What If I Just Dont Get Anything?
Jonno34 replied to Jonno34's topic in General Automotive Discussion
yeah adam i think thats the main issue, like when i wanted to learn about detailing and i focused only on that i learnt it very well, but with performance/engines/etc theres just so many different aspects im not quite sure where to start/focus etc! ill probably just focus on whatever aspect the skyline needs .. atm its in need of new coilovers so i think ill be focusing on suspensions! -

Hey brenton, cheers for the link mate! Will check it out, hopefully I can pick up something nice on my crappy uni student budget ... Josh, I just joined SAUWA so ill definitely be rocking up to some car meets and have a chat with people, and maybe ill meet someone who wont mind me (trying to) lend a hand to them while they work on their cars so I can pick some stuff up! I'll search around on some sites people recommended me and books for how the internal combustion works, didnt manage to find any at the library .. may have to buy a book, but i picked up a whole bunch of gregorys/haynes car manuals ... will have a read of them and hopefully learn something! Cheers everyone, really appreciate the support, i hope i can be helping others out someday too -

Hey Brent, Yeah I was planning on getting the R31 as the car to work on, theres a few on gumtree for sale, but unfortunately their all automatic and the rest of my mates (I cant afford to buy a whole car by myself so we're working in a group, splitting the costs etc!) prefer other cars ... we're looking at a 93 Corolla atm .. ill try and find something in the 80s though Cheers for the tips, and yeah definitely planning to get some good reading done, heading to the library tomorrow to see what I can pick up! -

LOL at the comments on hot4s ... I agree the cars there are .. interesting to say the least! Im not completely clueless, I can do the bare basics (oil change, oil filter change) but I'm still nearly clueless! Especially about the more high tech stuff such as tunes etc I'll definitely be heading to a SCA or something to grab some of those gregorys/haynes books i was recommended But on second thought maybe I should try the library first .. they seem expensive on my limited budget .. and i should DEFINITELY start rocking up to the SAUWA meetings I think, will get my membership soon! I was also recommended the street machines magazine? What do you guys think of this vs HPI? I've been reading HPI up till now (sadly enough I still dont really know much from reading this mag) Cheers for the advice everyone, love the forum! -

Hey everyone, thanks so much for the responses Shazza: Im planning on getting a cheap lil unrego'd car for me to learn some practical stuff on, I have a few friends who have done full engine swaps etc etc so they should know their stuff and be able to help me get started ... Thanks for the links to wikicars/the knock page! I'll get reading! Brenton: For the Gregorys Service manual, does it have to be the skylines manual specifically or would the manual for other cars teach me the basics too? Cos since im planning to get a lil bunkie the service manual for that may help! Also im not too sure if what I have is any good, but I found a copy of the Nissan Skyline R34 Service manual online as a PDF? Ill link it here for everyone in case its useful .. perhaps i could get an old unrego'd R31! i saw a few on gumtree for <500 bucks http://www.scribd.com/doc/5332929/Nissan-Skyline-R34-Workshop-Manual-English - is this any good? The Haynes performance one looks great! Will pick that up and maybe one or two more haynes has on mechanics etc thanks for the suggestion Michael: I'm currently stuck in uni, but im planning to do a MITA induction course during one of my uni breaks its 4 weeks full time so it should be quite helpful ... and would love to do a course at tafe .. but itll have to wait till after uni unfortunately, they dont run part time courses on mechanics etc ive been enquiring from all the different tafe's in perth Thanks for the help everyone, its good to see how I can get started learning -
Hey everyone I'm pretty new to the whole car scene, and I don't really know anything, but I'm real keen to learn. Everyone has told me the best way to learn was in a forum! So I joined this forum since I love my skyline.. and i've been reading through posts on the N/A section, suspension/handling section, maintenance section etc ... I'm reading a whole ton of posts, but to be honest, i really just dont understand half of what you guys are talking about, and I dont wanna keep asking questions like .. what does that mean .. when everyones having an important looking discussion ... it would probably get annoying. HOW did you guys learn all of this stuff? I mean like the terminology .. like what a "knock" is, what all the different parts of the cars are, what each one does ... basically the whole thing! Its very interesting stuff and id learn to know more about it ... Is there anything I could read to learn about all this? I'd love to be able to contribute something more than "soo what does that mean again?" to all the discussions etc going on, and id love to be able to work on my car myself Sorry for all the questions around the forums so far everyone, hopefully this thread ends it all! and thanks for your patience with my noobie questions Cheers everyone!

Hey Rhys, I'm not planning on doing any work to the skyline by myself anytime soon! Thinking of getting some unrego'd cheap lil car to take apart and learn something with, since i've got some friends who've done alot of work on their own cars etc, thought they could come and help me work on the lil bunkie! its interesting to see all the different opinions on different training/learning environments! thanks for all the feedback so far everyone
-
Hey Ben, how long did the course go for? It sounds like a good start! Im doing a few short courses soon, one on mechanics, one on basic panel work, one on interior retrimming so i hope that will be a good start, and maybe the MITA course will take me a few steps up! Yeah I would love to be able to work on cars as a profession, but we will see where life takes me
-
hey james, cheers for that, they look great, ill get in touch with tafe and m.i.t.a and see what my options are thanks for the help so far everyone really appreciating it
-
Hey vincent, I would love to work on my own car, but tbh i dont know crap! all ive done with my car is just basic oil/oil filter changes and air filter ... taken apart the dash/centre panel to spray the panels/change the lights inside to blue .. and that would be about the extent of my knowledge with cars Yeah, id love to do the apprenticeship but I don't have 3.5 years, im currently in uni for 4.5 already in my double degree! Its a shame cos i have a ton of love for cars but I dont know anything and Im not too sure how to go about learning
-
hey troy, What course at tafe dya reckon is good? I was looking at traineeships .. their very specific? I'd like to have more general knowledge etc i think as I just dont have the time to do all the different traineeships to learn about everything! Hahah, I was thinking of buying some unlicensed car for a few hundred bucks to try and pull apart/fix up etc to have a bit of a learning experience ...
-
Yeah I found the service manual online .. What do you guys think about this? http://www.pitstop.net.au/view/products/page/query/plu/19419/ The owners manual hahaha My car is N/A
-
hey guys sorry to revive this thread again just wondering .. is there a skyline manual or something like that? Most cars have the "gregorys" manual and such .. Just wanting to learn more about my car and how it works/how to maintain it etc and thought something like that would be nice to have! Only thing i found is the owners guide from pitstop

pew pew i gotta say impul sides and rear is pretty much one of the best sets around, its a nice clean and simple look and luke i agree with you, im torn even more between the two after seeing yo-yo's 34, that looks TOUGH
-
yeah both the impul and nismo look really good, the impul does look alot like a stock bumper though, its only a slight difference between the two :S hahaha yeah unfortunately most gt-ts i see without a stock rear bumper have that ... altia thing hahahah the rest of that altia kit would look great with the nismo rear bumper though
-
yo-yo that looks amazing did not realise it could look so good, perhaps the carmate copy isnt quite as good im back to being undecided, but still the majority of people prefer impul ... but then perhaps the nismo one is rarer in that case
-
oh by the way guys, would most likely be putting the "nismo aero kit" (is that what its called) for the front and sides, or maybe even just a full impul kit .. sometime in the future. i reckon the nismo's would all go nicely together, but really imo their all nice simple designs and would all go quite nicely together in lots of diff combinations
-
Thanks for all the help victor I'm doing this through insurance, so they might prefer that the buying, fitting and painting is all done by the one person, but ill have a chat with them and see how things go, ill definitely go check out styled2race, rob, and fibrevision as well again, thanks for all the help and advice
-
I agree hektik, im only replacing the rear bumper cos it got damaged and insurance is gonna get me a new one, and it works out cheaper for them and faster for me to replace it with an aftermarket bumper thanks for your votes guys most people seem to be voting for impul, i thought id be different and put the nismo one on ... but it looks terrible in that red picture, but really nice in the JSAI pic so not too sure but leaning towards impul atm from the huge preferance towards that by the whole world in general
-
Hey everyone, basically i cannot decide out of these 2 rear bumpers the first is: Im quite sure thats the impul style rear bumper The second option is .. called the Nismo S tune style rear bumper by JSAI for some reason it looks terrible in the red picture .. Thanks for your opinions
