Steering / Cournering Issue *serious*
Willis replied to Willis's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Yes the tyres are all the same size, with fairly even wear. Standard wheels as well. Pretty sure we have had a full wheel alignment and wheel balance done already. Alright i'll see if there is a pedders in Wagga -
Hmm .. well i'm sure you will enjoy the new setup mate. What caused the problem initially? $13k is fairly hefty.. but should go like stink ^^

Hi all. 1991 Nissan r32 GTR, doesn't like going around bends. I will give you a quick explanation of my issue. Problem: At speeds above 80kph (100kph it's really prominante) when i turn the steering wheel left the car responds normally starts to turn smoothly, then suddenly the car turns in harder without any further movement of the steering wheel. It's like an over-correction but in the same direction. It is very pronounced, and as you can imagine makes turning left handers rather .. erm, difficult. I have owned the car for 3months or so, and have been slowly getting bits and pieces fixed. My mechanic and i are pretty much stumped. He thinks that it could be bushes in the rear .. Initially i thought it was the HICAS, so i had that removed using a lockout kit, and the hydraulic lines were re-routed. As far as i know the HICAS ECU is still there, just no hydraulic inputs to the rear wheels. Turned out HICAS wasn't the problem. Upon further inspection of the cars suspension, it was then found that the strut mounting plate's in the front (not on the coilovers on the chasis) where installed incorrectly and this had resulted in the left hand plate being cracked. Finally we have found the issue! Guess again .. that wasnt the problem either. Castor arm bushes have recently been replaced with poly-urethane bushes, as they were buggered. The car has an "aftermarket" 2-way diff in the rear, and it's apparently abit sad .. makes alot of noise when cournering slow and changing gears with low revs etc (normal operational noises i think) And that's all i can think of, does anyone have any idea's that i can raise with my mechanic? He thinks that it could be bushes in the rear of the car, he said he has found 6mm of play in a bush? I am sceptical .. and would rather not replace $700 worth of bushes just to find my car still pulling to the left. (it could also be pulling to the right, but it's nowhere near as pronounced if so.. pretty sure it's only pulling to the left side) Could it be the diff? Bushes? Something else? The chasis is straight etc and all the major thing's have been checked. Not sure if it is relevant but the car also twitches abit under initial braking and the wheel wiggles a little bit. It's a pig to try and courner fast! Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you need anymore info, just ask .. and i'll do my best to let you know! Willis.

New Rims - Rays Gram Light 57f
Willis replied to LotusGTR's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Keep us updated LOTUSGTR as i was under the impression that those wheels should have fitted fine! I was just about to purchase wider lower offset wheels .. but might wait now until you've got this all sorted! I've also heard that lipping the gaurds will give you alot more clearance, and is pretty painless to get done. Cheers for the info / experiences. Keep us updated! Willis. -
What tyres are you running panzer? At this stage i'm planning on going for 17x9.5 +18 offset, should sit pretty much flush if not just a touch inside. With this size hopefully i can run some decent tyre width like.. 255 or 265 =] I guess it's all about finding the balance between what looks great, and doesnt give any issues!

you have pm. -
JAGR33 your right, it's no track car. It's a street car for now. Cheers again for all the info.. i think i'll go ahead with the 17x10+18 and just get the lips rolled flat if required. My car isnt very low so hopefully it wont require any immediate attention!
-
What is involved in getting the guard rolled 100% flat? Does this just mean folding that lip inside the guard flat? And how much would something like this cost? Is there much difference between 17x10+18 and 17.9.5+18 with regards to clearance? These are the only 2 variations of size for the wheels that i'm after.

Looks the goods iceydude, cheers for your input.

DTSNR32 - thanks for that information and pictures. rather informative .. what sort of driving do you do with your 32? done any track work with those wheels or really aggressive cournering? still no clearance issue's, what about on full lock? I'm thinking of running 17x10+18 with 265 / 275 all round, but my old man thinks that it's too wide and i will have clearance issue's under hard cournering / bumps etc. Cheers!

Price or no balls. -
Cheers for the response's guys, i have decided to let these wheels slide as they arnt the right offset as you all have said! I want to keep the handeling aspets of my car, i love doing mountain runs / hillclimb / downhill runs etc .. it's why i bought the car actually. I'm now thinking something more along the lines of 17x10 +18 so i can run a larger profile and hopefully fit a decent amount of tyre under there.. How does this sound? I've seen lots of pics of the 18x10+18 and it does sit flush, not sure how it will go with a decent tyre width under there though? Anyone had any experience, will gaurd work still be required for this size? I'm thinking of getting some enkei pf01's or something like that, my mate suggested 17" but still 10" wide so you can fit more tyre on the rim. He suggests running like 265/275 ?

Wheel Sizes & Offsets For Skylines
Willis replied to Sydneykid's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Input on running 18x10.5 +15 on a r32 GTR .. thinking of running streched tyres and maybe a little bit of gaurd work. Plausable? Anyone done it.. can't seem to find any pics of 32's running these specs.. -
Will it stick out 12.5mm (half of half an inch) + 3mm (offset difference) further then the 18x10 + 18 inch wheels? Is that how it works?
-
mm yes im aware that 18x10 +18 is about the largest that can be run on standard gaurds. Would it look stupid? I don't want it to look mexican or anything..
-
As the title states, have found a set of wheels that i like. However i think these are slightly too wide for the gtr? Also i have scoured the internet, and cant find any 32gtr's running this width / offset. Will it fit? Or am i dreaming? I don't want to run alot of camber or anything like that, and im not too keen on the idea of getting the gaurds modified.. it's an option but i've heard horror stories. Any advice / info / pics would be epic! Cheers. Like i said i have already searched for this, pleanty of info on the smaller width's..
-
Also keen on this, has anyone got pics within easy access of 18x10.5 +12-18 ish? I have no idea how gaurd work .. works Just take it to a body shop? Is it expensive? $$?
-
Airbags and ABS is over-rated IMO, and reduces the selection of budget cars significantly. I'm not saying they don't work by the way, it's just how often do you crash? And when you do, how often would an airbag have helped .. now-days seatbelts prevent your head destroying the wheel providing you don't drive with your seat too far foward? Just my 2c, lower your standards and you'll find something epic. +1 corolla..

He said that he want's it to be his daily drive.. so i presume he wants to be able to have it registered. Unless he's an epic badass and enjoy's doing non-rego'd driving I'd suggest the evo perhaps, i recently bought a 17k gtr and so far have spent 3k just trying to get it to go around courners properly.. damn HICAS + old suspension bits..
