  1. I'm lucky to get 350km to a tank running 7psi all the time. I'm gonna try some injector cleaner and might try cleaning the sensors. But I'm in the city the whole time and my foot is quite heavy so I don't think I'm doing too badly though. Tell you what, it's a shock after driving a charade for seven years! I used to get 500km to a 35L tank of fuel doing the same sort of driving. 600km if I was doing country runs.
  2. Hey, thanks for that. I like your car btw. 324 rwkw, how'd you arrive at that? And from the little bit I can see in your sig, your rims look sweet too.
  3. Hey Guys I posted this in forced induction performance a few days ago and then realised for such a Perth-centric question, it was probably a dumb idea. Thanks Mr.Keets for your response though - I will certainly look into it. I recently bought a SII R33 GTS25t and yeah, I'm loving it! But I'm starting to get used to it now and I want more! I was wondering where you guys have gone to get your exhaust systems, what expereriences you've had (good/bad) and how much it set you back? As the subject says I'm after a 3" Turbo Back system, but as I'd like to build a sleeper, I'd like it to look reasonably stock and not be too loud. My aim (eventually) is to surprise the hell out of that feller with the blue and white R33 and LED tail lights in my bog standard looking crate. Cheers guys Iain P.S. Blue and white R33 guy if you're part of the SAU crew; what have you got under there? It sounds... interesting
  4. No worries mate. I'd really try filtering your HU though if you ever feel like doing it again. The reason you won't have noticed it through your speakers is because you have a lot more power running through them than you do have running through the RCAs. That is to say, you're running at a higher signal to noise ratio. There is a lot of power going through the speakers wires along with a little bit of alternator noise so it's not so noticable. The line level going through your RCA's is very low powered, it doesn't need to be very high because it's the amplifiers job to make it louder. The problem is, you've got the same little amount of noise going through those cables along with a little amount of signal. The amplifier takes the noisy signal and just makes it louder. That's why the whine is a lot more noticable when you run your speakers off an amp. I'm not very good at explaining this so I've drawn you a little diagram. Hope this helps Iain P.S. There is no point in power filtering your amp if this is the case - you have to filer out the noise at it's source. The reason filtering the amp wasn't working for you was because the signal was already noisy by the time it got to the amp.
  5. Hi Guys, The topic pretty much says it all. I'm after a 3" Turbo Back system for my R33 and would like to know what experiences Perth people have had with different suppliers. How much it cost you all up would be good to know too. I want to build a sleeper so the system has to be visually discreet and not overly loud, so any advice on how to achieve this would really be appreciated. Mr Keets, you and I spoke about exactly this a couple of weeks ago - who did you say you went to? Iain
  6. When you say yellow plug, what do you mean? The larger yellow power cable? Hmmm, you didn't mention if you power filtered the head unit - have you tried that? If you do mean the yellow power cable, I suppose it's entirely possible that this could be the source of your problem. Is your HU wired directly to the battery or are you taking a feed off something else (e.g. the existing HU power cable on your loom)? It sounds like the only thing you haven't changed in the equation is your HU and power filtering of the head unit. I'd take the power filter off your amp and stick it on the HU to see if that will make any difference. Also, if you've got a spare HU lying around (lol, who hasn't), have you tried swapping that back in to see if it works okay? Also, another thing to try is to buy an inline RCA filter (Dick Smith, Tandy, Altronics, Jaycar sell them). It can muddy out the sound a bit, but its worth it just to see if that's your problem or not. I missed where you live, but if your in Perth, I actually have one I'm not using. 7. Did you try all the usual things like finding another earth for your head-unit/amp, power filter for headunit/amp, inline RCA filter for amp (but that spoils the sound). Does the whine go up and down with the speed of the engine? Perhaps you haven't got a good earth?
  8. Dude, there's some pretty sound advice in there. A mate of mine had a laser TX3, certainly no shitbox, okay for parts, plenty quick and decent to learn the ropes in. My first car was a Charade and I certainly learned a lot in that car and when I learned lessons in it, those lessons were normally fairly cheap to repair. I've plowed into a tree with it and been hit by a truck (The truck was not my fault but the tree was totally my fault lol). The point is if I had been driving a Skyline when I hit that tree, I'd have been going a lot faster and I pretty sure I would not have lived to write this to you now. I was a bit of a hoon when I was younger and I'm sure it was not having all that power at my right foot that prevented me from going off to see the flying spaghetti monster too early. I don't want anything bad to happen to you, but I think you need a few good frights first. You need a couple of low speed accidents or very near misses to scare you straight. Preferably involving your own stupidity and nobody else - a little like what happened to me. However, I know from experience, that getting a Skyline is more of an emotional decision than an intelligent one - so I say buy it. But, take a good long hard look at yourself first. You have an appauling driving record and you've got that arrogant invincible streak about you. If you do get a Skyline, grow up FFS - it's not a boys car. Don't kill yourself or anyone else. Douglas has something pretty apt to say about all this: Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. 9. Hi guys, Until recently I was a victim of the dreaded alternator whine and I thought I'd share my little story so that it might help someone else someday. I've been putting up with this whining for weeks and I'd had just about enough of it. Well, the other day I bought a power filter from Jaycar, spent about an hour hooking it up and... no difference - still whining. The interesting thing is the whine would stay there even if the head unit was switched off with the facia removed. It was getting very frustrating because it spoiled the sound of the engine - which I was beginning to miss! The speakers I have are the kevlar 6.5" coaxials from Jaycar and these speakers have an inline crossover that just looks like a heatshrinked matchbox. Turns out what was happening was this; when I was driving along, the crossover on the passanger side would dangle very close to the battery. With the alternator charging the battery while the engine was running, this was enough to enduce a current in the crossover which translated into a whine from the tweeter. I have since fixed the crossover as far away from the battery as I can get and this has sorted the problem right out. Hope this helps someone Iain
  10. Thanks for the tip on the fuel mate; it's good to know that's about average. Hmmm, as for the solenoid, I guess it's possible it was just disconnected, I'll have to remove my short to ground and see if it comes on the higher boost in the higher rev range. As I said, at the moment, I'm running on high boost the whole time. Which is great fun - but probably not all that economical If I take the short out and the higher boost doesn't come on in the higher rev range, I think I'll just use the solenoid hack and rather than earthing it to the body, I'll earth it to the power/snow switch light. That way when I switch it to power, I'll also get the higher boost. Hmmm. That seems like a good idea - I'll keep you all posted if I do that. Cheers Iain
  11. -- WARNING Skyline n00b Alert! --- I read the "Free Boost Mod" thread after my mate told me I wasn't getting enough boost. In fact I was not hitting stage 2 at all. So I ran the solenoid to ground as the thread suggested and lo and behold - full boost all the time. So the question is this: given that by bypassing the ECU I've verified that the solenoid is fine and there is nothing mechanically wrong, does this mean my ECU could be rooted? Also, and this is possibly related, I am getting atrocious economy (300-350 km to a full tank). But, this is my first Skyline so that could just be the way of things; I'm ALWAYS in the city and don't mind giving it a bit of welly when there's room to move - not always but a few times between fillups. Appreciate your help guys! Iain P.S. If you haven't done the solenoid hack - it's well worth a go. WHEEEEEEE!
  12. Funny you guys should be talking about this today. After only having my S2 33 for a month, I'm about ready to start getting up to a bit of mischeiv. I've always wanted a 33 and after reading what you all had to say I took the plunge - so thank you for that. First of all, apart from some really minor suspension tweaks, the car is stock. I let my mate (a mech) take it for spin today and he said the engine is sweet but it doesn't seem to have enough boost. He has owned an S1 and says he had no trouble breaking traction while on the move (this is without a boost controller apparently). I'm going to buy a gauge on the weekend so I can see more accurately, but looking at the gauge in the dash, with my foot on the floor it's on around 300 mm mg (5.8 psi). That is to say it's just under the halfway mark between the 0 and 7. Does this sound about right to you? Should I be able to peg the meter in the dash? Thanks for the advice on the R34 SMIC btw - I might have to go have a look for one now.
  13. I've just always wanted one. Thought they always looked gorgeous on the road and when my mate took me for a spin in his series 1 33, I just had to have one. I bought an series 2 though, I just think they look sexier with the open grille, tastier front bumber and the squarer spoiler.
