Hey guys,

My 32 2door has a basic pioneer mp3 headunit, 6inch spkrs in front doors (sum cheap brand came with car), pioneer 3 way 6inch in rear parcel shelf which are amped along with a 12" pioneer sub. The amp is a jvc 4 channel (bridged for the sub). i got a standard cable pack from jb hifi, connected everything and there is a buzzing noise wen the car is running and it fluctuates with the revs.

The ground is in the boot on the left, i have tried a bolt on parcel shelf and a bolt near boot clamp. The cable is 10 gauge and 8 gauge made no difference. A mate suggected takin out rear seat and i should find a bolt on the chassis under there, but i cant get the rear seat out???

Any ideas/suggestions much appreciated, cause otherwise im gunna have to take it to jb hifi / autobarn or somewhere get them to fix, which i got a quote of minimum $120 which seems a rip for a simple problem.

Thanks

P.S - The rca's and power run down seperate sides, the rca's have a splitter at the amp end (necessary cause of single output from head unit.) i sanded down ground points, also some times when I go from radio to cd or if i turn down to "0" volume it makes a loud POP.

P.P.S - When I bought car, front windscreen was replaced, new one didnt have aerial, can i get some kind of aftermarket booster etc, and how much would they be, cause reception is pretty poor.

go to jaycar or dse and get a 20amp line filter, solder it inline with your deck as the diagram with it shows.

all it is is a wire wound bobbin, to filter out the ignition pulses in the system, nothing to do with the earth wire size

There are a lot of things that could cause this type of engine noise, it may be grounding or it may be a combination of things.

Generally when engine noise is present and changes withs the revs it is a "radiated" noise being picked up by one or more of the amp wires. It could be that your rca's are picking up a noise from a cable, putting that noise to the amp, the amp transforms it to sound and you hear it through the speakers.

We used to use a list that looked something like this when trying to eliminate engine noise. Just remember is it a case of trial and error.

- make sure all earth points are clean and direct to chassis

- earth cable is at least as thick as power cable being used for application

- earth from engine to chassis is in good condition

- earth from engine to battery is in good condition

- earth from battery to chasis is in good condition

- rca cables are not run along with power cable for amp

- remote is seperate wire and not wire sometimes moulded with rca's

- rca's do not interfere with or cross other looms within vehicle ( run external rca's to check)

- check power difference from battery to amp in volts

- test in line power filter on amp battery cable

- test in line filter on rca cables ( both behind unit and at amp)

- check that speaker terminals are not touching or shorted to chasis

- if noise only when lights/ air con on etc check earthing for that accessory

These are the most common things that I would suggest.

They may work, they may not, it really is trial and error.

From there you may have to look at Voltage/ charging stabiliers etc to help.

Generally though as i am sure others will point out Engine noise is sue to a fault in the vehicle itself, The above measures are more of a "band aid" than a fix and to have the problem solved once and for all you would have to take your car to a skilled, and i mean this, SKILLED auto electrician to find the actual fault in the car.

JB, Autobarn, Strathfield etc will most likely try the same things as listed in this post and they do not guarantee to fix engine noise or cover engine noise under warranty.

I hope you find this helpful

which side of the car do the rca run down.

i ground my amps in that spot sometime and have had no problems. there is a good grounding point under the rear seat.

i also have an ariel you can get to replace the window ones as the have a booster standard i dont think this will fix it. it sort of looks like an apexi turbo timer. ill post up some pics if your intrested

If you unplug the rca does the noise disapeer?

If thats the case a line isolator will fix it. Its just a small audio transformer you put between you head unit and amp to break the ground between them. I know jaycar sell them, most car audio places should aswell.

Well i have basically narrowed it down to the ground, cause atm it just on wat is essentially tin, in the boot, and i want to change it to under the rear seat, but i could not get it out?? wat am i doing wrong :ermm:

and i would be very interested in seeing the ariel you are talkin about, and where i would get one??

very much appreciated!!

    • That is way more science than even I would use. I just eyeball it, not even accounting for the non-verticality of the tape measure when held on the lip and the centre at the same time. +/- 2mm is good enough for the girls I go out with.
    • So, before putting them in I need to understand the stock ride height. This is how I measured it: First, check the diameter of the wheel's centre cap, it was 52mm. Then put a piece of masking tape approximately across the centre and measure 27mm (half) from at least 3 sides to get a reasonable idea of the centre of the wheel cap. Mark that with a horizontal line as one measuring point. Then, directly above the wheel on the guard, put another piece of masking tape in approximately the centre. Use a string line to find out the point on the guard above the centre of the wheel cap and mark that. Then it is simple, just a tape measure to check the distance from centre of the wheel to the centre of the guard. Final results where  LF: 381mm RF: 379mm LR: 401mm RR: 400mm Pretty even considering they are 120,000klm old factory springs, lets call that 380 front and 400 rear.
    • So....knowing that I have a problem with power steering temps on track and another Wakefield day booked in next Friday, I've done the obvious thing They are very reasonably priced at $1650, considering they are a big monotube shock, double height adjustable (don't have to change pre-load to change ride height), one way adjustable damping and standard sized and customisable springs if you want something other than what comes with them. They come with 9kg/mm front and 4.5kg/mm front and I went with that as a starting point because I'll add adjustable sway bars too https://justjap.com/products/bc-racing-coilover-kit-ds-ds-infiniti-q50-v37-14-current#description Unfortunately they didn't come with rear strut tops so I've re-used the factory ones which was a bit of a pain. Also, the adjuster for the rear shock will be an absolute nightmare to get at, and while there are extensions in the kit I can't see any way you can actually attach or use them
    • I also had 2 bulbs blow at once, years ago in the stagea. made for a fun drive home. The issue was the voltage regulator had failed in the alternator and it was giving 15+ volts. Really, I was lucky all that was fried were the headlight bulbs. So, I'd suggest you check the voltage across your battery terminals with the car running and warmed up. Yes, you will need a multimeter to do so, sorry.
    • Good work to think to check that, and thanks for coming back to post up the outcome.
