  1. its your input shaft bearing. they are a common problem with skylines and i dont think its that big of a deal for now. i wouldnt bother replacing it coz its gonna cost a shit load to take the box out and apart. as long as you dont go giving the box a really hard time everyday it will be right. just leave it until it gets worse then get it rebuilt or replace the box. i had that problem and the box lasted fine for a long time and it seems there are lots of others out there who have this problem and drive around for a long long time before doing anything (if they do at all). hope this helps. -actually the only thing i would do for now is make sure u have enough oil/replace the oil in the box.
  2. sounds like you had a good box.. thanks for the opinion by the way what do u mean by clutch kicking and flat shifting?
  3. As the title says - just wondering if anyone has had experience using a twin plate brass button on a RB20det and if the box has lasted? Talked to a mechanic and others who say the box wont last long using a real tough clutch like that and wanna know what ppl have to say who actually have one.
  4. im pretty sure its a different shaft.
  5. Is it possible to use the pressure plate from my twin plated brass button clutch with an organic friction plate? Basically will the design on a 2 plate bbutton pressure plate allow a normal single plate friction disk? I havent taken it out yet but i wanna do this when i replace the gearbox so my next box is around for as long as possible.
  6. I've pretty much worn out input shaft bearing and also hardner off the input shaft itself - the car still changes gear fine but is just way noisey (whiney/clicky - like u can really hear the input shaft turn). Drained the oil (lots of metal shavings etc - and refilled with clean oil). Anyway I just wanna know what people think driving around in a car like this? think its dangerous just doing everyday driving? Or is it pretty safe - just annoying noise-wise? I mean i just wanna know whats the worst that could happen realistically coz i have no idea...? I'm planning on getting a new box but dont have the money at the moment so i dont care if the box gets more damaged... i just dont wanna get stuck somewhere from the input shaft failing or something (no idea if thats even possible).
  7. dude go on ebay at the moment and there are at least 3 rb30 reconded boxes off VL's for around $400 - im finding it harder to find a R32 box! anyway basically from what i can gather - the n/a vl's rb30 box is identical to the r32 rb20det box EXCEPT that the rb20det has double synchros on 1st and 2nd.
  8. Just after a 5 speed gearbox off a R32 or R31 in good condition in sydney.
  9. Thanks - do you know how to tell the difference between series 1,2 & 3 R31 gearboxes just by looking at them? Did the n/a VL's come with the series 3 at some stage?
  10. I've read through lots of posts on similar topics but i wanna just get a little clarification on what people may have experienced or what they think of the following... long story (not so) short - Had an RB20det R32 box with lots of input shaft bearing noise ever since i got the car (think its coz of the brass button - lots of people seem to have this problem!)... anyway i boosted up to 14 pounds and went for a drive... bearing lost it in a big crunch after i chucked it into 3rd - pretty sure i finished the bearing off coz gearbox locked up partially... let the car sit for a bit and rolled back slightly and was able to put it into gear and drive home (slowly) with a whiney noise (guessing the bearing smashed and metal got caught in gears and when i rolled back it came out). I think it (definately) needs new bearings and possibly a few synchros.. but im pretty sure the gear set is fine - would the input shaft be damaged from smashing a bearing? ANYWAY BASICALLY i can get a reconed RB30e box for a damn good price and ive been reading that it is the same as the rb20det box so i wanna know what people would do outta these options: a ) buy this very very nicely priced recond rb30e (non-turbo) box (as long as its a straight up bolt on to an R32 RB20det) b ) buy an imported rb20det box with warrantee for a few hundred more c ) pay someone to open my rb20det box and replace/rebuild whats necessary for unknown $$ Im leaning towards the rb30e box just coz of the price + direct fit but im prolly getting around 200rwkw so i dont wanna have the same or similar problems shortly down the track (gonna get rid of the brass button clutch i think). Thanks for any help in advance!
