Hi guys,

I was putting on my Whiteline Spring onto my R34 last night. When I went to tighten the top of the standard shock absorber back on, I found that the thread on the shock was not long enough for me to tighten it enogh so that to hold the spring captive. Do I need to get a longer ruber bush on the top, or do I rely one the weight of the car to hold it captive??

Cheers.

I have fitted several set of 73176 rear coils to R34GTT's and they have always been captive. It is illegal, and also not a good idea, to have them loose at full droop. They don't have any preload, they are JUST captive, enough so they can't fall out of the top spring seats when the shock is fully extended

Did you refit the rubber donut on the top spring seat?

Did you refit the rubber sound insulator over the bottom coil?

Make sure you fitted the rubber top insulators the right way around, the large one goes on the bottom and the small one goes on the top.

Make sure the bump stop washer is not upside down, they have a taper that faces downwards

Check that the shock shaft nut isn't bottoming out prematurely.

I am sure you will find some small fitment issue is the problem.

:P cheers :iluvff:

Thanks for the response Sydney Kid.

It's just the fronts 73175 that are doing this. The rears fit nicely. I rang one of the recomended fitting shops on your Group Buy thread and they said that this is ok and once I lower the car back down it would be fine. He said the weight of the car will hold the spring captive.

I expressed my concern that I didn't want the spring to move around if I went over a big bump. He said I would need to drive it off a ramp for that to happen. Is this write?

I check over my work tonight, but I'm sure I did it write.

Thanks mate, your help is appreciated.

    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
    • Thank you so much for the help
    • Yes it is ATF. I quote @Duncan "it takes a good synthentic auto trans fluid like Castrol Transmax Z" It's not a diff. It's a transfer case. Totally different thing. Yes, fluid will come out the sender hole. No you do not really need to drain it. Just pull the old, quickly poke the new, clean up and top up. But realistically, you should probably take the opportunity to change it anyway.
    • Hey all. I’m looking on replacing my speed sensor on my R33 GTR. Will the center differential need to be drained, and if so, the center diff uses ATF fluid D? I found information on the transmission, front diff and rear diff. Can’t find a for sure answer for the center diff. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
