What is your preferred second hand parts shop? No preference really, I shop around or buy off the net 33. When you see the sticker "Baby On Board" what do you do or think? I don't share their enthusiasm for their little sprog. So what, you have a baby? 34. Do you like the Nissan models that have been released since Carlos Ghosn took over as CEO? Actually no, I think I could safely say that I dislike them. The V series skylines are really nothing special (no not even the new GTR) 35. Although the R34 Skyline has been replaced by the V35, do you consider it a valid successor? See above. Yawn. Where's the fire, the aggression? 36. A really elegant, simple idea, awesome power to weight, few moving parts, fuller combustion, no empty stroke. Big bang, little box. 40. What quality do you feel your car lacks? Individuality. Then again, I'm looking to make it a sleeper... so perhaps that's a good thing. Wouldn't mind a kit to make it look a little more aggressive though... something subtle. 41. What generation is your Skyline? Series 2, R33 (1996) 42. Is your car RWD or AWD? RWD 43. Why did you choose to buy your car? I have always loved skylines... particularly the series 2 R33. So in a sense.. I already own my (attainable) dream car. 44. When you chose your car, what other models did you also consider? None... that's what I wanted. I did look at the 34 GTT because it was 'newer' but I just love the look of the 33s. 45. When you bought the car, what condition was it in? Normal or needed some work? Almost showroom. Just a couple of minor scratches. Presented and drove as new. 46. How many times do you drive your car in a week? Daily driver, so at least 14. 47. If you had to coin a catchphrase for Skylines, what would it be? Buy a Skyline loser! 48. What car would you say is a rival model to yours as far as features are concerned? R34 GTT. See above, I just love my 33. 49. What is in your opinion, the best features of your Skyline? The body. Particularly the grill and the tail lights. 50. Yeah, I keep dreaming of crashing it or people running into it 52. What do those close to you (family, partner etc) think of your car? They love it also. The missus is actually keen on me modding it. 53. What spec would you class your car as? Drift, Drag, Circuit, or Cruiser? Or "Bog Stock", lol. Would-be Sleeper 54. Which is more important to you about your car? Appearance, Performance/Power or Comfort? Performance/Power, Comfort, Appearance. In that order. 55. What headunit/stereo is in your car? Pioneer. One of those irritating flashing blue LCD screen ones that I got caught up in the moment and bought shortly after buying the car. Sounds good though. 59. What gauges does your car have? All standard. And I intend to keep it that way. Perhaps a very discreet boost gauge when I get a controller. 60. What aftermarket suspension parts does your car have? None 61. What structural reinforcement parts does your car have? None 62. What intake/cooling parts do you have on your car? Apexi Suckmeister 10000 from Sliding Performance. If you were given the choice between your car and your partner, which would you choose over the other? If I could just train the Skyline to cook and have some prosthetics installed... hrmmm. 68. If the Skyline you own did not exist, what would you be driving right now? Probably a BA XR6. 69. A lot of Skyline owners are changing to Evo's, what do you think of them and would you change? Too small. I like the Skyline because it's not ricey and you never see them parked in Northbridge with fluffy bunnies and hello kitty sh*t plastered all over the interior. 70. Which headlight do you prefer, projector or non projector and HID or regular? HID. Although they are really annoying for other drivers. 71. If you were to respray your car, what colour would it be? White... I loved silver when I got it... but the white ones look sexy. Then again, if I bought a white one, I'd probably want a silver one. Grass is always greener... 72. What is the first mod that you would do on a stock version of your car? Pod filter... cheapest 73. Is there a mod in particular that you would like to never see done to a Skyline? Those awful bent up "drift-style" cannons. Cannons in general actually. Everyone has one though. 74. If your car is RWD, is there any time when you wish it was AWD? Or if your car is AWD, is there any time when you wish it was RWD? Not really. I'm happy with my RWD. 75. Have you ever considered your car awkward or uncool? Why? Yeah, sometimes I look at it and think it sits to high and it looks kind of gay on its stock rims. And it looks quite small next to other cars. But I get over it. 76. Do you have any brochures for your car? Where'd you get it from? I don't. 77. Do you have a service manual, log book and owner's manual for your car? I have a service manual and an owners manual. In PDF format though. 78. How do you feel about the price of Skylines on the market now compared to the price you paid for your car? It's actually about the same... so pretty good. 79. If money was not an issue, what tuning mods would you make to your car? RB30+TT. 3.5" Turbo Back. FMIC... well... just about everything that everyone already does 80. Would you upgrade the hub assembly of your car? (eg 4 stud to 5 stud) Nah, no need. Why bother? 81. Would you upgrade the air-con system in your car? (eg manual to climate control) If I could replace it with something a little more user friendly I would 82. Have you made any parts for your car, or any DIY mods? Just the solenoid hack 83. Do you own any spare parts for your car that aren't needed yet? Not yet, but soon. 84. If it was feasible to own a second car identical to yours, would you? No. If I had a second car it would be something newer, better on fuel and different. I'd keep the Skyline for cruising only. 85. How much have you spent on repairs to your car? Nil as yet... but up to $400 soon to respray a scraped bumper. 86. If you see another Skyline which has been modified differently, do you pick faults in it? No, unless they are trying to make it look like something its not (i.e. hub upgrade to look like turbo, GTR badges and other regalia). Also if modifications are done to the detriment of power/stability/etc just to make more noise (read: tightening up your blow off valve to the point where your turbine starts going backwards and venting out the pods). 87. Have you ever watched Initial D, and do you think your car would have beaten Takumi? I have never watched it... 88. Would you buy a scale model of your car, and how much would you be willing to spend up to on it? I have been LOOKING EVERYWHERE for one and I would be willing to shell out upwards of $400-$500 for one... but I can't find it anywhere 89. Would you buy a remote control model of your car, and how much would you be willing to spend up to on it? I already have... and about $800 90. Has your car ever been in a magazine? If so what and which issue? No, but a magazine has been in my car. 91. Have you ever participated in a cruise or attended a meet for Skyline owners? Yeah, the cruise SAUWA had around Christmas 06. Should go on more. 92. Is there any other forum members' car that you idolise or was very impressed by? Mitch's car before it got totalled by a commonwhore. 93. Would you do a face swap/upgrade (ie R34 front on R32, C33 front on A31, etc)? No. But I would consider the running gear from the 34, 94. What would you consider the locally produced equivalent of your car? Toyota Aurion... not very exiting I know. 95. You are offered to pick straws, one straw will get you free mods of your choice and track time to test them, the other will see your car returned to factory standard. Would you pick straws? For sure. Giving up a lousy pod filter versus all that! It'd be worth 90 bucks! 96. You are to attend a track day, however your car gets damaged, and have the following choices: - run the same model as your car, but with a fully tuned RB20E engine. The car has done 150,000kms, and the engine has done 50,000kms. - run the same model as your car, but with a RB20DET auto. The car has done 500,000kms, and the turbo has done 60,000kms. - run your damaged car What would you do? Run my damaged car. 97. If you were to grade yourself as an expert on Skylines, what would you be out of 100? 55. I want to know so much more (particularly the designers and their inspirations), but it's hard to find anything other than info about mods and specs 98. What is the purpose your car serves in your life? Daily driver. Fun and escape. 99. One word that describes Skyline owners in the country and the rest of the world? The 100. Other than "that was long and tiring" do you have any comments? My brain hurts
  2. I guess it's possible, but I think the air con works off a temperature sensor in the dash. If I could be naffed, I would break open the dash and see where the wires go... but I can't
  3. Hey guys, I just noticed this sensor on my dashboard this morning. It looks like a light sensor or something, but I haven't noticed anything on the car that reacts to ambient light. I'm pretty sure it's not a sensor for the windscreen wipers either, because I don't have any of those fancy automated wipers. Were automated wipers even an option on the R33? I didn't think so Anyhoo, if anyone could shed some light I'd appreciate it Cheers
  4. Noticed that all the pics that explain where the little grey plug is have disappeared. I've tried it, worked for me. Mine rough idled for a bit before smoothing out again after a few seconds - think this is the computer adjusting the timing. Here you go:
  5. Haha, I'm with Pal, my brain hurts! Thanks for all that guys it's been really interesting. I'm going to do some reading on volumetric efficiency now For those of you playing at home, here's a brief definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volumetric_efficiency
  6. Tried to match the lighting as best I could and distort the wheels a bit to fit. Hope you like it
  7. An awesome response, thanks for that! My little quip about 33psi = 5L was sort of a joke, but it was really interesting to hear your reasons why this wouldn't be the case. Am I close though in saying that for the same engine, with the same setup on the same car - with the only variable being the aspiration, that my RB25DET is almost like a naturally aspirated 3.3Litre RB?
  8. Hey guys I've been trying to figure out what the equivalent displacement of a turbocharged engine from a naturally aspirated engine of the same type would be. Now I know we're not talking apples for apples here (turbo lag, air/fuel temperature, frictional losses, etc) but some sort of rule of thumb would be good. Here's the way I figure it. If you have container full of gas at a pressure of 1 atmosphere (14.7 psi), that means that you have twice the number of molecules in your container than in the equivalent area in the open air. My car runs a stock RB25DET (2.5 Litre) which gets 7psi (0.47 atmospheres) at full boost. So 2.5L x 1.47atm = 3.67 Litres on full boost (This is in a perfect world where we don't have any pesky laws of thermodynamics) This would seem to follow because the stock RB25DE produces 140kw at the crank, whereas a RB25DET produces 184kw. So (184kw / 140kw) x 2.5L = 3.29 Litres While not the same result, we're in the same ballpark. If we assume the only difference between the RB25DET and the RB25DE is that one has a hairdryer, maybe we can account for the shortfall by calling it losses due to thermodynamics. So maybe we can come up with a thermodynamic loss coefficient by dividing what we think the equivalent displacement should be, versus what it is in the real world: 3.29L / 3.67L = 0.89 Here's what I think it all means: Displacement (in litres) x Boost (in atmospheres) x thermodynamic loss coefficient = equivalent naturally aspirated displacement (when on full boost) eg: 2.5L x 1.47atm x 0.89 = 3.27L So if I wanted the equivalent of a 5 Litre donk and I didn't want to do anything else to the car but adjusting boost and I didn't mind crapping my turbine through my exhaust pipe, I'd need to be running 33psi. What do you guys think?
  9. Do you still need help with this or are you sorted? PM me if you like
  10. Was a tad bored last night. I'd actually like to see something like that - better than a fleet of commonwhores and falcons.
  11. Name: Iain Copyrighted since: 20 June 1981 I drive a: Silver SII R33 GTS25t I work/study as: Web Developer/Project Manager Cruise/event attendance rate: Hardly ever. Hobbies: Jogging, RC Cars (beginner), definitely cruising, dreaming about mods I can't afford Might be of use contacting me for: Making you a kick-ass website, any graphic design, going for a beer, going for a cruise (if you live around in or around Mount Lawley and just wanna tool around in our cars sometime, drop me a PM)
  12. Nice one mate, thanks for that! I've just downloaded it. It's pretty good reading. Looking at the mods section, it's also made me think I'm going to have a crack at some homemade water injection. Not sure about a whole 20L tank in the boot though. I wonder if any benefit would be offset by the extra 20kg you need to carry? Something I'd consider doing as well is hooking up the water pump to the "Power" switch (I have an auto), so that it only pumps when you're doing some spirited driving.
  13. Thanks guys for all the awesome info. Modena - I love the old Skyline ads, they're so cheesy in that Japanese-trying-to-appeal-to-western-culture kind of way. Rezz - That's great, I've never seen an R33 scale model before. Now if only I could find a series 2 Vietorious - lol, halfcut scale model MintR33 - That sounds like exactly what I'm looking for. Have you read it?
  14. Man, that looks the sex. How much did it set you back all up if you don't mind my asking?
  15. I've been looking around a bit recently for some good reading material about the evolution of the Skyline (not just the GTR) and the RB engine. Can anyone help me find some more? Something I'm really interested in - but can't find anything about - is who designed the bodies and what was the story behind their designs (like what were their cues, what inspired them). So far, all I've been able to find is Shiro Nakamura is senior vice president for the Nissan design division. I don't know how long he has been or anything else about him. I'm particularly interested in the R33 Series 2, only because that's what I happen to drive, but anything would be good. I've had a look through these forums and other places and so far I can find some fairly dry information on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Skyline_GT-R http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_RB_engine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Skyline http://history.jbskyline.net/ (Okay, okay, I found this one using Search ) Even some ideas for books or videos on the subject would be good. Any ideas? Also, I'm looking for a scale model of a silver R33 GTS25t. I don't think they exist, but my hope was perked up a bit when I saw a scale model of an R32 GTSt. All I can find anywhere are GT-Rs.
  16. Hmmm... nice idea. Thanks - that might be the go. Although I am starting to have fun with it now
  17. Hey Kermit, I've heard a few people say good things about your work and I'd like you to take a look at my SII 33 at some stage (next two to three months). I'm looking to get a full 3" system from the turbo back (Split Dump, Front Pipe, High Flow, Cat back, muffler). I understand I have to supply the muffler, is there anything else I need to supply? Also, just a ballpark figure will do, how much am I looking at (not including the parts I need to supply obviously). Cheers mate Iain
  18. Hmmm, I don't have a sponge thing as much as a brass-looking mesh thing covering the AFM...
  19. Thanks for all that guys - I appreciate the help - and not berating me too much for being a nanna about the noise :laughing-smiley-014: . After a second drive, the noise is actually starting to grow on me, especially now I know nothings broken. I think I'm going to get a box for it though because I think it's loud enough to attract PC Plod and I'd like to muffle it a bit. And I reckon I'll stick the old box back on when I go on long drives. I can imagine cruising down south for a few hours it would start to grate on me.
  20. D'oh! I guess I'll have to buy a box to muffle it a bit. I mean, this is... really quite loud. I haven't heard any others sound quite like this. (lol, the man buys a pod filter for the induction noise... then complains about the induction noise) Anyone else? Cold air box?
  21. Hey fellas I just got my pod filter from Slide (thanks Aaron) and after installing it I've noticed something I didn't expect. Basically there is a really loud rushing air sound whenever I come on boost. I was looking forward to a bit more induction noise, but this is just embarrasing. I've never put a pod filter on a turbo before, but on an N/A engine you just get a deep throaty growl and I was expecting something similar with perhaps a bit of a gushing sound when the BoV opened. Is this constant rushing sound normal for turbos or is my blow off valve knackered? Cheers guys SII R33 GTS25t (Stock other than Apexi pod)
  22. Hi Mitchy It's so sad to see - that was one awesome ride man. I can't say anything that hasn't already been said, but it's painful to see something like that happen to someones pride and joy. I'm glad you're okay though and I hope your neck heals up fine. Cheers mate Iain
  23. Hey guys I've been looking to see what redline oils would be best for the car on it's next service. The redline site recommends everything I need except that it neglects to mention what kind of ATF I should buy and how many litres I need. I've done the search and 7 Litres is about what I think you need. I've also heard some people around here recomending D4 ATF - is this the best choice considering it's a daily driver that gets a bit of welly on occasion. I don't plan to race it, but in the short term a turbo-back and an fmic are on the cards. Anyway, here's the link to the red line recomendations I was talking about... So I'm thinking about going with the following: Motor: 1 x RL108-4 10W40 Engine Oil 1US Gallon 3.784L each $123.00 1 x RL108-1 10W40 Engine Oil 1US Quart 0.946L each $36.00 Diff: 2 x RL134-1 MT90® Gear Oil 75W90 GL4 1USQrt 0.946L each $36.00 Tranny: 2 x RL128-4 ATF D4 Auto Dex3 1USGal 3.784L each $126.00 Does that sound about right? Also, what is the difference between GL4 ATF and GL5+ ATF? They are the same price so I'm assuming they have different applications rather than one being better than the other.
