items, everything just fits like OEM. Driving impression: The first thing I noticed when I got into the car is how much lighter my clutch pedal was. I think my pedal was heavier than most other 350Zs I've driven. Prior to this I had a stock clutch with a JUN flywheel (which shouldn't have made a difference). After getting used to the heft of the old pedal, this one felt really weak, like I was driving a little hatchback. The other, of course, is how much grippier the clutch is. The initial bite as you reach friction point is a lot harder, and the pedal angle between having a bit of slip and full grip is narrower. As such, I stalled the car a fair amount at first. Compared to the stock clutch, it is nowhere near as immediately streetable. Nismo designed the Coppermix to be more streetable than your average sports/racing clutch (it was initially engineered for the Z-Tune) so they wanted something that would handle high loads while still being considered OEM quality. Compared to the other heavy duty twin plates I've driven, it is a lot better. Compared to stock, it feels more temperamental. It's been around 5,000km since I had it fitted and I can't say I've had any drivability issues with it in the last few months. I don't stall the car anymore, and I can still slip the clutch well enough for hill starts without having to concentrate on it. Part of it is probably the material bedding in. It's probably more because it's different to what I'm used to that I noticed it - I know a lot of people complain about Z33/V35 clutches when they get out of econoboxes. The only other ongoing "usability" factor is the chatter. If you load it up at low RPM, this thing is really loud. I thought my JUN flywheel was loud, but this thing is significantly noisier. If you get on the throttle from around 1700RPM in a higher gear, it'll chatter up until around 2200RPM. It's not a major issue as I'm already kind of used to it with the JUN, but if you wanted something dead quiet then keep the engine out of that rev band (unfortunately it's 60km/hr or so in 6th), or look elsewhere. Value: The Coppermix has a rating of 600ps. Since I don't intend on going FI and if/when my engine needs a rebuild I will stick to a stroker kit and not resleeve the block, I'd say that this clutch is overkill for me. The thing is, my prior setup wasn't actually on the way out. It wasn't slipping at all, even after 130,000km, which means the Nissan OEM components were coping with the power levels I'm making. I only replaced it since the gearbox had come out and I thought I'd pre-empt replacing a worn clutch later. I could have gotten a JWT single clutch kit for less than half the cost of the Nismo, and still seen a performance increase over stock. Some sites advertise a Nismo Coppermix single plate, which after the twin plate around I'd highly recommend from a drivability perspective, except Nismo doesn't have any and have no ETA on when stocks will replenish. Basically, if you're a street driven NA and sticking with bolt-ons then I don't think it's worth it. If I had a FI car that was still being daily driven, however, this thing would be the duck's guts. It's more expensive than a metal surfaced twin plate and heavier than a carbon clutch, but it's more drivable than the former and requires less babying than the latter.

Does Anyone Know What This Is ?
scathing replied to manda23's topic in V Series (V35, V36, V37 & Infiniti)
2.3MB! Reduce your image size Manda It's the control unit for a Defi VSD BASIS heads-up display. The display unit, that sits on your dash, is meant to look like this: -
Can you imagine how bad Australia's finances would be if I ran the place? The ADRs would make titanium exhausts and forged wheels mandatory. On the plus side, driving a Honda or Lancer coupe that has a GT wing but has never been on the track would be a capital offence.

Usually Mild Mannered, But Behind The Wheel I...
scathing replied to GTR-N1's topic in General Automotive Discussion
Even if they don't know the specific law, in most cases if the right hand turning bay has 2 lanes there will be lines painted on the road to indicate where the inside lane should go. People should use their farken eyes. -
Hey guys. I've got a 6 speed manual out of a 350Z available for sale. The gearbox is low mileage (around 20-25 thousand km). I recently had it pulled down and visually inspected by a gearbox specialist, and was told that it is fine. When I drove my car with it in, the gearbox was fine aside from the 5th gear synchro. While it was not showing visible evidence of damage, it isn't actuating properly and if you don't slide it in to 5th in a specific way it'll grind the gear. Aside from that, the gearbox feels perfect. It'd be a good buy for someone who's looking at going FI and wants to build up a toughened box. You can drive around on the box if you need to. 5th is usable, you just need to be careful with how you shift it. The first owner had it replaced under warranty pretty soon after he got the car. I had it for about 10,000km while my original gearbox was getting repaired. The majority of that mileage was low-load highway driving, as I've been putting k's on the car for FBT. Location: Sydney Price: $1800 ONO The gearbox is currently at Pro Concept in West Ryde for pickup.

Anyone Know Wreckers For V35 Parts?
scathing replied to Paragon's topic in V Series (V35, V36, V37 & Infiniti)
I'm interested in an ABS pump for a non-VDC model car. I might give these guys a call. If someone knows someone who's selling one, shoot me their details. -
Usually Mild Mannered, But Behind The Wheel I...
scathing replied to GTR-N1's topic in General Automotive Discussion
I get the shits with people behind the wheel, although it passes pretty quickly when they do something dumb in front of me. I wouldn't get out and beat someone, lets put it that way. But, then again, that applies everywhere. I've calmed down a fair amount on the forums, but I used to cut sick at fools in here a lot more too. I can just yell a bit louder in the privacy of my own car. -
I always do a speedo check before going to a speed camera, since I'm always 5-10 over. That sense of worrying about getting busted by the cops means I'm also always aware of where I am, what buildings passing, and the cars around me as well as the way their drivers are behaving behind the wheel. Generally the only time I phase out is if I'm fatigued. A couple of years ago, over the Xmas-New Years double demerit period I drove around obeying the speed limit, not driving in a hurry, just driving around like an idiot. At the end of this period I was going somewhere, and I snapped out of my phase-out realising that I had no memory from after I pulled out of my street to my current location nor was I aware of the cars around me. I was shit scared when I snapped out of - driving with my head up my arse is a lot more dangerous than going a little quicker than the speed limit. But, that's how most people drive. Things I do subconsciously: * Try to pick the smoothest line through corners, within the lane * Always need to be at the front of a group of cars if I can see one, or next to a gap in the next lane if I can't avoid being in traffic * Do 5-10km/hr over the speed limit

I've been waiting 30 years to find a worthy successor to my Datsun 180B. I was going to trade it in to get an R35, but now that I hear the gearbox blows if you repeatedly to hard launches in this AWD car I have to think about it. P.S. I am not a crackpot.

Jdm Parts On An Aussie V8 Supercar :)
scathing replied to TheTunersGroup's topic in General Automotive Discussion
How many race cars internationally run MoTeC ECUs as well? The "JDM yo" 350Zs in Tokyo Drift were running APS twin turbo kits. Seeing Japanese parts on Aussie cars is happening a bit more these days. I was reading in Motor recently, and Herrod's demo ute runs Tein suspension. -
I reckon we just find out where the mics are, and just set up a birdseed tray in front of them. Some of those birds make a massive racket, and if the government tries to shoot or poison them all those nature types will kick up a massive stink. Bonus points for someone who can figure out how to make a kookaburra shit on the camera lens.

If you get an entire LSD unit from a GTS-t then it will have a lower final drive ratio. You'll lose acceleration in-gear, although each gear will stretch to a higher speed. Not particularly recommended, unless you find that you could do with a bit more speed in each gear. I'm pretty sure that Skylines have the speedo sensor coming out of the gearbox, so changing your final drive affects your speedo reading. In Nik's case, when you rip a skid you're more likely to leave two black marks on the road instead of one. From a technical standpoint, you're less likely to break traction on one wheel as power is sent to the other that isn't slipping. With an open diff, power flows through the path of least resistance. If one wheel starts to slip, it gets more power. This means it slips more, and the wheel that isn't spinning gets less. Eventual scenario is that the free spinning wheel ends up getting all the power and the other wheel that has grip just sits there doing nothing. A diff in a turbo car will nearly always have a lower final drive ratio than its NA counterpart if the displacements are the same. With less torque, the NA engine has to be kept up in its rev range while the FI car can use the extra midrange oomph from the compressor to make up for it.

Does that "under your mum's name" shit still work? The last time I called for insurance, they just asked for the name of the youngest driver and based the pricing on that.
-
Send them an email. I'll bet they'll tell you that the car is currently overseas because they thought they could get it rego'ed over there (the address is just where they used to live), but it turns out they can't, so to recoup some of the costs they'll sell it on the cheap but you can't inspect it since it's not in Australia......
