  1. R33God, that is a good thought...but the GTST and GTR ecu's are made to work with much higher boost values than their stock 7 psi, 9.6psi and 11psi depending on what models you have. With skylines in general, it is the fuel pump and coil packs that let you down before the ECU does - hence I ran Splitfire packs and a bosch 044 in my old GTST to go with the 1 bar. However, they say that the GTR support system is much better than that of the GTST. This includes everything that is needed to run the actual motor. And yeh, I haven't noticed any difference in driveability at all. I take it you drive a Series 2? One day when I get old and frail I will need to go back to something that's smooth and awesome as a daily driver - it shall be a S2!!! I don't think there's any other sedan/coupe from that era that is so easy to drive and handle.
  2. Justin, I took her for a test drive before with new oil, plugs and the restrictor removed. Goes like a dream - yep, no boosting issues - it climbs up to about 13-14psi making 3rd gear the gear of choice rather than 2nd. I find with the extra 2 pounds or so it applies boost better in 3rd. Before this, that gears seamed a bit flat if you know what I mean. Thanks for the advice everyone
  3. Justin, thanks mate...did you have an aftermarket exhaust on your 'line at that time? Curiosoty got the better of me yesterday while I was changing the oil and doing other stuff on the engine. I squeezed the restrictor out of the hose with some pliers but am yet to see how it goes - I don't like driving when it's wet haha, too many idiots where I live who all go berserk when the roads are slippery. I still have my stock exhaust on there so the boost would probably only increase by a pound if at all. If it feels wierd with the exhaust I'll put the restrictor back in and see how it goes when I get my exhaust.
  4. Yes that's very well written and I can think of plenty of people who have poked fun at my passion for the car over the years.
  5. Also, movies like Tokyo Drift really DONT help our image Or?
  6. I like this thread - nice one. There's some very valid points above, especially: "To the public anyone who doesnt drive a BMW, Merc, shitbox or como is a hoon. Your an Enthusiast if you drive a classic.." That's too right. I especially blame the media and "anti-hooning" commercials for what people make of skyline/silvia/180 and WRX drivers. They make it sound as if only skylines are hoon vehicles and that you can only ever kill youself in a skyline or anything esle with a turbo. Most people don't realise that depending on conditions you only have to be travelling at 60km/h to kill yourself and all cars reach that speed....so yeh, it is a bit unfairly biased towards imported Nissans mainly. I too believe it depends on age, what the guy is wearing (shirt, cap, sunnies etc) and how the car looks. You get the performance look....and you get the tosser fully sic stylish look (with duff duff and salad dishes for rims) Yes, what is the go with Magna drivers - can someone explain that lol? Maybe they think that their VRX is a sports car?
  7. No problem mate...I wouldn't have given a crap about it hey? But, I've already been to court about all this so I thought I'd pass on a warning from my bad experiences
  8. Yeh that's a good thread. I see taking the little restrictor out as being a "rough" job for GTR standards if you know what I mean. I think you're meant to either leave it the way it is or take the entire PCM unit and replace it with a properly routed boost controller / bleed valve of some sort. I bought a controller for it and there's no use in me putting it on till I get a proper exhaust - otherwise you'd just be putting undue strain on the turbos with a crappy flowing exhaust. Has anyone here actually taken the restrictor out in their own GTR? It would be good to get some comments from those who have as so far I've just been going of what other people have been told (if that makes any sense). If it's too rough then I wont do it (and will use boost controller instead)....but, if it seams to go alright then I'll take the bung out once the exhaust is on. Yeh I know what you mean with the nice sounding ones hey? A mate of mine has a GTST with garret unit on it the size of a soccer ball. It sucks up small kids on the footpath. This turbo....it does't scream or whistle or go wooosh like a hairdryer....this things howls like a jet engine! Very unique indeed.
  9. Haha this thread's funny. Then there are those in their utes - they seem to all have something wrong with them. I wish I was as cool as the ute guys....sh[t they're like so cool. I might have to have a look on ebay to see if I can find some bolt on coolness that will get me up to ute level with my GTR. Well I've been referred to by a following workmate that I'm a granny driver (lol)...I think I drive too slow for some people's liking hehe!
  10. R33Boy, yep I've been informed about the boost restrictor by someone with a Stagea. I was going to do it but was then informed that the restrictor also has something to do with the smoothness at which the waste gate opens. Apparently when you take that little ring out of the hose the gates are operated quite roughly? How does your GTR feel with the restrictor removed? Well I might get a nice neat box again because I'm one of those who does like the induction noise. I know there are some out there who hate it (especially those who wish they owned a skyline) and then there are those who have gotten sick of it (which is understandable - it's a acquired taste) Could you please give me some background on the boost restrictor ring inside the hose? I want to remove it as stated above, but I'm a bit hesitant. Tom
  11. Yep I get harrassed by commy drivers all the time. It's rare that it's actual harrassment, but just about every day you'd get some ute or other V8 holden equivalant pull up next to me as though I'm waving a banner that says "Race me!". Then you get those that drive right next to you in their auto's and slam the poor car into 1st or 2nd. A VP/VN commodore reving that high in a 60 zone hurts my ears - it's gross! I understand why they call it "rattle-tech" lol! The worst that's ever happened to me is that someone empty their entire bottle of what I think was Fanta over my car. I was very quick to wash it off - god knows what that would have done to my paint. You know, if I cared about them I'd give them an entry form to Queensland Raceway every time they pulled up next to me but the truth is I couldn't give a crap. I just hope that one day their's a d-car right behind me when there's some fool trying to drag! That would be fantastic! Real men race on the track - see you there Bogans My stuff is mild, but I've heard stories from some people that are quite sad!
  12. Hi devildougie, I've done some research into bonnets like that back when I had my old r33 gtst. They look pretty nice and a good site to start looking for them at is unique autosport. http://www.uniqueautosports.com/ Now, the only problem is that cutting a big hole into the bonnet is highly illegal as it takes away a lot of the bonnet's strength when you cut through it's bracing. The first cop to pull you over will issue you with a defect notice, however, you may have a better chance if you got a mechanic to weld in additional bracing to make up for that what you have cut out. Alternatively, you can get one of the carbon fiber ones which are also highly illegal due to how they bust into "shards" of fiber glass on impact. They're purely for track work and even then the track official may have his doubts about the safety of your CF bonnet. Just a couple points to consider mate. Don't worry, I spoiled my fun too when I was hunting for a nice vented bonnet (i now understand why you don't see them at all on the street anymore) ...hope the site has was you're after ;-) Tom
  13. Wow if those are stock turbos he's running then he's pushing them right to their limit haha! With mine I probably wouldn't want to go over 12 pounds or so....where, 13 pounds would be the absolute max! Hey some_cs_student, they don't make any sound at all if you have the stock airbox! My GTST was so quiet! Then, when you take the box it's like BAM! and the sound hits ya! The spool from a GTST (and also GTR) is unmistakable! I love the sound - it got me hooked on them many years ago when I could only dream about owning even the cheapest r32 gtst lol Yep, there are 2 mobs here in town that have AWD dyno's that they hire out.
  14. Yeh mate that was all on my old GTST. I ended up fixing it all up and then I got bored with it so I sold it and got the GTR. What sort of intake do you have? You got a panel filter in there?
  15. Well ok...but you know how the laws are now, you're not allowed to do any mods that don't have a corresponding mod plate code. Trust me, I've talked both to car and truck places that are licensed to hand out modplates and non of them want anything to do with the cone and mushroom style pod filters. How have you guys gone with defects when the cops want to have a look under the hood. I've been to court once so far and have since then gotten rid of the car (a bombed out r33 gtst s1.5) They didnt look at the pods much....they instead got me for the BOV's, ride hight and also the exhaust system which rumbled away at a nice 114DB (lol)
  16. Very nice man! That R32 went so dam fast! ...almost like mine sorta....kidding lol, I wish!
  17. Ah ok...interesting...yeh mine is V-Spec. Hey guys above I mentioned that I wanted to highflow both ends of the car. The exhaust would be a legal one running at 90DB while in the front I was hoping to run a K&N panel filter. Do any of you run these high flow filters and also, do they let out more of an induction sound than the standard panel filter in there. My bombed out GTST had a nice pod in it which made that iconic hair dryer sound with a flutter (a.k.a omg uleh fully sic bro) - loved it. I've seen how well these K&N panels flow - but do they let some of that sweet induction sound out? I know you guys will say that I should mount a pair of pods but they're illegal. However, do you guys know what the cops think of them when they're enclosed in a decent airbox and firmly secured with approved brackets? I was under the impression that they're illegal (and I don't blame them) for when people bolt a pod on and let the whole thing flop around in there! Some_cs_student, yeh....come to speak of that I did notice the rear do funny stuff upon gunning it out of corners on my track day....a funny sensation as if the rear wheels were spinning on different sides sorta..
  18. Guys I actually have another question - my work mate and I have been debating this: How does the ALTESA system work, exactly? It shifts the torque to the front...but torque and hp are two very different things. How many HP does it make at the front compared to the rear seeing that it only rarely shifts it to the front? I know that it's "on demand all wheel drive" which obviously means, as everyone knows, that the R33 is predominantly a RWD till that is, the rear wheels turn 5% faster than the front. ...after that it starts to load up the front wheels till the rear wheels stop losing traction - something that you don't even notice - only the torque gauge gives it away. I guess we'll get a good answer on the dyno?
  19. R33BOY, yeh mate I was much of the same opinion - but this mob seems to have some issues anyway with not only skylines - they seem to stuff every import they come across! They're one of those mobs who think that the first step to making more power is to put a bleed valve on! Who cares what the state of the engine is - we'll just wind her up and see how she goes and then next day my mate asks me why his r33 gtst is surging at 14 pounds! Well, my first things I've been meaning to do for ages now are to hi-flow the intake (a.k.a pods) and the exhaust with cat and muffler etc. Should go well good then. Once that is done then well...then I might put the boost up a tiny bit if it hasn't crept up already.
  20. GTR400, with the R32's you merely disconnect the fuse (I think) to get pure real wheel drive hey? Hence the highish figure? I cannot do this with the R33 as it will go mental if you pull fuses...it will also not completely shutdown the Altesa making it quite dangerous on a 2WD dyno lol! I wonder how many accidents have happened with that lol! By the way that's a very decent time you got there - are you sure your car is stock? It must be perfectly tuned!!!!
  21. Hi all, thanks for the many replies. It looks like that the stocko 33 GTR's put out around 220 to 240hp at the wheels from what you guys have posted up. R31Nismoid, I'll have to have a look at the forced induction forum tomorrow and see what the dyno thread has to say but yeh, what you guys have posted seams about right (with the loss through the drive train and all). Obviously and you're flooring it on the dyno there will be a point where the Altesa will transfer some torque to the front but this probably differs from gtr to gtr and tyres too I guess....you know, traction issues on the dyno's rollers. The one I'll be using is offcourse an AWD dyno (in this case used for dyno'ing 4x4's) so it'll be interesting to see how much the GTR puts to the front. Sometimes, when I drive enthusiatically, you can see the torque split gauge creep up a little so it'll be good to see this on the dyno. R33BOY, do you by chance have figures from before and after you put the zhorst system on - or did you get it with a proper system. I have been told by my mechanic that the GTR's actually have a decent system on there but gee, I had a look under there and it doesnt exactly look as "high flow" as on my old GTST lol! I define Hi Flow as when you wake up in the morning to find hobo's sleeping in your canon.
  22. LOL....there'll be an Air Crash Investigations episode on the that wing thing haha! That trailer...sh}t that's pretty scary! Some people hey....crazy stuff
  23. Hi all, I've been meaning to post up a thread like this for ages but keep on forgetting. In the near future I will be doing a dyno run with my stock GTR and am interested to hear from you guys what you reckon the figures will be at the wheels. I'm aware of the power loss through the transfer case / altesa systems. Is it really 280hp? What's the real figure for a 1995 GTR? Please let me know if you've had the chance to run your GTR on a dyno so I can compare mine and see if she's healthy or not
  24. Hi all, thanks heaps for all your responses - SAU forums at their best!!!!! Well, thought I'd let ya know how it went. I fixed the water sensor and it didnt do very much but it no doubt sent a better signal to the ECU as it's all clean now. I reset the ECU like was planning to in the other thread and it performs very nice....even gets some wheel spin that it didnt before. I did some research into the ECU's brain and wow - it's very clever. If you stall it or nearly stall it...or if it has one knock somewhere....it will remember it and adjust it to suit and every time it happens your engine will run different at that point where it knocked or stalled. What now? Well, what I done this morning is idle the car till it's cold idle rev's drop from 1200rpm back down to 980-1000rpm hot idle. Car drives like a dream! It took about 4-5mins to warm up so yeh...I basically drove it without it's "choke" engaged and it felt great. Now, obviously the car doesnt mind being driven gently when still in choke mode...but I have to gather up speed when I enter onto the main road so that choke was getting in the way. I wanted how much it chews when it's idling in the morning....about 5 or more liters per hour? Any one know this by any chance? It's obviously very rich that's for sure. PS - after seeing the engine bay above I might have to clean mine haha...is a little bit dusty!
  25. Wow Steve that's one very clean engine bay! I take it that your's is all stock still too?
